We stayed here one night during a 15 day California vacation. We drove from Monterey down Big Sur to Cambria. Be sure to stop and visit the e-seals, what a spectacular experience. I was car sick from the winding, arm-rest gripping, yet gorgeous drive. Once we arrived at the inn, everything got better. Michael met us in the lobby. He is a charming and professional asset to the Pelican Inn. A real people-person who cares about the property and your experience there. We ended up with an ocean front king suite. It was really lovely. The living/bedroom area was newly renovated; chic and comfy. Everything, including the fireplace, fridge, and Keurig was sparkling and functioning. The bathroom, including a jacuzzi tub, was a little older, yet extremely clean and very nice. The robes were a nice touch. The hotel hosts a wine, cheese, and dessert social. The presentation and atmosphere in the dining area were so inviting. During the social hour we walked across the 2 lane not-busy road to view the sunset on the beach. Memorable. After the function ended, we went to the pool and jacuzzi. Just the right temps and very clean and relaxing. The grounds and gardens are really beautiful and well tended. The breakfast the next day was delicious with a nice selection and everything maintained at the proper temperature. I hated to leave, but the lure of Hearst Castle got us on our way, so refreshed from our stay here. It was awesome. Thanks, Michael.

We were continuing our California vacation on route to the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. I looked up in Trip Advisor and found that Cambria was nearby. What a delightful find! The Pelican Inn was on a row of hotels along Moonstone Drive, which is off Highway 1. You can easily cross the road to a wooden path the goes along the beach or walk the beach itself. The sun was just beginning to set and people were coming out to view the beautiful sunset as we arrived around 6:30PM. We were warmly greeted and told we had been upgraded to an oceanfront room for no additional charge. Wine and cheese and light desserts were served in the gathering room till 7:00 so we went there before checking into our room. We met another couple and chatted with no one chasing us out till 8:00! Our room had a king size bed and fireplace with an oceanfront view. It was clean and had a quaint refurbished look. We had a refrigerator and Keurig coffee pot; it had a large refurbished bathroom too. There were a couple of restaurants within walking distance as well as restaurants in the town for dinner. The town was decorated for fall with scarecrows of every description...cartoon characters, movie stars, and even nuns! The breakfast buffet was very good and had a variety of selections, hot and cold. The inn was less than 15 minutes away from Hearst Castle. We would return to explore the town and beach area longer...our stay was for 2 nights.

Room Tip: I would request an oceanfront room with a balcony on the 2nd floor; our room had a oceanfront window...

Has we been staying for more than one night I would certainly have booked a beachfront room. We stayed in a Traditional King which was huge and well equipped. We had a coffee maker, fire place and a well designed bathroom which gave us separate basin/vanity areas.
We were on the side of the building which didn't afford us an Ocean view though the window seat was lovely
You are steps from a ruggedly beautiful beach with a wooden pathway for strolls and sunset watching. Its a short drive or a good walk into the main town of Cambria which has a greater choice of bars, restaurants and antique stores.
The breakfast room was buzzing with travellers keen to know each others tales and the breakfast selection was the best on our trip. We enjoyed making our own fresh waffles.
Mike on reception was welcoming and at the cheese and wine meet he told us all it was a two glass minimum - nice to have someone who is interested in having fun with his guests and making them feel relaxed and welcome
Car parking is free too
Upon checking out I thought that I could have spent another night here. Its a great place for a weekend break or a two night stop on a road trip

Room Tip: Make the most of the location and ask for a beach front room if you are staying more than one night

We booked the best grade room in this hotel (ocean view, king size bed) as a break from driving Big Sur, from SF to Santa Barbara. I wished we had carried on driving.

We booked an ocean view king room and paid over $320 for it. The room was beyond 'worn' and could not have seen any maintenance for decades. Much of the paintwork was worn through, the bath was missing mastic with it's junction to the 1970s tiles and the mirror door to the wardrobe looked like it would fall off if you touched it.

The tea making bits included tiny packets of creamer, despite them sitting on a perfectly functioning refrigerator. For $320, couldn't there have been a 50c milk carton in there?

The worst bit was, after putting all of that aside as we would only be there for one night, we then found bed had an industrial grade urine protector that felt like it belonged in a nursing home.

This room was the most expensive mid week bookings on our trip. We booked and got luxury at every other hotel, but not at the Pelican Inn.

The breakfast was acceptable and Cambria is pretty. These points aren't good enough reason to stay here and we considered the room to be worth half what we paid.

Room Tip: The good rooms are in other hotels.

My husband surprised me with a romantic 3 day get away. He chose to stay at the Pelican Inn. This was the best choice he ever made, upon our arrival the staff was extremely friendly, the room was cozy and romantic, the food was delicious!!

Especially the dessert and wines. Michael the overnight manager was extremely nice and helpful along with the whole staff from the kitchen help to housekeeping.

All the associates at the front desk were friendly and made us feel welcomed.

We will definitely return to this enchanted hotel in the near future.

We checked into this hotel after a long drive along the Pacific Coast from SF to Cambria. We were well greeted by a friendly staff, who quickly directed us to a nearby restaurant for dinner as we were quite late. Breakfast was great, the room beautiful and clean with a nice view of the ocean.

This is a lovely place to stop on your way along the Pacific Coast Highway, the rooms were comfortable and had everything you need. Breakfast was nice and they had more choice than I expected. We walked along the beach park opposite the hotel in the morning and saw seals playing in the bay really beautiful. Cambria is a cute town to explore I recommend stopping here for a night.
