The Bluebird Motel is in the main part of Cambria, and about a 15-20 minute walk from the beachfront. The latter is very pituresque and a great place for a walk. However it lacks shops and restaurants so if you're looking for a bit of life stay in the centre.

We were upgraded to a creekside room (21) when we arrived to check in. This was lovely: spacious, clean and quiet, with a terrace overlooking the creek & gardens.

We had dinner at Brambles in the evening and it was delicious. Regrettably neither my husband nor I can drink at the moment but the wine list looked great.

The Bluebird provide cake, coffee & the morning's papers at breakfast. All in all a very pleasant place to stay.

I stayed here on a Thursday night while visiting Hearst Castle. I wanted to be in town, not just in a roadside motel, and this filled the bill. Great location in the center of Cambria. No vacancy on a week night will tell you either how popular it was or how expensive the surrounding places may have been. Travelers need to know, however, that there are no in-room phones and almost no cellular service (definitely none for Cingular). Other than the above the place was a bit noisy. Didn't seem to be sound insulated at all and you could hear people on the stairs. However, it was clean, great location, well priced and an easy walk to restaurants, antique stores, etc.

Our two night visit to Cambria was delightful...mostly because it's Cambria. The Bluebird is an adequate place to stay. The beds were comfortable and the room was sparkling clean. The location is very convenient to the shops and gardens of Cambria town-proper and excellent restaurants within walking distance. We did have difficulties in the room with the bathroom door...it didn't shut without applying significant force. On the other hand, since we were only staying two nights, we didn't bother to complain about it. AND the rubber ducky in the bathtub made up for a lot. We also suggest you bring some quarters or plan to ask for some at the desk when you check in. Cambria has no cell phone coverage and the rooms at the Bluebird do not have phones. There is a pay phone outside the lobby of the motel. If you can wait to make any phone calls, your cell will work at Hearst Castle or down the coast in Cuyucos. I highly recommend the Bluebird as it is a clean, attractive and convenient bargain, even with the little quirks.

We had read reviews about the Blue Bird and thought we'd go for it--as this was an adventure. We'd never been to Cambria. Usually we stay at 5 star hotels so this was very different. We really enjoyed the stay. The bed was so comfy and we slept like a babies our entire three night stay! It's very simple but very clean and great hospitality. Fun location too because you can walk all over town. We'd totally stay there again!

Travelling from San francisco to LA, So we pick a place in the middle to stop for a couple of days. I am so pleased we picked Cambria, the Bluebird motel was fantastic value. 2 adults 3 children, we was given a family suite 2 bedrooms with 4 double beds huge rooms , rooms were very clean well looked after. the staff was very helpfull seemed like a nice family run motel, free coffee + other drinks in reception, free coffee, tea, choclate drinks cakes for breakfast.
we ate at a lovely restaurant recommended by the bluebird called the old stone station I must say 1st class food large portions.
if we had the chance we would do the whole trip again.

Agree with the other positive reviews. It is very clean. Well located. Lots of parking. Quiet. Not expensive, snooty or cloyingly cute. Stayed for 3 nights and had a nice visit. Only cautions: phone calls from rooms can be iffy (ours did not work) and cell service (Cingular) seems to not reach to Cambria.
This is 12 minute drive from Hearst Castle. Great spot!

We were on a road trip and just kind of happened across this motel, which looks like your typical cheap-o roadside motel from the outside... Au contraire!!! While the cheap-o portion would be right on the money, thanks to the low price offered by this motel, there is nothing low-standard about the rooms. Ours was just lovely, with tasteful decor, a refrigerator, TV, fireplace and huge deck overlooking a giant, lush, riverside garden! After staying at the vastly overpriced Deetjens in Big Sur, this seemed like such an awesome deal, since the area behind the hotel was reminiscent and the room was actually better. The motel is also a convenient 5-minute walk to all the town's cute shops and restaurants, which is nice so you can just leave the car in the parking lot. There is no formal sit-down breakfast, but the rooms have refrigerators and coffee makers, and the very cute motel lobby with a pretty old piano offers coffee and pastries in the morning, which is good enough (give me free coffee and donuts and I'll take it infinitely more times than Deetjens' 40-dollar eggs benedict!) ...This was definitely one of the pleasant surprises in terms of hotels on our trip around California. Thanks!
