“Would never stay here again”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

I booked this hotel based on the trip advisor reviews so I feel compelled to review it given that my husband and I didn't really like staying here. The resort is in the middle of nowhere (not near any towns or restaurants) so are stuck there for all meals. The food is bad, the menu is limited and the service in the one restaurant is terrible. At lunch we ordered a house salad, checking with the waitress what we could eat because we don't eat meat (my husband for religious reasons). At dinner we ordered the house salad again not realizing that the restaurant adds pork to it. We explained that we don't eat pork and wanted to send it back. The waiter started to freak out, one of the resort managers came over and asked if we could just take it off and still eat the salad. We said no. They came back within 2 minutes saying they made us a new salad but we found pork in that salad as well. We didn't eat but were still charged.
The next day there was a miscommunication with the activity we wanted to book. We thought we were going on a 2.5 hour hike. Instead we ended up having to waste an hour of our day driving to a place for a 15 minute hike, which I figured out was the same place we had gone zip-lining the day before. The manager agreed to refund us our money after I said 'Im not paying $50 for this'. But it was still annoying as we would have likely done another activity had we known what we had signed up for.
Bottom line - there are so many great places to visit in Costa Rica (we stayed in 2 amazing B&B's afterwards in Monteverde & Tamarindo) - I really wouldn't want to waste my time at Blue River Resort.

My husband and I purchased a groupon to stay here as part of our honeymoon. We had a 4 wheel drive vehicle which made the bumpy drive much easier! There are lots of signs to guide you to the resort once you hit the dirt road portion. The accommodations are wonderful. The cabins are really spacious but it still feels cozy. We spent a lot of time on the porch which is landscaped to feel really private. There were many naps on the hammock listening to the rain! The hot springs are awesome and we spent a lot of time hopping from pool to pool. We both had spa appointments and I loved falling asleep to the rain while getting a massage. Ahhhhh. We went ziplining and really enjoyed our tour guides--super fun even if we did get bouts of major rain! Ziplining over the waterfall was really amazing. The food was fine but we definitely had better at other locations during our 2 week total trip. I recommend having some snacks on hand since the restaurant is only open during specific times. We stayed 3 nights and thought it was the perfect amount of time for us. We chose to relax more than adventure and had a great time!

I proposed to my fiancee in a non-traditional manner, with a trip instead of a ring. Blue River Resort came up on LivingSocial, and I jumped at the chance to enjoy an eco-resort in a tropical locale for a really decent price. This resort is quite beautiful, situated near a volcanic mountain chain that is stunning on a clear day, and in the middle of extensive rain forests. My fiancee kept saying, "this is so much better than a ring", so I count the trip as a success.

6 days and 5 nights was the perfect length of time to spend at the resort. After 4-5 days, the amenities available there began to get repetitive. Breakfast was the only real disappointment during the trip; while it is included with the fees, your choice becomes "American" or "typical" - bacon and toast or rice, beans, and cheese (both meals come with coffee/tea, OJ, assorted fruit, and eggs). It would have been nice to see more variety at this meal. We were offered a great breakfast buffet on Sunday, but this disappeared during the weekdays.

The adventure trips were the real gem of this resort. Zip-lining down from "the canopy" for 1km, crossing over the waterfalls 3 times, was spectacular, even on a gray and rainy day! I've managed ropes courses in the past, and while the guides were a little crazy with themselves, they ensured that guests felt comfortable and were secure at all times - very safe and fun! The Tarzan swing at the end is a total adrenaline rush. We also took advantage of the water tubing. We thought this would be a quiet and peaceful trip, but were surprised to find out it was tubing down the Blue River itself on class 3 rapids! My fiancee enjoyed this more than I did; I am 6'1" and lanky, and fell out of the tube at least three times. She is 5'3" and a small build, and was able to stay on her tube much better, only falling off once. While the two guides that came with us did their best to keep us away from the hairier parts of the river, I still came out with some minor bumps and scrapes - tubing is not for the faint of heart! Nevertheless, we both really enjoyed this trip too, with smiles permanently glued to our faces during the whole 1.5hrs, and helmets, lifevests, elbowpads, and kneepads protected our vitals from serious harm.

