Hacienda Guachipelin
Reviewed July 4, 2006

We took our daughter (in her forties) and 2 grandchildren (ages 10 and 11) to Hacienda Guachipelin and spent three nights and fabulous days there.

The best vacation our daughter and grandchildren ever had. They spent every possible minute on tours - everything from tubing the river, riding the zip lines, and their biggest love - riding horses. The tour guides and the Hacienda personnel were completely qualified and very safety minded. At the same time friendly and made sure that the guests had a wonderful experience.

The Hacienda was a little more than an hour from Liberia. There was about 15 kilometers of dirt road which could easily by navigated by a regular automobile.

The meals were all buffet style. Many of the items were repeated during our stay. But the food was good and the fruit drinks were delicious. If you want alcoholic drinks, there were 2 for 1 cocktails each night we were there.

We highly recommend Hacienda Guachipelin for everyone who wants an active and fun Costa Rican experience. The kids are already talking about going back....they say "Better than Disneyworld.

First, it is a cool looking ranch. It is still laid out along the lines of the original ranch and many of the rooms are converted bunkhouses. This adds a lot to the aesthetic charm -- but it also creates a problem. The ranch hands all lived next to the stables. The back wall of our room was a wall of the stable. Our room smelled pretty strongly of horse manure, and because there is no air-conditioning, you couldn't close the windows. In the morning, the horses woke us up at feeding time. Their wild neighing definitely added local flavor and we were not sleeping in anyway.

The food is truly, truly bad. The buffet (at both Dinner and Breakfast) was generally inedible and frequented by flies and bees. But there is no where else to eat in the area, so you just have to appreciate what you get.

Having said all of the above, it is a neat ranch. If you can accept it as a ranch then it's a good place to stay. Moreover, if you want to visit Rincon De La Vieja, then it is really the only game in town.

Went to Costa Rica last March and stayed in a condo on Playa Portrero for a week. The beach was fabulous as were the people. It's a very laid back place with little to do except relax. Was wonderful. Then we drove to the the National Park at Rincon and stayed at Hacienda de la Guachapilen. We stayed in the newest area but any of the lodging would be fine. Food was fabulous as were the grounds and pool. Hiked with a guide from the Hacienda into the National Rainforest. Well worth it. Had an incredible time in the rainforest that we will remember forever.

We recently stayed at Hacienda Guachipelin just below the Rincon de la Vieja national park and had a wonderful time.

As others have said the rooms are basic but clean and well presented. We stayed in the original row of rooms which is just between the lodge and the dining area, so didn't have to contend with any 'farm noises'. Anyway, we were too tired after the various outings to do anything other than have a full and deep sleep.

Everything about the area is beatiful and the hotel staff are very helpful and ready to please.

Be aware though that you are isolated in this part of the world and you have no choice on where or what to eat other than the hotel's restaurant - new building with wonderful views and the buffets. Having said that the food is just varied enough between the lunch and dinner (we stayed 3 nights) to be 'different' and at $12 for lunch & dinner, and $6 for breakfast they were very reasonably priced considering the monopoly position.

How to spend time? Well the hotel organises a full adventure activity day including canopy tour (zipping, absailing, tazan swinging, wall climbing etc) which is tremendous fun. The crew are helpful and very safety conscious. We're over 50, relatively fit and rediscovered 'fun'! Also included in the day was tubing on scale 3 rapids which is if you don't mind a few spills and knocks is also funtastic. The crew quickly attach themselves to the less able and guide them through the worst of the rapids and are very helpful. ONE WORD of warning - the water is powerful enough - even in the dry season - to 'rip' the wedding ring off my finger, so give your personals like that to the guides who stayt on the shore. They can also take great photos of you coming through the rapids! You have a choice of mechanised transport to the rapids or horse ride. Take the horse every time! Even if you haven't ridden for some years (we've not since being teens) the horses are docile and gentle and the track down to the rapids is very scenic.
In the afternoon we did the mud baths and again took the horses to get there (we spent 3 hours 'in the saddle' and only a little sore at the end). The mud baths are OK but nothing really special.

The following day explore the park - there are a number of trails there including an easy 3km 'mini volcano experience' if you don't want to hike right up to the rim as well as some trails in the area of the hotel leading to waterfalls for a cooling dip.

In the evenings there's sometimes a marimba band providing a little entertainment and the pool side bar is great to meet up and chat over your experiences with other guests.

If you're going to Costa Rica make sure you spend a couple of days at Hacienda Guachipelin

Similar to earlier posting below from Calgary.
We stayed at the hacienda for 2 nights during the first week of Dec. 05. Our first night we arrived just in time to witness the sunset from the lookout. There was majestic colour against the mountain backdrop -- fantastic.
The room was a little small in area, likewise was the bed and not super comfortable. Just adequate. The dining area offered a great view , the buffet meals were delicious and the service very good. The hacienda boss and all the staff were very approachable and friendly.
We signed up for the day adventure which had enough options to match our interests. Our guide the next morning was Albeenos (spell?), hardly any english but was just wonderful company and we learned much about park anyway. If you're past 40, take
the river tubing option only if you're adventurous and young at heart -- it's big fun with major bumps to rock you around.
There were only two negatives to our experience with this place. Even after confirmation, their van didn't meet us at the airport to shuttle us there. And the second night was a difficult sleep due to their noisy livestock.
However, the many positive discoveries in between far outweighed those inconveniences for us. A delightful place.

We spent two nights at Hacienda Guachipelin and it was one of the best travel experiences that we have ever had. The grounds are beautiful. The food is good, but what made our stay here most memorable were the guides. Our first day we did the $70 a day--pick your own adventures package. We did the canyon canapy tour. It was great. The guides were outstanding. You can tell that they geniunely love their job and that thier number one concern is your safety. After our canopy tour we went horseback riding and hiking in the park. Although our guide did not speak English and we speak no Spanish, we had a great day with him. The buffet was very good. The next morning we did the tubing! That was quite the adventure. Again, the guides were outstanding. I really had no idea that this was as adventurous as it was and the guides did a fantastic job of keeping us all safe and ensuring that we had a great time. The park is beautiful and the hotel has several hiking trails close by. If you are looking for a bit of an adventure, an authentic setting, and beautiful surroundings, you will not be disappointed.

We began our Costa Rica vacation with two nights/one day at Guachipelin and enjoyed our time there.
They picked us up at the Liberia airport and found the staff and the overall hotel a nice place to stay. My wife and I were the only people on their one day $70 tour (canyon zip lines, horseback and hike into Rincon de la Vieja, mud bath and water falls) and found it very enjoyable. Even though our guide, Rene, didn't speak english and my spanish is not that strong we had a great day with him.
The only caveat that I would offer to others is if you are not renting a vehicle make sure that you have transportation arranged to get onto your next destination.
We booked on line with Interbus and found out the morning they were supposed to pick us up that they had bumped us and not notified us that they wouldn't pick us up. We had to scramble to get one of the lodge employees to take us to Liberia where we had to meet another driver to take us to Monteverde. Overall, a $150 last minute 5 hour trip. Oh well, live and learn.
