I had high expectations from the website and the ratings. I had this idea that I was going to have a balcony and fresh air - not so. My room had windows that faces the street, did not open, and the room was DARK. There are some nice rooms that face the courtyard and have a balcony but I got a dark room with a bad view and no fresh air. It was a disappointment. As a Platinum Marriott member I did ask about a better room and how I could get one with a little fresh air and I was given two different answers "you have to request a balcony in the notes of your reservation" and "you have to reserve a fireplace/spa room." Neither ended up being accurate. The room was the primary disappointment but the secondary was the check-in staff. The woman was rude and told me nothing about parking or breakfast or anything when I checked in. She gave me a key and pointed while looking away. I travel the US and have higher expectations of Marriott properties, even a Fairfield Inn and Suites.

Room Tip: Request or reserve a room that faces the courtyard and has a balcony. Otherwise, you will be misera...

Our traveling family of 2 grandparents, 2 young grandkids and three adults decided to do a short vacation in this area. We wanted to go to the Monterey Aquarium, Gilroy Gardens and Santa Cruz Board Walk and this hotel is pretty central to all 3 spots. We were able to get adjoining "suites" with 2 queen beds in each room. The suites have a slight separation between bedroom and front sitting area but are not two separate rooms. The bathroom is in the front. There is a microwave and small fridge in the room. Two TVs are a nice feature. The rooms are fairly large and the adjoining feature was great for the grandkids.

There was a breakfast included and it was not just a grab and go which we thought it was going to be, but had scrambled eggs and sausages along with waffles and other items. No potatoes so a step down from what a Resident Inn offers but quite good to get you going. The fruit salad was quite good and the small muffins were surprisingly tasty. Other amenities included the swimming pool which in Capitola is pretty cold as the average temperature even in the summer is quite cool. Grandkids still enjoyed the pool. The exercise room is one small room with limited equipment. The design of the hotel is quite interesting with gated parking under the hotel. There are two elevators which can be confusing as one makes 4 stops for 3 floors with an extra stop at the entrance level which allows for handicap access to the lobby. This elevator stops on the 2nd floor although there are 3 floors. To get to the 3rd floor, you need to use the second elevator which is around the corner. That's because the lobby and breakfast area (2nd floor) is in a different building from the 3 floor of bedrooms. We had also asked for rooms close to the elevator which was a help with the grandkids.

The floor types (probably plywood) tended to amplify the footsteps of the people above you. So if you are a light sleeper, might try to get a room on the 3rd floor. The rooms were well taken care of with plenty of towels and the daily clean up was well done. We had no problems with the front desk and they were professional in their handling. If you walk a block or two you'll run into some restaurants and take out places such as Erik's Deli. Whole Foods is down the road so you can go there for a healthy take out meal if you want. It's a little ways in from the freeway but didn't notice much traffic. Capitola Mall with Macy's and other stores is also up the road toward the freeway.

The adults had not been to the Monterey Aquarium for some years and were pleasantly surprised to find the exhibits much more interesting than what was remembered from previous visits. It also was interesting for the grandkids (ages 2 and 5) who enjoyed all the hands on items available for them to explore with. You can see lots of otters in the ocean, along with seals and sea lions from the aquarium balconies. We also went to Gilroy Gardens (both the aquarium and GG were under 1 hour driving) which was a lot of fun for the kids as the age level is probably ideal for them. Kids over 8 probably will not be too interested in this park. There were plenty of rides even for the 2 year old. Only thing is watch out for the heat as we hit high 80's on one day but the second was quite pleasant. It was close to 100 on the first two days we were in the area and decided to wait and not go to the Gardens then which was a wise decision. Santa Cruz boardwalk is a short drive from the hotel but beware of traffic jams on the freeway so would suggest take city streets to the boardwalk area. Again lots to do and as you can just pay as go for rides, you don't have to wate money for grandparents who may not ride at all as no admission fee unlike Gilroy Garden or other such amusement parks. Note that with a Gold Great America season pass, admission to Gilroy Garden is included.

All and in all, this hotel was very nice and we enjoyed our stay here

Room Tip: Ask for room close to elevator and 3rd floor if you're a light sleeper.

We stayed here on our way back to the San Jose Airport. Very nice, new hotel in a convenient area. The rooms were big and very clean. Was very close to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk which we enjoyed even though we left the kids at home. The guy at the desk told us we should make the short drive down to Capitola beach and shopping area which was also very nice. We also went down to the mall right down the road which was very nice.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 3rd floor very quiet, clean and big.

I am not surprised this hotel is rated so highly. It was the first Fairfield inn we have stayed in despite staying in lots of Marriott hotels. It is in an upmarket neighbourhood close to shops restaurants and the beach. Very small pool in a private location. The whole hotel is in as new condition. Good wifi and free breakfast. Free parking under the hotel. No problem with early checkin. Superb glass ornamental jellyfish in 3 storey foyer. This hotel could be marketed as a boutique hotel just s needs a restaurant.

The is a very nice new hotel a few blocks from the beach. The suites are spacious with nice design and decor. Perfect for traveling with teenagers. We had a room with a huge jacuzzi tub which was great. However, the shutter opening between the/ bathroom and living room area doesn't offer much privacy. The beds are very comfortable. The pull out sofa bed is your typical sofa bed mattress, ok for one or two nights. The hotel is small but modern and nicely decorated. The kids enjoyed the pool area very much. Breakfast was an assortment of items and had something for everyone and well stocked and the breakfast room was large enough to accommodate all the guest. We booked the last room available for Memorial weekend at the last minute. As a result, we paid a very high rate of $319! I think this is too much for this hotel for one night! I am hoping their regular rates are more affordable. We would definitely go back if we get a better rate. Lesson learned, I will now book holiday weekends far in advance in the Santa Cruz/Capitola area. A rental vacation home may be a better choice for this area when traveling with teenagers.
