We dinned at Madeline’s during a one night stay in Cambria. Chose Madeline’s based on positive reviews on TA. We were staying at the El Colibri which was a pleasant 10 minute walk away. We were in CA as part of a 3 week driving tour and in that time ate at some high end restaurants down to making our own sandwiches and everything in-between and Madeline’s was right up there with the best.

As we tend to do while on holiday we went for the chefs tasting menu which consisted of 6 courses and a bonus course from the chef which consisted of in-house smoked and cured bacon chop. You can pretty much chose your courses but we decided to tell our waiter to let the chef showcase his food as we are not picky eaters and to decide for us, we find that this allows us to try things that we may not normally have tried otherwise. Each course was excellent with a great balance of seafood and red meat. The atmosphere of the restaurant is intimate; the waiter was friendly without being over-intrusive and was knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. I decided to try a few bottles of the local ale (Firestone) there were 2 varieties and both were excellent, the waiter informed me that the brewery was close by and a tour was available but unfortunately we didn’t have the time. For around $65 a head for food I found for the quality to be excellent value. If you want to treat yourself whilst in Cambria look no further than Madeline’s.

Call ahead for reservations on busy weekends! Ask for a table near the windows. The service was phenomenal for a busy Christmas Day and we had one of the two best tables in the restaurant! Will go each time we are in Cambria!

Madeline's came well recommended from our friends and also by the B&B where we were staying. It is a charming, very small restaurant with big flavors. We had a delicious dinner which was presented well and had a fabulous taste. We ordered different items so that we could taste more and were so glad we did. We will certainly go back the next time in Cambria. A special note...on their website, they posted a coupon which allowed us to have either a free appetizer or half of bottle of wine with purchase of 2 entrees. Not sure if they offer it all of the time, but it was a nice addition to an already wonderful dinner.

My wife and I just returned home from celebrating our 25th anniversary in Cambria. We honeymooned there and had returned a few times in our first years of marriage, but we hadn’t been back in the past 15 years so this called for an extra-special celebration. When booking our room, I asked about a romantic restaurant and our innkeeper suggested Madeline’s. I checked some of the reviews online and was pleased to see many overall great reviews. Now after our experience there I felt I had to add my own review—especially to help offset some of those crazy one-star reviews being posted!

The day before our anniversary I stopped in to talk to Chef David to inquire about what he felt would make for the most memorable and unique meal. Along with reserving the nicest table in the restaurant, he suggested the “Chef’s Tasting Menu” with the added wine to go along with each of the 6 courses. Although it sounded like a lot of food (and wine!) we couldn’t be happier to have trusted his judgment.

We arrived a bit early to find our table ready and waiting. Our waitress, Lisa, was both friendly and knowledgeable as she thoroughly explained each course offering while also providing detailed information about each wine selection. That became the most pleasurable and interesting part of our evening since each wine was so perfectly matched to the type of food we were eating. We enjoyed a sparkling wine (champagne) along with crab cake appetizers. Pinot Grigio accompanied an outstanding locally-grown mushroom soup. Riverstar Sauvignon Blanc was served with our salads—the Butter Lettuce and Madeline’s Salad—both delicious. The first of our two main entrees, an amazing lobster encrusted Canadian sole which was the fresh fish special of the evening, was accompanied by a Chardonnay from Harmony Cellars. Our second entrée was one of the best filet mignons we’ve ever tasted and was accompanied by a hearty Cabernet Sauvignon. Our final course, served with two special Port dessert wines, was the Bananas Foster which provided the dramatic, picture-worthy ending to an amazingly delightful and romantic meal.

We could not be happier with the entire experience. Although we ate and drank our way through 6 courses in a little ever two hours, the proportions and timing of each were designed appropriately to not overwhelm but rather enhance the entire experience. Chef David personally served us our desert and each of the other staff members/waiters were equally friendly and helpful. Our wine glasses were switched appropriately prior to each course, our bread basket was never empty, and the necessary utensils were always delivered by one of the friendly staff members moments before the next course appeared. In fact, this became part of the fun of the evening since the utensils served as a clue to what our next course might be. The food (and wine) was amazing and delicious and we would be hard-pressed to say what item we enjoyed most since they were all so equally delectable.

If you are looking for a unique, romantic, and extra-special way to celebrate that special occasion with the one you love, you will not be disappointed by Chef David and Madeline’s!

Madeline's is a cozy and charming little restaurant on Main Street in the quaint beach town of Cambria. The restaurant only has about 10 tables, so be sure to make a reservation. The atmosphere is romantic and delightful, with lots of delicious wines to choose from and a unique yet sophisticated menu. I had a stuffed chicken with brie, which was divine. My husband had a stuffed pheasant canelloni, which was also delicious. Make sure to visit their website and print out a coupon for a free appetizer...a nice touch. We had the tuna, which was our least favorite choice of the evening, as it was slightly overcooked. For dessert, we had a chocolate cake that had just the right amount of richness. Overall, any foodie will love Madeline's creative and sophisticated menu in a charming ambiance!
