“Great Getaway Spot!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2007

This place is really great, the prices are very decent for the area, the staff could not be better and the walk along moonstone drive will lift your spirits, and help you forget your stress! Try and get a room looking over the ocean, visit the town of Camria (both sides), take a leisurly drive down Santa Rosa Creek Road, and try the local spa. (Diva Day Spa) My wife had a facial by Christine as well as pedicure which was unbelievale. The place looks over the ocean, and the staff is top notch. (Its located by Cavalier hotel) Also, be sure to visit Soto's market, it does not get more charming. Love this hotel, lobved the area, loved the spa!

We stayed at the FogCatcher Inn for one night while enroute between the Bay Area and Los Angeles. We had one room for my two teenage sons and myself. We were offered warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies on our arrival. I had splurged on the ocean view room, and the room was spacious, but the windows were paned and pretty small, so the view was somewhat obscured. I noticed that many of the properties on Moonstone Beach Drive had similar windows, so if you want a panoramic view, I suggest asking the proprieter what the windows are like. The down comforters were warm and cozy and much appreciated. The gas fireplace was fine too. There was a storm and a power outage that night, but we were snug in our room.
Breakfast was fine before we headed up to Hearst Castle in the morning. I found the FogCatcher Inn to be a pleasant place, but next time, I may just book a Garden view room.

  • Liked — the room was spacious and clean. The extras of a nice down comforter and warm cookies
  • Disliked — ocean view was a bit obscured due to window style

The location is perfect. Directly across the road (very light traffic) is a sandy beach with plenty of places to sit & watch the sunset. Our room was quiet and we felt like the only people at the hotel -- even though the place was full over Thanksgiving weekend! One small & wonderful detail I have to mention: The shower curtain was the perfect size for the shower! So many times at a hotel, you freeze while trying to keep the curtain closed! There was plenty of everything, even coffee when housekeeping realized we went through ours quickly -- they left extra for the next day without even being asked. These are the small details that make a hotel stay above average. The fireplace in the room, the extra warm down comforter on the bed, the ever-ready wireless internet, the water that was instantly hot from the hot-water faucets, the great selection of movies & channels on the large TV...I could go on. Stay here! You will not be disappointed.

This is a very nice little hotel in Cambria. I booked it for our family of four after reading reviews on tripadvisor. We come here every year since my mother-in-law lives in Cambria, but had never stayed here before. We were looking for somewhere nice but less expensive. The rate we were quoted was a bit high at 179.00 a night, but all of the hotels were expensive and/or booked during the Thanksgiving holiday, so we went for it.

We were pleasantly surprised by the quaintness of the room. They have fireplaces in the room which serve as the heater as well, no central heating..it works well though. It's right across the street from the ocean with direct beach access which is also nice. The rooms have robes, which is nice touch, along with all the needed toiletries.

Breakfast was okay, but a little crowded during our stay. My daughter liked the make your own waffles.

Overall, it's a nice place..but the beds were a little uncomfortable, if you're used to an embassy suites or Westin...you won't like the beds. It was a little expensive if you ask me though, as most of these hotels in this area are. I may check out the Bluebird next time as I've heard it's a decent place and for 69.00 a night it may be well worth checking out. We tire of having to pay so much to visit family. However, if you're looking for a getaway you may not mind the price.

The staff was very nice and accommodating too!!!

  • Liked — I liked the location and that is was a very clean hotel!
  • Disliked — the price

What a great place to stay when you travel to Hearst Castle.

Directly across the street from the Pacific Ocean, is a lovely one mile wooden board walk, with good views of the Piedras Blancas Light House. Just a short distance to Hearst Castle if you are driving or they have packages with arranged tours. The Sea Lion preserve is a bit further on (aprox 14 miles). All of Cambria and it's many many great shops, art galleries and restaurants are nearby.

The full breakfast was served from 7-10 am. With something for every appetite. The staff is extra friendly and very helpful with many handouts directing you to tourist attractions and shops.

Upon departure I was handed a $50.00 gift card on my next stay at any Pacifica Hotel, now that was a welcomed surprise. I will be booking another stay direct from the Fogcatcher's site (where the lowest price is guaranteed) before my gift card runs out in 2.5 months.

  • Liked — It's proximity to the Pacific Ocean, and the town of Cambria, Hearst Castle. A very charming decor and room style not like most motels/hotels..
  • Disliked — Only that I could not afford to stay forever!
  • Tips/Secrets — Definitely book your reservation from the hotel's web site as they guarantee to be the lowest rate or to meet the lowest rate if you find one lower!

We Loved staying at the Fog Catcher!!

Everything about it was great.. Jenn was so nice and even had a bottle of Champaine sent to our room for our anniversity! Breakfast was fit for a king and we had room 322 with a wonderful view and deck to watch the sunsets and Otters play in the ocean!

We LOVED this place! Thank you for all the people who lead us here with the great reviews. This is RIGHT on the water with a beautiful boardwalk and stairs leading to the beach within 30 feet of the hotel parking lot. The sunsets were amazing! When we checked in we were offered an "upgrade" to a king size bed with a partial ocean view instead of the queen size/garden view, for a fee of $30 extra per night. We decided to go ahead with it and it was the BEST choice!!! May I recomment room 303 to anyone staying at the Fogcater! It had a GREAT ocean view! Its on the ground level which is why is wasnt concidered a full ocean view, but it was perfect! You could hear and see the ocean extremely well. As for everyone who complains about the breakfast...well maybe you guys should learn the saying "You get what you pay for" and remember that its FREE. I thought it was a great little starter in the morning! I had waffles and fruit and thought it was great! The staff was friendly and nice, our room was very comfortable. Loved the bedding and the fireplace! Can't wait to go back to Cambria again! LOVED every minute of it!!!

  • Liked — Locaiton and good comfy large room!
  • Disliked — Small parking lot/spaces
  • Tips/Secrets — Upgrate to a partial beach view room! Sooo worth it!
