“Perfect hotel experience if you substract the kids.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

I stayed at this hotel for a few days over the July 4th holiday. I've stayed at quite a few nice hotels and this one was definitely top-notch service and ambiance. The rooms are very nicely decorated, have a fridge, and we had a cute balcony to sit on with actual wood chairs. Beds and linens were comfy and they give you slippers and bathrobes. They put us on the 2nd floor which actually didn't give us any view so I'd suggest getting 3 or above.

There are several different restaurants and two breakfast locations on-site. We only ate at the lounge - once for late lounge snacks and once for the prix fixe holiday meal. They actually were awesome enough to ask the chef for other options since I am vegetarian for the holiday meal and it wasn't just slop they threw together it was real entrees! The lounge menu was also very good. We tried several of the small plates and a few of the bigger ones and everything was definitely Hyatt-worthy. The breakfast is very good - the favorite for me was their house-made vanilla bean yogurt. Bread items at all the restaurants were very good too - someone actually cares in the kitchen.

They thankfully have two types of pool experiences. There is a family pool with two hot tubs. Then there is the tranquility pool for 21 and over and a 16 and over hot tub. Unless you're there with kids you'll definitely want to go to the adult area as the other is noisy and kiddie-filled. At the tranquility pool the staff was super helpful. They put down our towels for us, brought us water, cleaned our sunglasses, came around to get drink or food orders. Best of all, the cabanas are first-come and don't cost extra.

We were happy with the fitness center. There are a few cross-ramps, ellipticals, bikes and treadmills. They also have some weight machines (mostly leg ones but also chest, biceps, shoulders) and a pulley-machine. There are also mats, Swiss ball, Bosu ball, and two benches. Best of all they have lots of free-weights up to pretty heavy amounts. Downside - there was a man there with two kids treating it like a jungle-gym.

I don't know if the July 4th holiday drew tons of families but I was astounded by how many kids were there. Strangely almost all the kids were under 7 years old and each couple seemed to have three so you can imagine how overwhelming it kinda was. When we were in the lounge at 10pm listening to a jazz band playing (very good!) there were issues with young children wailing. Nothing the hotel people can do about that but I wouldn't come for honeymoon or anniversary if it's like that regularly.

There was an issue with the fire alarm going off four times over two hours during the night. They were more than generous with their compensation to us for the annoyance.

July 4th night they had a full-length fireworks. Crazy! They even made sure almost no locals were there to preserve room. Easy to get standing room by the pool to watch it.

Room Tip: Ask for 3rd or above if you're facing off-property. We have a view of the hedge on 2nd. If you d...

Spent two nights here at the end of a business trip in San Diego. What a nice surprise! We expected top notch facilities, service, ambience, food, etc. and they delivered. But, even though it is very family friendly (it was July 4 week there were lots of kids everywhere) there is a wonderful "tranquility" pool for adults which is large and overlooks the grounds all the way to the ocean. Gorgeous. Also, we found that the shuttle to the Argyle Restaurant on the golf course is the perfect solution to an adult breakfast. We sat outside with stunning views. However, most impressive was the Saturday evening jazz concert on the property. We bought the jazz package and were awed by the experience: reserved table for two close to stage, wait service, choice of dinners from each of the resorts restaurants, BMW provided complimentary champagne upon arrival and a chance to sit in their WAY FUN cars, but finally, the show was fabulous. Mindi Abair plays the sax like Richard Elliott's female side - she even got us up to dance in the grass! We had a BLAST. No bugs, perfect air temp, incredible entertainment, great food and drink - what's not to like? We got caught by surprise - we need to go back to play golf. LOVED this resort.

Room Tip: Since we were a couple, we asked for and received privacy. We chose not to overlook the main pool wi...

My family and I stayed here for 10 days and used it as a base for various Southern California trips. Even though it is a luxury resort, it is a great place for families. The staff treats you very well and seem comfortable around kids and dealing with families with kids. There are two pools -- one for adults and one for families which is a very nice touch. The park suite was perfect, large, and had everything a small family could need. Love the Illy coffee maker.

The valets are professional and will help you with just about anything you need. Everyone calls you by your name. The pool staff was inconsistent at times, but generally also very accommodating. The swim-in movie night is a nice touch. Our kids loved it.

We originally had a hiccup with check-in because our room was promised but not ready. We ended up waiting in the hotel and the lobby for quite awhile. Mostly, I think this was due to poor communication by the desk clerk who was wearing a "trainee" badge. I think she made promises that were just not reasonable as to when the room would be ready. Nevertheless, once the room was ready, the manager stepped in and offered to waive our parking fee as a means of compensating us for our trouble. Very generous.

A couple of tips. Vivace (which is excellent) has a dress code and when you make reservations the concierge should tell you about that. I had to run back up to the room to put on long pants. The Beach Butler is a great benefit and covered by the resort fee. If you go to the beach or are planning on it, get on the reservation list for the Beach Butler early the spots fill up fast and there aren't that many of them. If you don't get on the Beach Butler list, the valets will still give you towels and chairs for the beach if you want to drive yourself. Take advantage of the shuttle to the tennis center. It's beautiful and for those who play tennis, Steve is a great teaching pro.

In short, I felt really lucky to have found the Park Hyatt Aviara and would recommend it to anyone staying in the San Diego area.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better I think. The lobby is on the 3rd floor.

Didn't even know it was on the Conde Nast Top 20 Resorts of S. California. Splendid! Gorgeous gardens, space, layout, ... My family walked around, totally stunned with awe for the first day. Could not believe it really was this good. Could not have been happier. Definitely worth all the high praise.

Enjoy!

This Hyatt property is located on a hill with nice views. We did not use the spa, swimming pools, golf course or other amenities like the putting green, game room, etc. We just relaxed.
We personally do not like valet service, especially for the reason that if one forgets something and leaves it in the car one has to decide whether or not to do without it, not to mention tipping again after paying for parking. However, this service was very quick.
The food was very good and well seasoned. The property is beautiful. For those that can afford it or for a splurge, this is beautiful resort.
