“Helpful staff, small hotel in ideal location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

We arrived just in time for a free aperitif for hotel guests. Everything about this hotel is geared towards making guests feel comfortable. Reception staff are outstanding. Get a room with a sea view if possible. The sea is just across the road and the hotel is in an ideal position to walk along the coast.

The Pelican Inn & Suites is a superb property that has thought of everything for a short stay on Moonstone Beach in Cambria. Their ocean view location (across Moonstone Beach Drive from the boardwalk on the bluff above the beach) is wonderful! Their service is excellent, including the food service (hot buffet breakfast and afternoon wine & cheese reception) and the guest services desk. Rooms have been updated, are very clean, well-designed, and comfortable. Beds are very comfortable and have nice linens. Shower/jetted tub combo is roomy, has a great showerhead. Good counter space in the bathroom, as well as a vanity area where they have a Keurig coffee/tea maker. Nice little balcony overlooks the parking lot, and beyond to the ocean. You can hear the waves break but you cannot see them. We highly recommend a stay here, as long as you consider the high price (paying for location and ocean view). Keep in mind this hotel is not a place for infants or young children.

Room Tip: Ask about the view from each room (ocean view, parking lot, pool, hot tub, pathways) before booking.

I have stayed at the Pelican Inn for several years. The ocean front suites are excellent. The location on Moonstone Beach is perfect. Rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. Easy to walk to the beach and walking paths along the beach. Breakfast, afternoon wine & cheese, and desert are provided daily. The staff are helpful and friendly. The only thing I found odd was check in. I understand the need for check in and check out times. When I arrived at 2:00 PM, I was told by the desk clerk that my room was not ready and would not be ready until check in time, 3:00 PM. She knew this without even checking to see if the room was ready or not. When I returned at 3:00 PM low and behold, my room was ready. The desk clerk also knew this without checking. It was almost like the room could have been ready but because check in was at 3:00 PM, they were holding to that time regardless. If you have a reservation for a specific room, which I did, why would you not clean that room first before others that may not have reservations? In spite of this, I like the hotel and its location and will continue to stay there.

We stayed at Pelican inn & suites last night. Good location, across from the beach, however the room is very dated and worn. I made reservations in August, paid in advance and we still got one of the older rooms, very disappointed for what we paid. Bathroom had cracks in the floor and only heat source was the fireplace. Breakfast was very good. Overall ok, but not worth the money.

We have been to the Pelican several times and always return, not only because of the beauty of Moonstone Beach but because of how exceptional the hotel and staff are. The breakfast is fantastic and the afternoon wine, cheese and dessert is very very nice. The hotel was taken over by another company this past year and so this trip we found the hotel to be totally remodeled. As beautiful as before just with a more modern touch. Elegant and very comfortable. The surrounding restaurants are also a treat. And you must partake in a dinner at Robin's restaurant and the Sea Chest. Outstanding! However, all of the restaurants we tried and there are many, have been delicious.

Room Tip: My husband and I stay in the Suite section of the hotel in Room 209. It is right at the top of the s...

We stayed here one night during a 15 day California vacation. We drove from Monterey down Big Sur to Cambria. Be sure to stop and visit the e-seals, what a spectacular experience. I was car sick from the winding, arm-rest gripping, yet gorgeous drive. Once we arrived at the inn, everything got better. Michael met us in the lobby. He is a charming and professional asset to the Pelican Inn. A real people-person who cares about the property and your experience there. We ended up with an ocean front king suite. It was really lovely. The living/bedroom area was newly renovated; chic and comfy. Everything, including the fireplace, fridge, and Keurig was sparkling and functioning. The bathroom, including a jacuzzi tub, was a little older, yet extremely clean and very nice. The robes were a nice touch. The hotel hosts a wine, cheese, and dessert social. The presentation and atmosphere in the dining area were so inviting. During the social hour we walked across the 2 lane not-busy road to view the sunset on the beach. Memorable. After the function ended, we went to the pool and jacuzzi. Just the right temps and very clean and relaxing. The grounds and gardens are really beautiful and well tended. The breakfast the next day was delicious with a nice selection and everything maintained at the proper temperature. I hated to leave, but the lure of Hearst Castle got us on our way, so refreshed from our stay here. It was awesome. Thanks, Michael.

We were continuing our California vacation on route to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. I looked up in Trip Advisor and found that Cambria was nearby. What a delightful find! The Pelican Inn was on a row of hotels along Moonstone Drive, which is off Highway 1. You can easily cross the road to a wooden path the goes along the beach or walk the beach itself. The sun was just beginning to set and people were coming out to view the beautiful sunset as we arrived around 6:30PM. We were warmly greeted and told we had been upgraded to an oceanfront room for no additional charge. Wine and cheese and light desserts were served in the gathering room till 7:00 so we went there before checking into our room. We met another couple and chatted with no one chasing us out till 8:00! Our room had a king size bed and fireplace with an oceanfront view. It was clean and had a quaint refurbished look. We had a refrigerator and Keurig coffee pot; it had a large refurbished bathroom too. There were a couple of restaurants within walking distance as well as restaurants in the town for dinner. The town was decorated for fall with scarecrows of every description...cartoon characters, movie stars, and even nuns! The breakfast buffet was very good and had a variety of selections, hot and cold. The inn was less than 15 minutes away from Hearst Castle. We would return to explore the town and beach area longer...our stay was for 2 nights.

Room Tip: I would request an oceanfront room with a balcony on the 2nd floor; our room had a oceanfront window...