We really enjoyed our trip to the resort, but you have to have the right mindset to do so. It is 1.5hrs from the airport to the resort, and most of the car trip is along a very rugged, pot-holed road, necessitating some serious driving and suspension (avoid the taxi vultures at the airport, they really don't know where the resort is - call for the resort shuttle at the information desk!). The resort is remote, and so they treat their own sewage, and occasionally its scent would waft up to the deck of our cabin, but inside and elsewhere it was not really noticeable. When we arrived the first day at the resort it was raining so hard that a portion of our cabin walls weeped, but this did not make the cabin itself any less comfortable - and you ARE in the middle of a jungle after all!

This will definitely be an adventure for you, but realize that it is a rugged beauty you will experience. The customer service is stellar though - the resort owner himself drove us back to the airport on the final day, stopping the truck at a spectacular vista so we could take a couple pictures. If you want to visit Costa Rica, this is a great place to start!

Resort was amazingly fun. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Food was great (especially the casada!). I would definitely go back. Make sure you go see the blue river via rafting or canopy tours.

Getting there is a little rough, the roads are rocky but doable in a compact car (during dry season at least)

We traveled to Blue River Resort and stayed for 3 nights. We traveled from Liberia and found the directions pretty easy from Liberia, but what we didn't expect was the road conditions for the last 20 kilometers of the trip. The unpaved road was pretty rough and since it had rained over the last several days there were huge puddles, mud and lots of rocks to steer away from. I would definitely not drive this road at night and take note that sundown is around 5:30pm and the trip from Liberia is about 1 1/2 hours. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND an SUV vehicle if you decide to drive there. The journey for us seemed endless because you are going super slow as you are going up the mountains and you are also sharing the road with cows, bulls, horses, pedestrians, and other vehicles. It definitely can be scary, but super cool at the same time. The rural countryside is breathtaking, green and beautiful.

Once we arrived at the resort the receptionist staff (Kira & Felix) were super nice, friendly and willing to help with any questions or suggestions and they both speak English. They were super amazing!

Once we checked in we drove to our cabana (#203) which was really nice, clean and super spacious. I loved the balcony with the hammock and two rocking chairs. Perfect for lounging and relaxing.

Once inside, we had two full sized beds which were comfy, but after the first night we woke up with bug bites all over our legs, but the weird thing is that the bites didn't look like mosquito bites as they weren't itchy or puffy, but a round red flat circle. After the first night we put on bug repellent before going to sleep and that seemed to avoid new bites.

The bathroom was super huge with a large shower that could fit literally 6 people! We also loved the large closet space which was great to store your luggage out of the way.

As to the food, you are forced to eat at their one restaurant due to the remoteness of the resort location, and while it's not a bad place, but it could improve. The food is average and expensive. We did like some of their dishes, like the mahi-mahi club sandwich (a special) and loved the homemade hummus & pita. In my opinion it would have been nice to see some more typical Costa Rican food on the menu, instead of the American style food on the menu which was just ok. I would definitely bring snacks for your room .

Now, let's talk activities. They rocked!!! We booked the horse back riding tour with Giovanni who was super nice, friendly and a good teacher who put our nervous 10 yr old at ease. The tour took about 3 hours and we saw great scenery topped by seeing an amazing waterfall!

We also did the canopy tour which was also amazing. Our tour guides were Ronald & David and they were super nice & cool.

Everyone at the resort lives on the premises and works long hours. If you are happy with their service, please remember to tip them. They make their living by catering to the visitors.

I would highly recommend this place if you want to get away from it all and enjoy pure natural beauty. It's amazing too see how some people live a simple life and live off the land.

you can travel to the hotel with car, you would need suv or truck to get into the hotel
its 14 miles with the rocky , horrible road , it can take 35 mins in 14 miles
Staff is very friendly but i doubt if its worth all the trouble.
no telephone in the room , i had to drive to the front desk if i want to get something.
Bed sheet should be pure white color, not sure if they are clean.

Room Tip: nice hot spring but very far and difficult to get to the hotel
