This as a simply wonderful experience. We were delighted to find that our room had a private balcony overlooking the house pond... with fish!
Koshinzuka is a truly remarkable person. A farmer, a gardener and a host, his love of sharing local Japanese culture and stories about his family is simply wonderful.
The food (a generous dinner and breakfast) was cooked by his wife . We ate a lot of good food in Japan but this was exquisite.
Apart from a novel way of eating noodles (Koshinzuka has created a moment of hilarious 'Japanese TV ultimate challenge' type fun) he even lit the fire for a while, and sang beautifully..... I didn't feel like a tourist in his home. I felt like a guest.

The owner and his family are absolutely fantastic. We loved both meals, and the rooms was comfortable. We were worried that the room would be too hot, since a heat wave has been sweeping the country, but even though Tokyo and Osaka have been around 34 degrees C / 98 degrees F, the mountains and high altitude of this Ryokan helped cool things down, and the temperatures were cool and perfect at night. The owner is incredibly hospitable, and even gave us a ride to the train station and helped us figure out what train to catch the next day. This was the best experience of our trip. Stay here!

We reserved with the help of the Tsumago tourist information office and we came here after with the path in the woods from Magome. This ryokan is located 2km far from Tsumago. This place is wonderful, in the peace. The family that manage this site are very good and kind people. They try to help us in everything even if they don't speak english. The food was great. I hope to come back here in a future trip in Japan!

What a find! Recommended by friends, and so lovely. The hosts were delightful even though we had a language barrier. Location was excellent. Food was amazing. Close to Tsumago and perfect if you are walking the Nakasendo trail.

Im surprised that anyone was confused previously about prices. My email confirmation was very clear. Also would be pretty unlikely to have a night for 2 with 2 meals for 8000 yen, and of course you would pay for alcohol.

Really cant speak highly enough of this experience.

The moral of my story is: MAKE SURE everything is clear when you are booking and when you are asking for anything during your stay!!!

Let me just start by saying how beautiful this place is! Great for who's walking the Nakasendo, great for people who drive. And old family-ran guesthouse right by a river and close to the main road.
You get a traditional room, complementary tea and traditional bath robes (sort of kimono style stuff!) to be used as dressing gown or whatever, proper tatami beds which they'll make up for you while you're having dinner in the beautiful irori (typical living room with a fire in the middle and the hanging pot). Also the owner will keep the guests company by telling stories about the family and the Kiso valley, and it will also explain how a japanese dinner (and breakfast) are meant to be eaten.
I'm telling you people, it was AMAZING (despite the heavy smell of smoke coming from the fireplace, but I didn't mind it at all).

Now, well... the "obscure" things: during the booking (only via email and with people who don't speak a good english) I got told a certain tariff. Which, given the conversation, it was clearly intended for two people, or at least for the room itself (like any BnB or guesthouse would do).
But in the morning, when we got the bill, the price was x2. It was only LUCK that we actually had the cash, since it's middle of nowhere. (we are talking the equivalent of £170-180 in total!!!) That has left me rather upset.
Another thing is that we got charged for every glass of sake we had at dinner! (Luckily was only 3) And the landlord wasn't clear about this at all. At dinner he actually ASKED us "Do you want water, tea or sake??" without mentioning we had to pay for any of that. We would have had the sake anyway, but at least be clear beforehand!
I mean this place is on Tripadvisor (and they know that) so they are not stranger to technology (therefore there are ways to make people aware of things).

Japanese people are known for their politeness, good faith, good manners and for the way they take care of their guests.
Therefore I REFUSE to think that the "poor english" was just an excuse to "extort" more money for those non-japanese tourists.

Think about it: you get a twice as much bill as the one you got told, you get unexpectedly charged for the wine. Would you rather pay and moving on or stay there TRYING to make the owner understand about all that?
...There you go.

That's the only reason I'm giving 3. Otherwise it would be 6, if that was possible!!
So please don't get me wrong, this place is literally whatever you've ever dreamed about rural Japan! But is not the only one in the Tsumago-Magome area so I'm wondering about the others...
Make sure you make things clear beforehand, that's all.
