“Wonderful Staff!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2007

After staying at Fogcatcher Inn once before, and loving it, we decided to go back. My mom was visiting from FL and the night we arrived to the inn, we found out that my grandfather was in ICU and holding on to life. My mom wanted to get back to FL ASAP, so we decided to leave right away.
I wanted to see if there was any way that we could get some sort of discount because we were not going to stay the night. When I explained my situation to the attendant at the front desk, she told me to not worry about a thing. She was very concerned and immediately dropped the charges for the nights stay.
The Fogcatcher Inn is an EXCELLENT PLACE TO STAY. Not only because of the BEAUTIFUL OVERSIZED ROOMS and GREAT LOCATION, but also because of their CARING and HOSPITABLE STAFF.
I will definitely be back to Fogcatcher Inn.

The hotel is in a great location- right across from the beach. Our room was huge- cathedral ceilings, fireplace and king bed. The internet service was bad and there is no cell service - which was very nice ;) We walked on the beach and met very nice people at every point. We got to see seals and sea otters in close proximity. Be sure to check out the elephant seals. The town is cute - we loved this store Home Arts (727 Main Street) be sure to check it out.

We had a 3 night stay at the Fogcatcher and would highly recommend it. Comparing it with the other venues along Moonstone Drive or San Simeon it is a gem.

Our 2 queen size garden view room was actually at the side of the car park with a flower bed view in between. we debated mentioning that but on balance the cathedral ceilings, and spaciousness of the room outweighed any disappointment in that regard. There are benches in the garden where you can sit and enjoy the oceanview but the upstairs ocean view room with balcony looked great.

Our room had gas fire, fridge, microwave, iron / iron board, a small but very well equipped bathroom with nice toiletries (above average sewing kit). it was a really spacious family room. lots of storage, complimentary waters on arrival.

Complimentary breakfast was very good. coffee was a bit hit & miss but the big hit was the DIY waffles which were very good and filling. There was fresh fruit, yoghurts, eggs, sausages, muffins & pastries (not the best) and toast. Something for everyone.

Staff were very friendly and very helpful. Chambermaid service was briliant. they even arranged our kids soft toys really sweetly.

There is a reasonable size and a hot tub which are both great fun. the chlorine is really really strong and i am sure it doesn't hve to be quite that strong. But the hotel provide pool towels to guests which is a great service to have.

The hotel is located across a quiet road from the ocean with a lovely boardwalk above the beach. we saw sea otters and whales and collected pretty stones from the aptly named Moonstone beach.

it's a short drive into Cambria, which has some twee tourist shops and some great antiquey (not high class) places but seems a bit downtrodden. Maybe we missed something there or it just felt like that because it was overcast throughout our stay.

we ate in the Moonstone bar and grill 2 minutes walk away, with spectacular ocean sunset views and to our irish palettes okay food. i'd say they do a good burger (not on the evening menu) but they manage to make halibut have the texture of chicken. it's v expensive for that kind of food. their crabcake starter was inedible for me and if i closed my eyes it tasted like hamburger but not in a good way. however their calimari starter is exceptional and big enough for a main course. wine is reasonable. however, it was just great to have the location, sit outside on the terrace, watch the sunset plus service is good.

Cambria is the perfect base for doing Hearst Castle and the wine region of paso robles. Too far down if you are starting the Hghyway 1 drive in san fran. we regretted not stopping off for a night at big sur. Bear in mind the name of the hotel and don't expect great weather. Even in July we got sunshine one afternoon during our 3 night stay, otherwise it was overcast with the sun splitting the stones only on our last morning. our trip to hearst castle was so foggy we couldnt see the driveway up let alone spectacular views down to the ocean.

But the Fog Catcher is a great little spot.

  • Liked — the spaciousness and the facilities in the rooms plus the pool plus the service!
  • Disliked — the over the top chlorine in the pool and our supposed garden view.

We stayed at the Fogcatcher in late June. It's perfectly located as a base to visit Hearst Castle - less than 15 mins away next morning. We had one of the less expensive rooms but it was large, gorgeous and we loved it. Nice little pool and jacuzzi sheltered by a glass wall. No restaurant but there are two within very short walking distance.

We just loved this place. It was nice and comfortable and after a six hour drive on Hwy 41 from Fresno we needed comfort. We checked in and within thirty min. were walking on the lovely boardwalk along the beach. There were tons of wild flowers and lots of flowers around the Inn's property. We went to the Moonstone Bar and Grill just three doors down from the Fog Catcher. It was pretty good food and the dining on the patio, overlooking the ocean can't be beat. The view from our rooms door was the beautiful sunset. While there we saw whales, dolphins tidepools with crabs and fish, squirrels, turkey vultures, and zebras, Yes, Zebras !. The breakfast is served in a wonderful room that will make you feel like your in a country kitchen. They offer a great variety of foods and everything was really tasty. We went to Hearst Castle, and then down into charming Cambria for lunch. We went to El Chorlito up the road in San Simeon. The food was excellent and our overall experience was really great. Our sixteen year old son had a blast.

My wife, son and I at the last minute decided to drive up the coast of California from L.A. I called in the afternoon and they were very helpful in guaranteeing us a room for the night. I was told the room was a smaller room, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that there idea of a small room is much bigger than every big chain hotel we've ever stayed at. The room had two queen beds, which was perfect for us. Very comfortable with all the necessary amenities. A great view and the perfect balance of ocean breeze and sunlight. Free breakfast and minutes from hearst castle.

stayed a few nights this June. I asked for a garden side room and reservations person suggested a double queen room. It was spacious and beautiful- cathedral ceiling, fireplace, lovely yellow wallpaper that looked like hand stenciling, two comfortable upolstered chairs with ottoman in front of the fire place. Simple and tastefully decorated room. Hotel located on beachfront- across a small street and you are on a beautiful path (boardwalk) which spans length of gorgeous beach- with several overlooks along the way and wildflowers and grasses growing along the oceanfront. You can't beat the location!
PS- I peeked in a single king size room and considerably smaller than my double queen room. I am not sure paying extra for ocean front is worth it since the room I as in was garden side but just a step away from the door was a view of the ocean. If you go for ocean view- get a room on an upper level- the lower level room that I saw had windows right at street level.
