“Great special occasion meal!”

Took the parentals out to Shadowbrook over the weekend to celebrate their 40th anniversary. We have a wonderful experience and the whole family enjoyed a very special night.

With a group of ten, we could have really taken up some space, but rather than being mixed into the main dining room, Shadowbrook put us in the private room just off the main floor behind the great fish tank. It was perfect for our group. We have an excellent server and the wait staff was very attentive.

Sometimes you can get nervous about service and attention being neglected off the main dining rooms, but this was not the case. We felt very taken care of and yet had the space to make a few toasts and really get to chat each other up.

The food was wonderful overall. I had the filet and sampled the duck which was delicious also. In the past, I have had some just okay steaks here, but this time everything was excellent.

If you are thinking of a special occasion with a good sized group, put this place on your list! I imagine the private room books up early, so plan ahead like we did. It is a very enjoyable experience!

“Shadowbrook is a great place!”

We had a late lunch out on the terrace today. It was LOVELY! The place is charming inside and out, the food was creative and delicious (but not creatively weird),and our waiter hustled the whole time we were there but was attentive and personable. I would go back tomorrow! Like everyone says...walk down and take the cable car up.

“Romantic Ambience for a special celebration”

I made dinner reservations for our anniversary on a Tuesday night. I heard and read about the Shadowbrook and read descriptions of the restaurant and surrounding landscape on the premises. The restaurant has a long history (read the brochure when you go there) and known for the funicular that takes to to and from the restaurant from the parking lot situated above. Walk down the stairs an enjoy the scenery and luscious landscape and take the funicular when leaving. We were greeted by the hostess and given a vibrating buzzer to let you know when your table is ready. We took this opportunity to walk down to visit the creek below and enjoy the scenery; it was a beautiful fall evening.

The dining room is multi-level and terraced into the hillside. If you want an energetic dining experience, ask for the bar level dining level. The dining levels further down offers a more quiet dining setting (provided those sitting around you follow this rule). The dining rooms are divided so you don't feel you're in one huge dining room.

I politely mentioned to our hostess it was our anniversay and if they could possibly accommodate us with a nice, quiet table. We had a wonderful table by the window, overlooking the creek and homes across the way. Our server was wonderful and very accommodating.

Since it was heirloom tomato season, we had the heirloom tomato plate with burrata cheese, figs, strawberries, and cherry tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The tomatoes were the best tasting we had all season, though a bit pricey. My wife ordered the filet mignon and black truffle gnocchi on the special menu of the day and it was served and cooked perfectly. I ordered the slow roasted bone-in pork prime rib; it was served with fingerling potatoes, roasted fennel with apples. This was nice complement for the dish. We ordered a half bottle of Roam Vineyards Pinot Noir-2011 (Santa Lucia Highlands appelation) for $45.

The dessert menu was tantalizing, but we passed because we shouldn't have had that monster sized oatmeal cookie in the late afternoon. The staff did surprise us with complimentary chocolate truffles in celebration of our anniversary (hmmmmm).

Upon departing, we thanked the hostess for accommodating our request for a nice table. We are firm believers how you treat others are returned to you in multiple. The Shadowbrook reciprocated in multiple to us. We will return.

Final note: many diners were casually dressed; we chose to not follow the crowd.

“Great ambience and wait staff”

After much consideration, we chose this restaurant for our last night in Capitola. We made a last minute reservation on a Sunday night, and had no problem getting in. We were a little concerned that it was going to be too fancy and overpriced for what we had intended. Some of the TA reviews led us to think it was for special occasions, etc., which led us to believe it was really expensive. No more so than most of the other restaurants we dined in while on the Monterrey peninsula. The setting is beautiful, our waitress was excellent, and the food delicious. Even though we arrived later in the evening and it was not crowded, we never felt we had to rush. We especially enjoyed the summer flight of martinis and the cable car ride. Truly a beautiful, unique, historic restaurant, in a wonderful garden setting.

“Never Again”

Oh Dear, oh dear, oh dear.
Never will we set foot here again.
I'm currently writing this just after finishing our meal on a busy Saturday night here in Capitola.
We went to the best, or so we thought. Had we entered into a parallel universe?
Everyone had rated this eatery as "top notch" or "magical"
It was the pits. Let me explain.
We ate in the bar area. The signs were on the wall from the start. The busy hostesses were too busy to even explain anything or properly greet us. Then came the waitress who got everything wrong. Our order was two clam chowders and two pork Loin panini. Obviously a very complex order. We were told that we could get free chips as a side order, so we ordered two portions of chips, only to be told by the waitress who had just offered the chips that the chips had finished 15 minutes earlier. Reminiscent of a Monty Python sketch we were then told we could have French fries instead of chips at no additional cost???
We ordered our drinks. The scotch and coke was superb and do was Negroni only that these took 20 yes 20 minutes to arrive. My wife was dehydrating by this time. When they arrived the waitress apologised saying that the bar tender had got the measures of my Negroni wrong and had to make another one.
As soon as the drinks arrived we ordered more just in case the bar tender decided to go on vacation for five weeks.
So the food arrived. Remember the order? 2 clam chowders and two pork Loin panini? Well I only one panini arrived and it was rubbish.
It was so bad that I had to tell the waitress when she asked. She then informed me that the second panini was en-route presumably from the Burundi to which I told her not to bother.
And now for more Monty
Python: the bill or check as you prefer. The two chowders were charged at $4.95 and $6.95 as one came without the accompanying panini and thus charged at more.
I refused to pay the extra $2.00 and also asked for the $12.95 for the abysmal indelible piece of trash disguised as a panino to be removed from our check. After 20 minutes of in depth discussions with her manager this was done.
Utter rubbish. Bad service, bad food, bad hostesses, bad everything. Tagamet indigestion pills have come to the rescue as we both lie here with wind and indigestion on our lovely soft bed.
Well I suppose it must be a romantic restaurant after all!
