Hey we were coming to California for semester break and a gal in our Historic Folklore of America II class saw this on Trip Advisor and printed out the reviews for the class, so we decided to include it in our sunshine getaway (it's cold in Oklahoma in the winter). So after the Rose Bowl (Go Sooners!!) we headed up - great drive up coast, and Nitt Witt topped it off. This guy Art Beale (and nobody knows him like our tour guide Mike) was a historical gem himself - the things he did, in life, and in this mansion, are amazing - we (college freshmen/women) loved it, my parents, AND my grandparents loved it, but the capper is, my 2 sisters (5 and 9) loved it, and my 15 year old teenage brother (who doesn't like anything "older" people like) said it was 'phat' and 'way cool', and that he loved it, too!! - he even grinned a lot while we were there - Prof Rhinehart showed the California Gold video we brought back to the class and he's already put it on the list for academic credit tours!! - and yes, we got credit for it, this year, too. There'll be a bunch of us back either at spring break or next Rose Bowl. (Sooners will be there) maybe we'll bring the winning team up, too!!

“Nitt Witt Ridge”

Tour of Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria is worth it, if you have seen this place over the years and want to know what it's all about. Mike O'Malley gives an informative 1-hour tour of the entire property, with many details of builder's life (Art Beal). Go on a sunny day to see everything since there isn't electricity in the house. A lot of stone steps to climb. Park at the bottom of the hill, then walk up- parking is limited out front.

“What A Joy!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2002

What A Joy!!

Saw this featured on California Gold TV show a few nights before Halloween, and really got a kick out of it.

When we took the tour, it really lived up to our expectations. The young man that did our tour is Mike O'malley, the same one that gave the tour for the California Gold TV show tour, and boy, does he know his stuff!! - We found out why.

He's actually the guy that came to Cambria, like most folks do, to enjoy the area and coastline, pines, etc. , and found what was then an extremely neglected jewel of art/folklore/nostalgia. It was just being let go to ruin, so this guy got the place, put the rest of his and his family's life on hold, and they all just poured everything into totally restoring a real treasure for the rest of us - and what a great job they've done!

We found everything just swept us away. The view of the ocean, the coastline, the pines, the deer, etc.
and the place itself is so authentic.

Some of Art Beale's clothes still hang in "closets", the old "one stone at a time" built archways, the 5 arch hand built wedding chapel, the weaving pathway, also built one stone at a time, that weaves all through the five level mansion/artpiece/personal museum/artifact (so many ways to describe it, almost have to see it for yourself) - the same type of paths branch off and just take you everywhere.

We all just came away totally pleased, and we unanimously agreed that this was the most enjoyalble site we've seen for several years, way above the mutimillion dollar Hearst Castle, just 3 miles away.

Anyone that liked Hearst Castle, will just love this place - and so much to see!! - we'll be back next year, and probably every year for quite a few years to come.

Thanks for a real joy - keep up the good work - we know you will!!

“unsightly piece of garbage”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2002

I don't see how anyone could even be remotley attracted to something that disgusting. What a waste of a California Historical Landmark. You would think people could come up with something better to do than look at that sorry excuse for a house.
