“Get a suite and bring the kids!”
Reviewed June 14, 2007

The Sea Otter has been our favorite place to stay for almost 15 years now. It's just a very pleasant little inn, on an amazing stretch of California coastline. Be aware -- the prices on Moonstone Beach are high, there's no getting around it. Set your expectations accordingly.

On this trip, we brought our 9-year-old along. We stayed in a suite (#111) and were very pleased. It had 2 sofabeds in the living room, along with a microwave and a mini-fridge. The youngster made himself right at home with his own TV & VCR. Mom & Dad's room had its own bath, another TV & VCR, and a lovely little private patio.

We ate at Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill -- very good and surprisingly kid-friendly. Yes, they have a kid's menu.

We only stayed 2 nights -- wish we could afford to stay longer! LOL!

  • Liked — Plenty of room for my family of 3; lovely private patio.
  • Disliked — The price of the suite is very high.

The Sea Otter was perfectly comfortable and a nice 1 night stop on our way up the coast. However, it's not really a B & B; more like a motel. Our room had a king-sized bed, gas fireplace/heater, and windows that opened up to the street and the shore just a bit further on. (room 25, I think)
I didn't feel comfortable leaving 1st floor windows without screens open all night, but if I had, we would have easily been able to hear the waves crashing on the rocks. The room wasn't luxurious, but it was spacious, tasteful, and in a wonderful location. Just across the street is a boardwalk with amazing views and access to the beach where my husband and I sat for a while watching sea otters, gulls, and a seal out sunning itself on the rocks. It was so reasonable and easy that we definitely plan on going back.
Only real negative was the "breakfast," which was served in the tiny office and consisted of the usual pastries, not-great coffee, instant cereals, and bad orange juice.

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — breakfast and not-so-friendly day receptionist. (evening person was very nice)

We stayed here for 1 night (8 October) and paid $107 for a standard room with a king size bed.

The Inn is situated across a small road 1 minute walk from Moonstone Beach and very close by there are about 30 sea lions lounging around on the beach!

It's a one storey pink building and our room was large with a good shower, lovely linen and bedspread and was quiet and well kept. We were in 101 (or 102, I can't quite remember !) which was next to the laundry / ice-making machine so a little noisy in the day when we checked in but it wasn't a problem at night. You might, however, want to go for room 103 or 104.

3 or 4 of the hotels on the same road at Sea Otter had rooms with balconies or a communal grassy area with chairs from which to sit and watch the sunset (not sure how much these hotels cost though !). However, you can watch the sunset from the beach so it was fine really!

You collect breakfast (muffins, porridge, cereal, Danish pastries etc) at reception and take it back to your room to eat.

The Inn is a short drive across the H1 to Cambria town. Top tip : I'd highly recommend dinner at the Black Cat Bistro in Cambria (nb. closed Tues and Wed) - we had a delicious candlelit meal with outstanding service.

Every year my husband and I visit Cambria for a long weekend get-away and we always stay at the Sea Otter Inn. We love the location and the inn's employees are always very friendly and helpful. We've already got our October weekend booked and are looking forward to staying in our favorite room 101 again.

We recently stayed at the Sea Otter Inn whilst making our way from Santa Monica to San francisco as the location was halfway between the two and close to Hearst Castle. From the moment we arrived we loved it.
We had booked a suite for our family of 5 which turned out to be beautiful with a large living area with 2 (comfortable sofa beds) a seperate bedroom with a king bed, 2 bathrooms one with a whirlpool bath and a lovely private patio garden. It was very clean, spacious and well decorated and we immediately felt at home.
The location just across from moonstone beach was wonderful and we spent the evening watching seals and sea otters swimming in the sea. Cambria is close by and has a number of shops and restaurants. As we were coming to the end of a hectic 17 day holiday we immediately booked in for a further night before moving on as we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere here.

Stayed for just one night while travelling from SF to LA. I thought our hotel was lovely. The room and beds were comfortable and we enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. Although the breakfast was Continental, it was not the prepackaged muffins and snack bars - the mini croissants and pastries were yummy! The hotel grounds were lush with lots of flowers in bloom and it was just a quick walk across the street to enjoy the beach scenery. I love the area and would recommend this inn to all.

We stayed July 28th at the Sea Otter Inn. Rooms have been recently remodeled and are very nice. The Fire Place does not work in unit 117, but the room was comfortable and had wireless internet. The Breakfast is pretty bare, on a scale of 1-5... only a 1. Beach access was great, and we recommend the Inn.
