“Relaxing Break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 20, 2013

When the weather gets really hot in central California, you can expect it to be 30 - 40 degrees cooler in Cambria. We spent a relaxing - away from the heat break - at the Cambria
Shores Lodge. It reminds me of a hunting lodge or a very large B&B with wonderful ambiance. Be careful driving in, we almost hit a deer and her fawn crossing the street.

We upgraded to a suite and had a marvelous view of the trees with the Spanish Moss gently draped from the branches. It was wonderful to pull on a hoodie and light the fireplace. The suite was spacious and for an older property very well-maintained. (It's personal, but to me the brown carpet made the rooms look less clean than they actually were.)

We arrived a bit before check-in and the person behind the desk had a bit of an attitude when I asked about checking in 1/2 hour early. Not allowing for anyone to check in early, made a horrendous crowd in the lobby at 3:00 and no cookies. They might want to look at amending this policy.

Other than this small glitch, the staff, especially those in the restaurant were very friendly and professional. The food, while not exceptional, was good. The vegetables served with dinner, we were told were from the garden that was on site. They literally melted in your mouth! The breakfast buffet had a nice selection of hot items.

The grounds and gardens are gorgeous and well worth walking through. The holly hocks were over 8 feet tall and the colors were a happy blend of green and the various flowers in bloom, such a contrast from the dryness of some of the areas we passed through driving over.

The Cambria Shores is a beautiful and friendly pet friendly motel, but acts more like a B & B. This place is right across the street from the ocean and a nice beach walkway. The owners have really outdone themselves with their amenities and snacks. They serve cookies upon arriving at 3 pm, they serve vegetables, cheese and crackers at 5pm, and fresh homemade brownies at 6pm. At 8 am they bring a basket to hang outside your door with pastries, yogurt, fruit, juice and coffee. I would have prefered it earlier since I am an early riser but of course it is suppose to be relaxing and slow. The pastries are prepackaged and they would do better to have a local bakery make them for them, but the sentiment is there. Many of the rooms have ocean views and they have plenty of chairs to sit on to watch the sunset over the ocean, if you get cold they offer blankets for your comfort while sitting across from the ocean. The town is across the highway and most things dont open until 7 or 8, but well worth the wait. I recommend Linn's bakery over the French Bakery, or the Sows Ear for dinner. The town has a dog park at the end of the road through town past the pizza place on the right, it makes it easy of you need to have the pooches stretch their legs and thay have to have some place to go potty besides a wood walkway. The hotel does have a small patch of grass set up for pooches potty breaks but my dogs need a little more space, thats why I took them to the dog park in town. The rooms are very clean and room 15 has a fireplace and you may need it in June or July since it has a nice cool ocean breeze. The shower head is like a rain shower very nice touch, but the tub wall is high I dont recommend it for older seniors, ask for a disabled room it may be better for seniors.

Room Tip: I recommend room 15 haas a king bed, it is across from the ocean but 23 has a patio, and is next to...

I can honestly say that this inn is by far the most hospitable I've ever stayed in! The hotel is older, but there has been a recent remodel that puts this place over the top! Beautiful rooms with a fireplace. Bathrooms have amazing rock floors and tile throughout. Now, on to the views! From the back patio, there's an awesome view of the ocean and Moonstone Beach. We stayed 2 nights and the price was comparable to 1 night at some of the other hotels in the area. Oh, did I mention breakfast baskets hung near your door at 8am? Incredible, thoughtful, and beautiful resort.

I chose this hotel for two reasons: Location and Pet Friendly. It was terrific on both of those points. Moonstone Beach is awesome and I just love walking along the wooden trail along the top of the cliffs, oceanside with my pups. Okay, back to the hotel. We had room 23 which is a King Patio room. It was on the small side, but, nice because of the outdoor patio. Patio had a decent view of the ocean and sunsets. As others have mentioned carpet left a bit to be desired, but, I expect that in most pet friendlies. Nice shower with one of those large rain style showerhead. The breakfast basket was very nice, although, since I'm an early riser I would have liked it before 8am. The snacks put out at various times during the day are also a nice touch. Fireplace was great.

Only reason I gave the service a 3 was because upon arrival (and throughout the 3 nights) there was a sign on the icemaker saying it was out of order. When my husband went to the desk to ask for ice they told him to go to the machine. He said, what about the sign? They said give it a try. He did, no luck. So back to the desk to please give us some ice... Anyway, not that big of a thing, but, a bit irritating. Only other thing I couldn't find was the channel guide. Spent tons of time outside so it wasn't that big of a thing, but, still. Food around Cambria is hit and miss. Lots of overpriced stuff without anything really great. Would recommend Linn's and Robin's.

Room Tip: I liked the King Patio room.

This is a wonderful location and the service is outstanding. Loved getting breakfast in a basket and being able to sit outdoors enjoying the magnificent ocean views. I also enjoyed the evening appetizers along with some delicious wine. A great value for an inexpensive price. Very close
to town.

We spent two nights here and had a great visit! You can't beat the location (directly across from Moonstone Beach). Breakfast delivered to your room was a nice touch - wasn't anything exciting but that was ok by me. Rooms appeared newly renovated with a large bathroom and lots of counter space as well as a mini fridge, microwave, and gas fireplace.
Being one of the few travelers here who had NOT brought a dog, i was a little worried that the hotel would look (or smell) "dog friendly." However, it was quite the opposite. The room was pristinely clean, wouldn't have known that dogs had been staying there.
When we're back in cambria, we will stay again!

Room Tip: I'm pretty sure that they all have at least a partial ocean view - we were in room 15 which face...

Whatever you look for in a hotel, they probably have it. Easy walk to the beach, dog friendly, great service, DVDs to borrow, clean rooms, friendly staff... they put a picnic basket with breakfast in it on a hook outside your door, and they bake fresh brownies every night. Hard to find anything here that isn't perfect.
