So many hotels here and we chose by TripAdvisor and it was right on with this one . King bed, super comfy, electric fire place is sweet enough and the ocean is across the street. Ours is not a water view but you can hear the surf. Breakfast comes in a bag with a knock at the door at your chosen time - is just handed over so no intrusion- so the not gourmet breakfast seems pretty gourmet!
Cookies, little chocolates, Keurig, tea, robes,... It has aplenty.

Book an ocean view(top floor) in this charming small hotel. Great service and breakfast is included. It is delivered to your room. Binoculars are provided and you sit back and look out your window. Best time to go is the first couple of weeks in January(the whales are going down to Baja to have their babies) or April/May on their way back. The other plus of visiting in January is that a lot of their restaurants have promotions and wonderful set menus.

Room Tip: it is described in my review

My husband and I have stayed here twice and plan to visit again as much as possible. Located right (literally) across the street from the Pacific, you cannot beat the location of this little hotel. We enjoyed taking walks along the well-maintained boardwalk across the road and could even hear the waves from our room.

We've stayed in two different rooms, both of which had partial ocean views. You kind of have to strain your neck a bit to see the ocean, but that didn't bother us too much because (1) we don't stay in our room often and (2) when were in the room, we were super impressed by all the immaculate details of the room. Everything from the leather guest book, plantation shutters, Kohler fixtures, gas fireplace, and homemade cookies were greatly appreciated and make the room feel like a hotel room and more like staying in a guest room of a really nice house. Our room was incredibly clean and spacious enough for two people to stay comfortably.

Breakfast...a nice surprise! You simply fill out the form they provide for you and choose from breakfast entreés (we recommend the egg, cheese, bacon puff pastry), juices, and side items (freshly baked pastries). Hang the choices on your door and the meal is dropped off at your door the next morning...all packed and ready for a picnic. We chose to eat in our room though because it was so cozy.

Other amenities we enjoyed: fresh water and tea at check-in, super comfy beds, Keurig's in room, friendly check in service, and cleanliness of the property. Additionally, we felt the price of the stay was a great deal. I would say this place is in between a nice Marriott and the Four Seasons - in fact, it might give some higher end hotels a run for their money.

Negatives: honestly, besides the limited ocean view (but you know this when you book your room and can choose a full ocean view if you want to pay a bit more), nothing comes to mind...which is rare for me!

Cannot wait to stay again!

We loved The Blue Dolphin. We stayed in the King room with partial view on the second floor. Room 206, It was fantastic. The Keurig in the room was a bonus. We met friends who were driving up from San Diego to spend a few nights with us. Our only regret is that we didn't have The Blue Dolphin to stay in in Big Sur where we spent our anniversary. The place we stayed at was a big downgrade :(. They have a lot to learn about hospitality in Big Sur!

Room Tip: Room 204 was fantastic!

We only had a short amount of time to head down to Hearst Castle on our San Fran - Seattle drive, so headed South to Cambria. It was a beautiful drive down, and we thought Cambria was just stunning too. Unfortunately, we did not get to spend very much time here, and wish we had longer.
The Blue Dolphin Inn was comfortable, with a large room and bed, friendly staff and a great bagged breakfast that we took with us.
The only thing we found was that we wanted to have the windows open to hear the ocean and let the cool ocean breeze blow in, but that didn't allow for much privacy.
However, we'd love to go back and spend some more time in the area one day, and would definitely stay here again.

Great location, friendly staff and lots of special extras - like a DVD movie library and tasty packed picnic breakfast. Lovely little town. The boardwalk is a nice experience too. Lots of wildlife... I don't know what else to say. Trying to fill up the mandatory "200 characters". Hopefully this does it.

If you look at my prior reviews, you will find I am partial to the Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton type hotels, so when I stay in more regional hotels and Inns, I tend to be a bit harder than most. The Blue Dolphin, though, exceeded my expectations.

We stopped for one night en route from San Diego to San Francisco and, based on Tripadvisor reviews and the fact that they do not allow children, we choose the Blue Dolphin. We arrived around dusk and drove right by it. The sign is a bit hidden if you are coming from the south, so pay attention. The hotel sits across a lightly traveled road from a dramatic shoreline on a rise that allows partial views of the ocean from many of the rooms. Parking and the entrance are on the backside which allows the front to have more rooms with views.

The location of the hotel, as I said, is on a lightly traveled coastal road. The shoreline is directly on the other side of the road and there is a great, well maintained walkway that meanders along the coastline. There are a few accesses to the beach below, but the walkway stays on the cliffs above. It is a great place to spend some time and is feet from the property.

Upon entering, you are greeted with an small informal lobby and a very pleasant person at the small desk that serves as the front office. The lobby is tastefully decorated with a small electric fireplace in the corner and fresh coffee and tea at the ready.

We were checked in quickly and escorted to our room. We had a standard room, as we booked late and it was the last one available. The room was a good size and well decorated. Nothing that would blow you away, but the materials were good quality, well maintained and very, very clean. The room had a K-cup coffee maker and plenty of coffee and tea, as well as a nice size flat screen. The bathroom is well appointed and the products provided are quite nice. The room is heated by an electric fireplace which has a present temperature and, although the flames keep burning, the heat turns off leaving the room the perfect temperature.
Lastly, the bed is very comfortable and, although we were in the furthest room from the ocean, we were lulled to sleep by the surf across the road.

In the morning, your preselected breakfast is delivered to your door at the selected time. It arrives in a box, but is fresh, warm and actually pretty tasty and filling. Much better than I expected.

Overall, the room was very nice, the service was professional and polite and the overall experience far exceeded my expectations. When in Cambria, I would definitely stay at the Blue Dolphin Inn again.
