“Amazing Experience”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

My daughter and I spent 9 days at the Blue River Resort. It was amazing! The staff is very helpful and courteous. The activities offered are fun and the guides are WONDERFUL!! I highly recommend the Blue River Resort & Hot Springs for those of you who need to get away from everything and enjoy nature in its raw form. I did not want to come back!!! We miss the staff & Echo (dog) who will join activities and follow the group around!! It was simply AMAZING!!! The food was great!

Room Tip: Get room close to dinning room & spa!

We recently spent 3 nights at the Blue River resort.
We made arrangements in advance for shuttle service from our previous hotel. Our shuttle pick up was prompt and we had a very comfortable ride, even over the bumpy mountain roads. The driver was friendly and knowledgeable about the area.

The grounds of the resort are absolutely stunning. From the blue river itself, the botanical gardens & butterflies, the flowers surrounding the pools and the gardens around the rooms. We really enjoyed the pools. We found the temperatures changed from day-to-day and it was nice to be able to move from warm, to hot, to cool, etc.

My husband used the gym a few times and found it to be very clean and well equipped. However, there was no drinking water available. I recommend that management consider adding a water cooler in the gym/spa for guests using those facilities. He was able to buy a bottle of water from the restaurant after his workout. He also noted that when he went in the gym the first day there were 3 staff members sitting out front chatting. They saw him walk in and said hi but when he had trouble finding the light switch to turn on fans and lights, they didn't make a move to come help him, even though they could clearly see him in there walking around through the windows. He also had to go back out to ask them for a towel.

That, however, was the only time during our stay that we didn't experience anything other than amazing service from the staff at the resort. They were all very friendly, knowledgeable and other than that experience in the gym, helpful. The front desk and tour staff in particular were all amazing.

Our room was very large, clean and comfortable. There was a fridge in the room, and I recommend bringing drinks and snacks for in between meals.

The food in the restaurant was very good. We did find the service to be a little slow, considering they seemed to be very well staffed in a very small restaurant (2 servers & a bus boy for 10 tables). The food always came quickly enough, but after finishing our meal, the wait staff was slow to return to clear plates or ask if you wanted another drink or dessert or your bill. But we also didn't really have anywhere else to be in a hurry, so this is only a minor complaint.

We took a beautiful hike to a waterfall with Felix and Echo (the dog), which we thoroughly enjoyed. The hike was not strenuous and would be appropriate for almost any fitness level, and Felix was happy to go at any pace, or take a break at any time.

We also went tubing, which was very fun, but be warned that it is a little rough and there is potential for injury. The staff were very helpful and safety conscious and we had a lot of fun, and took home only a few minor bruises.

We also enjoyed (well, I did - my husband wasn't convinced) the volcano mud bath that was free and along the trail in the botanical garden. It was something different and fun.

We really enjoyed our few days here. It was very quiet and relaxing. I recommend it for a short stay. We travelled as a couple and it was exactly what we were looking for. Although we did see families there with kids, I don't think I would return with my kids (8 & 10), as they would probably find it too quiet.

We just got back from a vacation to Blue River Resort and Spa, and we absolutely loved it! Everyone is so friendly and helpful, the food is fantastic and the setting with the hot springs is great! We went hiking with Felix and Echo (the dog, who goes on all the hiking trips, and even follows the zip-liners!) to a beautiful blue lagoon to go swimming. It was so much fun! We spent some time in the pool and hot tubs as well, don't miss those! And the botanical gardens and butterfly sanctuary are so pretty! We had great food every day, and great service as well (thanks, JJ!). Although it's a challenge to get to Blue River, give it a try if you want to see a beautiful part of Costa Rica that's definitely off the beaten path!

We recently spent three nights at the Blue River Resort. The property is really lovely with well maintained pools and beautiful botanical gardens. Our room was well appointed and clean and the beds were comfortable. Although easy to find, the roads in were rough so we had to go slowly. The resort is pretty isolated and needed a few more amenities like a small shop for snacks and other. They do sell a few things in the spa like toiletries, but there is no place to pick up snacks for the room or to take with us on hikes. The breakfast was nice but the restaurant menu needs an overhaul and we were ready for a change after day 2. The food was just ok and choices were very limited. There needs to be more information in the rooms as well about the property and surrounding area. It would be nice to see a few "on resort" activities, especially for kids. I would recommend this property to friends, but only for a short stay.

Room Tip: The noise level is a bit high between attached rooms. We could hear our neighbours talking clearly...

After many slow miles of very bad roads one reaches this welcome gem. The cabinas are very nice, roomy and clean. Everyone there try's very hard to make your stay exactly what you want. The extensive gardens can occupy many hours, the pools are warm and comfortable but not hot. The restaurant does an excellent job and works hard to satisfy your wishes. The owner and a dedicated staff circulate evenings asking genuinely how everything is and if there is anything you wish. I would definitely recommend Blue River Resort for anyone wanting some quiet time in a beautiful spot.

Great hospitality and wonderful setting! We were fortunate enough to meet the owner Danny. The staff makes sure you're well taken care of and the accommodations were greater than we expected. Also, Blue River has super good guides whether your ziplining or horseback riding. Overall, an excellent place to stay, some of the best food we've experienced in Costa Rica!

Nice hotel, good service, clean villas but we went to the river, no one told us we had to pay extra for nothing, just to enter the property and go to the waterfall, really not reasonable since we were staying in the hotel....

Room Tip: 40km of bad road, patience...
