(From my eldest son, aged 15)

I wasn’t looking forward to sleeping on the floor in a 4 room traditional Japanese guest house, and I definitely wasn’t looking forward to eating a set meal of traditional Japanese food, but I was completely wrong. It is a very cozy place, with spacious rooms with a heated rug and electric lights. The food is excellent, and was the best traditional Japanese food I’ve eaten so far. Instead of one large meal, there are many small courses/portions. My brothers and I especially enjoyed the noodles. There is a shared bathroom, but it is big, and there is a working shower. The view is amazing, and one of the highlights is the after dinner entertainment involving singing, as Masa the host is an excellent singer. Breakfast was also traditional Japanese style, and I was surprised that I liked it so much. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

(The overall atmosphere is extremely hospitable and friendly - for example, as we were leaving we realised our bus was not running, and as it was raining rather hard, Masa drove us all to the station himself).

After 3 nights in Tokyo I thought it best to break our trip up with a stay at a traditional Minshuku. On a two week trip full of highlights this was right up there with the best parts of our whole trip.

If you have a chance to stay here, even for one night,do. It is an utterly tranquil place, filled with character, charm and warmth.

Our expectations were exceeded in every single way. I cannot recommend a stay here enough.

Room Tip: There are three rooms. Ask for the one that overlooks the pond!

How lucky we were to stay in this delightful Minshuku, on our walk from Magome to Tsumago. We did have trouble finding it from the track, but once there we were so warmly welcomed that any angst disappeared. What a lovely family, very warm and friendly. Our room overlooking their little pond, garden and rushing river was quite unique. The dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented and delicious- wonderful food! Quite the best ryokan we have stayed in - it will be one of our fondest memories of our trip to Japan.

Host was extremely courteous, helpful and nice. We hiked from Magome to Tsumago, and luckily, this place was about 25 minutes before Tsumago, so we were able to drop off our luggage before continuing to Tsumago to explore the village. :) I advise leaving Magome no later than 2 p.m. so you have plenty of time to enjoy the trail and Tsumago. The house is mesmerizing. So so serene and beautiful. We slept with a brook bubbling outside our window, the sound of water throughout the mountains lulling us to sleep. Food was fantastic. The hospitality of the host was wonderful. Even though he spoke little English, we felt so welcome!

A truly unique mesmerizing night. Make this a stop in your Japan experience, you won't forget it.

We initially had a little trouble finding the property, and asked two schoolgirls walking home if they knew the way. It turns out they were the granddaughters of the owners! Once there, we were made exceptionally welcome and shown to our room, with an explanation of the facilities. Our room was a decent size, the bedding was comfortable, and having the river a stone's throw away gave us a background of gently burbling water – very soothing.

The food was exquisite. A huge variety of dishes were put before us and each was delicious. Just go with the flow. The dumplings and tempura vegetables were especially excellent, with nothing below a standard of very good indeed.

You are treated as honoured guests, and this may involve some singing of traditional folk songs by the owner. Don't worry, his voice is as big as Mount Fuji, but as smooth as the best Japanese silk. Out of a 15 day stay in Japan, our one night stay here was one of the real highlights.
