“Wonderful Get Away”

We had a wonderful time at the J. Patrick house. We stayed in the clare and had the whole house to ourselves in the evening. The breakfast was wonderful. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone.

  • Liked — Having the house to ourselves.
  • Disliked — Having other drunk guests come to the house to get ice during the evening

This is a really lovely B&B, where the staff try to go the extra mile to make your stay a special one. We stayed here during an anniversary trip, and there was a lovely little bag of chocolates on our bed saying happy anniversary when we arrived, which was a lovely thoughtful touch. We really enjoyed the wine in the house when we arrived, it was fun chatting to fellow guests. Our bedroom was lovely, the bed was so comfortable and the real fire was nice too. I slept like a log. The bathroom isn't the most luxurious thing you will ever see, but it was clean and did the job!

It is a short drive into 'town' if you are having a meal, which means you need a designated driver. There are lots of great places to eat.

Breakfast was very nice again, and the garden was full of hummingbirds which were adorable.

Overall I think the extra touches and attention to detail make this a great place to stay.

  • Liked — Personal touches and attention to guest's comfort
  • Disliked — Distance away from town

We stayed at this B&B for two nights in the Clare room, the only room in the main house. The room style was lacy and flowery; it was not overly large and the bathroom was quite dated, but it was adequate for a couple of nights. The bed was quite comfortable.

The negatives for us at this property are small issues, but taken all together were a bit frustrating. There are no screens on the windows, so we couldn’t leave them open at night, and the room became quite warm. There is an iron and ironing board in the room, but the iron only partially worked and the board was a mini style that sat on a table and was hard to use. The closet in the room was used for general storage, so there was little room for our things. There are no TVs or phones in the rooms; you either appreciate this or not, and it is clearly stated in all of their literature.

A wine and cheese hour is held in the evening, and an excellent full, hot breakfast is provided in the morning. In addition, milk and cookies are delivered to each room in the evening. There is not enough seating in either the living room or the kitchen for all guests, so if the inn is full there is potential for people to have to join either the wine hour or breakfast, which can be awkward. Depending on the innkeeper there that day, breakfast can be a chatty affair; it’s only served until 9:30 a.m., and if you’re not a morning person the pressure to be continually engaged with the innkeeper and your fellow guests can be a bit much.

One factor to consider when staying in the Clare room is that you can hear everything taking place downstairs. This was not an issue for us, and likely wouldn’t be for most people as most will be participating in the wine hour and breakfast if they are in the house, but if you plan to skip either the wine hour or breakfast in favour or a nap or a sleep-in, you should likely choose a room in the carriage house.

Overall, our stay was fine, but we've stayed at B&Bs we enjoyed more.

I took my husband away for a romantic weekend getaway and much needed R & R from our toddler. We had never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast and the J Patrick House was SOO wonderful! We were made to feel right at home the moment we walked in. The people were so friendly, the rooms were romantic and the food and wine were fabulous! We were given awesome recommendations for restaurants in town and not having a tV or phone in the room was such a great break from the world! The icing on the cake was coming back to the room and having delicious milk and cookies waiting for us as a bedtime snack! My husband and I can't wait to return again soon!

  • Liked — The hospitality
  • Disliked — Honestly, everything was great, no complaints!

The J. Patrick House was our first B&B on our Harley Davidson Honeymoon tour of California. We arrived late but our key and info for our stay had been left as promised. The room was very homely an as we were chuffed to see that a little gift & card was left for us, congratulating us on our marriage. The cookies were delicious too and a welcome snack after a long day,

Breakfast (stuffed french toast in particular) was delicious, especially if you have a sweet tooth. John, the owner, made us and other guests very welcome and it was a shame we didn't have time to look aroun the lovely garden.

The only downside for us was that due to location (up a hill) we couldn't quite figure out if we could walk to any restaurants on main street (in the dark), so had to gear up again for a bike ride. But that's probably less of a worry for those in a car!

We stayed at J Patrick House for two nights during a thrree week tour of California. We particularly wanted to stay near to Hearst Castle and Cambria is well located being only 15 minutes away.
If you want to stay any where near Cambria you just have to stay at The J Patrick House. Quality, friendliness and charm await you. One of the very best 'B&B's' we've stayed in and we have stayed in some outstanding places before. Everywhere you will find attention to detail and loving care and it felt like home with excellent cookies left in the evening and piping hot coffee available from 7 in the morning. Of course the breakfasts were excellent.
It was easy to use their website and book the accommodation. We will definately stay again if we visit the area.
