“Build Your Own Burger”
Reviewed November 28, 2011

The Counter concept is one that appeals to me since I can get a burger on a salad, or on a bun; choices are varied, you load up your burger (beef, chicken, turkey, veggie or "market selection") with cheese, toppings, premium toppings (think bacon) and sauces. Choice of white or whole wheat bun, and then the fries: shoestring potatoes, crispy onion strings, and some of the best sweet potato fries you'll eat anywhere and the choice of 1/2 and 1/2 is intriguing as well. This is a casual restaurant with young, hip wait staff, who refill your drinks, and check on you but aren't annoying....located in a mall with high end stores, you will see families, as well as ladies who lunch.

“Something a little different and great”
Reviewed October 27, 2011

The Counter hamburger restaurant is a growing chain that is well worth checking out.
They have a very straight forward approach to burgers.
Excellent quality natural ingredients are just the foundation for your personal best burger.
They use a "Build Your Own" format of choosing your meat, toppings, bread and sauce (on the side).
This is so much easier than reading a, usually too long list of "specialty" burgers with pre-selected toppings.
You just choose to add (or not) what ever toppings you want, and the list is vast.
Also they have sweet potato fries and some awesome garlic-ptarmigan fries.
If you need to try both (and you do) they will even split one order half & half.
The ONLY down side was that their shakes seemed to be of the soft-serve variety, rather than ice cream hand made.
The interior is rather modern industrial, but very pleasant.
I must add that our server, Summer, was a huge part of a very pleasant experience.
It is unfortunately all too rare to find a wait-er/ress who actually knows her products, makes very considered recommendations AND is genuinely cheerful and willingly helpful.
There was no sign of any surly tattooed waiter as read in another review.
All of the employees were clean, young and observed to be workers, not slackers.
One **WINK-WINK** caution: their meat weights are post-cooking weights, it is easy to over order.

“really terrible, noisy, rare beef ,soggy greasy fries!!!!!”
Reviewed September 24, 2011

we thought it would be nice, but it truly brings down the forum. noisy loud music inside
and outside. the smell of grease now permeates the forum. the burgers were almost
raw, great for the pancreas and liver and heart. the fries were awful. soggy, greasy and
undercooked. it is attractive, and the waitress was nice, but everything else was very
low grade. we were shocked, and will never go back to the counter. now they have
opened a new one in del mar. that nice center in del mar will now have the smell of
grease coming out of the counter roof exhausts. how disgusting, and in very nice
shopping centers in north county. yuck!!!!!

“Service has declined”
Reviewed July 16, 2011

We used to go to the Counter once a week. Service used to be really good, food and drinks used to be really good. I'm not quite sure what has changed. My husband always orders the same thing, once a week. We have probably eaten at the Counter at least 50 times, each time, he gets the same exact order.

The last time we went, he ordered his usual coffee shake (with alcohol), and they brought him a vanilla shake, no alcohol. So he told the server - I ordered coffee flavor, and this is vanilla - also, no alcohol is in this. (He was worried they might made a mix up and served his alcoholic beverage to some kid instead.) The server brings back a new shake - and it doesn't taste right, and still no alcohol. (Basically, it tasted like the bartender just put the vanilla shake back in the blender and added some coffee to it).

For someone who has had the same drink over 50 times, my husband knew something was wrong with it. We NEVER complain, but it was bad enough that he told the server - I don't think this shake is right, it also still has no alcohol in it. The server goes back to the bar.... then the manager comes over (a youngish guy we have never seen before).

The manager then, in a very rude/snotty voice says, "I can keep making this drink over and over all night long, and it will still taste the same. Do you want me to bring you a different drink?!?!?!" All my husband wanted was the drink made properly. The first time he got the wrong flavor. The second time, the same drink just with flavor added to it - no alcohol at all. Nobody "made the drink over and over" like he was insinuating.

We will NEVER be back... and we were regulars at this restaurant - and never once complained (ever). The food has declined as well, the service has declined, and there is no point paying a premium price for a burger if it isn't going to taste good and the service is bad. Seriously - you can expect a check for 2 people to run at least $50 if you get fries and a drink. The new manager or whoever he is needs to drop the attitude. It was really unprofessional.
