“Excellent service and beautiful property”
Reviewed May 8, 2014

I managed a group of 24 upscale American, European and Australian clients at Uma for 5 nights in early May 2014. The property is absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend the villas, which come with a butler and private spa room. The service was impeccable, food incredible (they have brought in top-quality chefs from Bali and Thailand) and guides/activities excellent. The group also raved about the spa treatments. Martin, the new General Manager, is extremely attentive, accessible and manages a tight-ship. Bhutan is a friendly and unique destination and this hotel is gorgeous.

Room Tip: Valley view rooms and villas are recommended.

Everything about the intimate and serene Uma Paro is exceptional, from the exquisite grounds and rooms to the food and service. As long as you are going to Bhutan, don't undermine your experience with a cold room and blah tourist food; upgrading your accommodation is totally worth it, and Uma Paro was definitely the most memorable of the 5* hotels we stayed in (and among the most beautiful hotels I have ever visited). Absolutely superlative.

Had a 10 day trip with Uma and stayed in both their Paro and Punakha properties and was considerably impressed with every aspect of this stay. From Anuka who handled my initial query through to the reservation and multiple changes and many questions to my fantastic guide Kuenzang who greeted me on arrival with a white silk scarf and never hesitated to adjust itineraries based on my whims. The personalized service is not the only outstanding feature of this property, it is also the beautiful location of the hotel overlooking the valley, the amenities including the mandatory (in my opinion) hot stone bath, the amazing food (both a traditional bhutanese menu and more classic western dishes if you palate is feeling unadventurous every night), the sheer range of activities on offer, and of course the hushed interior and tasteful decor that revels in the colours, images and materials of Bhutan. Like Bhutan itself I can not say enough good things about Uma Paro, and recommend highly their other property in Punakha for the same reasons as above.

From arriving at the hotel to leaving everything was 10/10. Super views of the Paro Valley.

Travelling to Bhutan is not a cheap option BUT I would recommend that you should go for the more expensive options as the additional costs are actually good value when you get a 10/10 experience!

Rooms very comfortable, great nights sleep.

Breakfast and Dinner are included in the rate and both were excellent.

The spa was good, and the pool very welcome and a size that you could swim and get some exercise.

On our first trip to Bhutan in 2008 we stayed at all five of the Aman lodges. They were all terrific in every way. However, the price has gone through the roof. So this time we opted to try other properties, including the Uma Paro. Turns out that it was a good decision. We thoroughly enjoyed our two days there. The service was perfect, the food was great, and the accommodations were very good.

We stayed here on our last day of 10 days trip in Bhutan and that turned out to be the right choice. In Bhutan, there were not many high end hotels, and for the daily tariff of 250 (small group of 2 with 30 add on) per day you could only get an average 3 stars hotel with bear minmal facilities. Any top end hotel you have to pay the so call differential but I found the differential could really mean a full price. Anyway, after a long journey through the long and winding road of Bhutan up and down the moutains and through the dusty road (they have a lot of landslides in the rainy season and they did not do much to protect the slope from sliding again, and there were many sections of the road covered with dried mud and dust, so very dusty when you were passing through those section which could happens 4 or 5 time within an hour of drive), it would be feeling entering heaven when you step in Uma Paro.

The food was fantastic and I would say it was the best food that I even have during the whole trip in Bhutan. Breakfast was also fantastic but when comparing wtih Uma Punakha, they only offer you one choice whereas in Uma Punakha I could pick 2 or three items from the breakfast menu.

The Stone Bath and the Massage were both a must try item, especially after the long journey but please do book it much early in advance. Our guide only help us to book it the day before resulting in only two time slots left, either the 2pm or the 8pm. We took the 8pm but after a full meal it might not be the best timing for spa and massage. After the stone bath, you could ask for to take a look at how the hot stone was prepared and see where it was dropped to your batch from outside. That's quite interesting.

Overall, it was the best accommodation that I have in my trip to Bhutan, and considering the price tag, and comparing to the crazy price tag of that of Aman, it would be obvious choice to stay here in Uma Paro. I will strongly recommend this one.

Room Tip: Valley View Room could offer you a view of the valley and on our day of visit the next day morning w...

We got a reasonable deal of paying USD600 for a night's stay (standard room) inclusive of dinner and breakfast. Considering that an appetiser, mains and dessert will set a you back USD100 per person, breakfast at say USD40 pp, the room would costs approximately USD320. The room is tiny and we are thankful to have the foresight to take only an overnighter, leaving the main luggage with our guide. For a property with such a huge space, a little more room wouldn't hurt as we had to skip and hop to get around and being Chinese, I'm not very big either. Food is good (or very good in Bhutan standard) and a relief after days of cargo rice, vegetables and eggs but the french beans is tough and asparagus stringy. Service is great. Toiletries are nice. We didn't get any barking dogs but the heavy flat pillows are now what we like.

Dear RinaGHTan,

Thanks a lot for your review and your feedback.

Our standard room category, the Forest View Rooms, are certainly not as spacious as some of our other categories and Suites. Furthermore, thanks to our extensive grounds, we offer as well wonderful free standing Villas, which count as the the most luxurious accommodation in Bhutan.

We thank you for your compliments regarding our food and our service and we truly hope to welcome you back one day to the beautiful Kingdom of Bhutan.

With very best regards and Tashi Delek!
