Our family of four stayed at Blue River from July 21 to 24, 2012. We enjoyed the beautiful, natural surroundings, the great service and the hot springs. The owner of this resort has an amazing vision for what it will be and is well on his way to creating a truly special destination.

The cabins are clean and very large. They can very comfortably sleep 4-5. The beds are comfortable and the hammock on the porch of the cabin was a great place to lie around, read and relax.

We only did one excursion which was ziplining. The zipline course was a lot of fun and the kids had a great time. The guides were very helpful and the equipment well maintained and safe. We even saw some leaf cutter ants hard at work at one of the zipline platforms. The highlight is the line over the waterfall, so if you do the ziplining, don't be afraid to look down and enjoy the surroundings.

We saw several very interesting plants and animals during our stay. The hummingbird garden had quite a few hummingbirds flying around, and the butterfly garden had some beautiful specimens. If you go, be sure to take the guided tour so you don't miss anything.

The pools were great and the kids especially enjoyed the water slide/cool pool. We experienced quite a bit of rain during our stay, but that's to be expected during the rainy season. There's a reason they call it a rainforest. We didn't really mind, since we were spending time in the warm pools getting wet anyway.

The food was pretty good. A little bland for our taste, but adequate. The included breakfast provided plenty of food to start the day, but I would recommend picking up a few snacks for between meals since this resort is so remote.

The drive to the resort is a bumpy one but we saw that as part of the adventure. The 1 1/2 hour drive from Liberia takes you through several small villages where you can see how the locals really live. We even took a trip back into Liberia during our stay, got lost, saw lots of the real parts of CR, and made it back safely.

Room Tip: Since this is such a small resort, all the rooms are convenient to the spa, pools and restaurant.

I returned yesterday from great trip at Blue Springs. The staff was friendly and courteous (to the point of remember our names while we stayed there) We felt like we were guests in a good friend's home rather than just staying at a resort.

The Good:

The food was amazing!! The Casada con Pollo is DA BOMB
The staff treats you like family
The pools and Hot springs are refreshing!
The Zip Line tour was amazing Ivan and Joaquin were superb guides
The rooms were large and spacious with AC and great TVs
The whole resort makes you feel like you're in a tropical Paradise with no worries in the world

The Bad:
The road to get to the hotel from Liberia is a bit bumpy (but still pretty great views of Rincon de La Vieja)
The beds were a bit hard, and the linens might have needed changing.

All in all was a great stay and I would not hesitate going back!

We had booked this hotel because it was near Liberia airport and we wanted to break up part of our drive. In hotel they state that they are 1 hour from Liberia. It took us over 1 hour just to get to hotel once we left the highway as entered onto a 26km+ gravel-filled, bumpy "road". Once at lodge we hit the hot springs which were nice. We had also chosen hotel because of butterfly farm, turtles, hummingbirds, etc that were on property. The butterfly farm was super tiny and only saw 2 different types of butterflies. The hummingbird observatory area was empty for us. We did see a couple just flying around the property but nothing in the designated area nor in the frog/turtle pond did we see either frogs or turtles. This was a huge disappointment. We then realized that we had incorrectly booked for 2 nights and needed tonleave and they would not even partially refund our booking. They had said had it been peak season that they would have, which didn't make sense to me. Would think that is when you wouldn't refund since they could have sold room to someone else. Anyway, overall was disappointing stay and definitively not worth the drives or bumps.

Please know that it takes about an 1 1/2 hours to get here from Liberia Airport. At night it could take longer. Your car should have good clearance or be a 4x4. If not it also slows the time.

If you choose one of the closer hotels it will be on the other side of Rincon de la Vieja in the dry pasture land, no tin the rain forest, with blue rivers and natural mineral hot springs. There is so much to do here, that if you expect to arrive in the afternoon and depart for the airport the next day, you will not be able to take advantage of all the activities.

I don't want to be too picky, because everyone is entitled to their opinion. But our butterfly farm is larger than average with several species that hatch each morning. And if you were to sit in the hummingbird garden they are all around, feeding and flitting about.

I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding. If anyone should have further questions, e-mail us or phone us. Its always better to avoid such misunderstandings.

We really couldn't have asked for more from our resort experience. The staff were friendly and helpful, and there was so much to do on the grounds alone. I do recommend renting a truck, as it's an hour and a half from the nearest town--over unpaved roads--and hiring people to take you offsite is *really expensive*. We loved the bullet slide and lived in the mineral pools and the botanical gardens. Also, if you are staying for more than a few days, stop in Liberia first and buy groceries to save money =) The rooms are clean and gorgeous. I highly recommend the horseback riding trip to the waterfalls.

Room Tip: They're all good rooms!
