The old cottage atmosphere is charming and the food is excellent. There are checker and chess boards set up to play while you wait for your table. They do not take credit cards but they do take checks!

Jane had the Cioppino, I had fresh Halibut. Both were great. Definitely a restaurant for many choices of local and Pacific fresh fish. Pretty busy, the locals love it! Fun, lively atmosphere, good service. Cash only.

We were visiting the area from out of town. This was our second time eating at Sea Chest, the first was Four years ago and we had to eat at the bar, because it was so crowded. They do not take reservations and start filling up when they open. If you want a table with a really good view, get there when they open. It does get crowded. I had the marinara seafood pasta and it was excellent. It was a large portion, so I was able to have the left overs a couple nights later and it was still very tasty. My husband had the breaded calamari steak and he said it was very good and very filling. The bread they serve with the meal is also good. They give you a choice of soup or salad with dinner. The clam chowder is very good and the salad good and large. I will eat here again the next time I'm in town. They don't do take out.

Found ourselves in Cambria for one night en route to points North. Booked a sweet little romance room on Moonstone and did not want to leave that beautiful boardwalk, ocean breezes, moonlight for the more touristy downtown Cambria. Two options: the grill down the street which was highly recommended by hotel staff but not so great on Trip Advisor... or the Sea Chest, which was almost discouraged by the staff--lots of warning about the wait, etc. We opted for Sea Chest and LOVED IT. We are people who appreciate and respect people who know who they are. This place is simple, with some rules: it's about seafood (no meat on the menu, hey no problem for us). It's beer and wine (NP). It's cash only, no credit cards (also NP). No reservations (NP for us). We waited until 7:30pm Friday night to walk down there and were kind of looking forward to playing rummy for the 20 minute wait. We were seated within 5 minutes, yay... near the kitchen, which was open and great fun to observe. The man who seemed like an owner (perhaps) was amazing to watch! It was almost like ballet and cooking rolled into one ... and every dish looked great. The room was busy, happy, lit for a nice evening... and our waitress was terrific (with the nicest smile on the planet). We started with water, bread, a local beer and a nice Riesling. Then came steamers, which were fabulous! Tons of great clams and a wonderful broth. Included salads came next and were quite good. We were almost full at this point! Lauren had Cioppino that was very flavorful and fresh with tons of great fish. Laura had the scampi and scallops over linguini. .. beautiful garlicky shellfish. Super fresh and yummy. We ate both the next day for lunch, they were that plentiful. Skipped dessert, walked back in the moonlight and felt just fine about the total, with tip, about $100. Thank you, TA, for the tip on timing and the encouragement to try Sea Chest. We'll be back!

The Sea Chest is conveniently located on Moonstone drive. Very quaint exterior and the interior has a welcoming and warm appeal. We were unable to get a seat with a view to the Pacific and were seated in a room to the back. We were not disappointed, it is a very charming room. Our waitress was terrific and the other wait staff were very attentive. Our food selections were fine, nothing spectacular but perfectly acceptable. My salad with the recommended balsamic and blue cheese dressing was very nice. My husband had cioppino and I had the scallops over pasta. We both felt our dishes lacked some punch. The prices a not prohibitive, but high enough that I would have expected a more sophisticated presentation. That being said, I would return in a heartbeat and order the salad, a shrimp cocktail and a fabulous bottle of wine to compliment the terrific atmosphere.
