Gillian was the best hostess.....our room was cozy and so convenient to walk into Calistoga. Our breakfast was sumptious...variety was great, could not have asked for more attention to details.
We would HIGHLY recommend this perfect B&B to anyone.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back....away from the street. It was very quiet, however all of the rooms are re...

Our second delightful stay with Nick and Gillian for what is likely to become an annual tradition of spring hedonism in the cozy spa town of Calistoga. Having stayed in both their properties now --the Craftsman Inn this year and the Wine Way Inn the previous--we can heartily recommend either as a comfortable, even luxurious base camp for your forays into the surrounding wineries, mineral baths, and world-class restaurants of the Napa Valley. Gillian's breakfasts alone are 'Vaut le Voyage' as Guide Michelin would say. On all mornings you'll be met in the warm, wood-paneled breakfast room with crumbly melt-in-your mouth scones of various stripes, rich press-pot coffee or a selection of teas, homemade granolas, seasonal fruits ranged along the built-in shelves. A varying main event ranging from custardy, brioche-based french toast through flaky quiches to a mound of perfectly fluffed scrambled eggs, all accompanied by savory local bacon or sausages is served from the sideboard.

After a noble breakfast, you can of course spring forth into your day of discoveries along the Silverado Trail. But I recommend retiring back into the luxurious cocoon of your room for a short nap as the height of hedonism. All the fixtures are new, or look like it; the beds are firm and fresh and the general furnishings in keeping with the overall arts & crafts feeling of unpretentious luxury. Original wood paneling and beams glow darkly in bright, fresh walls throughout and furnishings are a harmonious blend of victorian, craftsman, and early deco styles: some repro, some original. Also--in the best British B&B tradition--there is a welcoming parlor providing a common area to muster in or linger with a mid-day cuppa or late-after noon stem of wine and conversation with your fellow travelers. Not to mention the tray with sherry and homemade biscuits (cookies) waiting in your room.

While the accommodations are of course important, the true test of a B&B is the personal hospitality and "home-from-home" feeling created by the innkeepers. Nick and Gillian provide a perfect balance of accessibility and anticipation without a hint of intrusiveness. Both are deeply knowledgeable about the area and are worth consulting even if you have already planned your campaign among the tasting rooms of the valley. They will cheerfully do their best to accommodate special needs within the limits of their resources. A personal example of this was an upgrade from an upstairs room at the Wine Way into a larger, ground-floor room (Howell) at the Craftsman when I called a week before our stay to ask about accessibility after having ruptured my Achilles tendon. (NB to ADA travelers: most B&B accommodation, and also many of the older hotels, in this area lie outside of the Title III requirements due to excessive costs of compliance within older construction.) This was deeply appreciated; doubly-so as it was offered even after I'd made it clear that the lure of Gillian's menus and our previous experience with their hospitality would have had me baby-crawling up and down stairs regardless. Hence the title of this review.

Room Tip: As with most of the B&B accommodation in town, this property sits on the main two-lane highway t...

Nothing terrible to say about The Craftsman as I enjoyed our stay there, but it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting - I can't genuinely give it the same glowing reports of the more recent reviewers, but I have nothing to warn others against. The proprietors were likeable folks and the extra touches like leaving fresh cookies and sherry in the rooms was certainly to be applauded.

Others clearly like the "homely" style of breakfast, with all guests sat around a single table, with bone china and napkins. For me that's a bit much for 9am - I'm barely ready to grunt at others at that time, let alone prepared for fine dining.

A great location, and a within 200 yards we found a fantastic restaurant (JoLE), a fun afternoon of wine tasting (Vermeil Wines) and a pub with a number of decent microbrew beers (Calistoga Inn) - those places alone added value here.

Thanks for the kind words. We are sorry you felt you could not rate your stay as excellent. It is a shame you did not communicate your desires regarding breakfast as we could have easily set up a separate table or provided a tray to take something back to your room. We would also have happily held breakfast until 10:00 if we had known that you wanted later service.
We are glad to hear you enjoyed our recommendation of Jole restaurant and that they provided some nice vegan options for your dinner as we did for your breakfast.

We loved our stay at the Craftsman B&B. Our room was lovely, the bed divine, and the jacuzzi tub was fabulous. All their decor throughout the house and in the rooms is fantastic. We appreciated all the sweet touches.... fresh cookies in a jar in our room, a decantour of sherry with cute sherry glasses, nice robes, great sheets and bedding, great bathroom... And the breakfast was to-die-for!!!! Seriously, sooooooo delicious. And the champagne mimosa an extra treat. Both the owners, Nick and Gillian, are friendly and very helpful with restaurant recommendations.

Room Tip: We were in the Diamond room, and loved it. Met another couple at breakfast who were also loving the...

I had the pleasure of staying at the Craftsman thanks to a generous boss and it was a great gift to stay there while in the area. Gillian's breakfast of fresh made granolas and scones (incredible and I am now a convert to the church of scone thanks to Gillian) just to start the day.
The personal touches are truly something. Where do you receive incredible cookies and a decanter of sherry at your bed each night? Incredible bath with hot tub I will definitely be back with my wife to enjoy again. Great conversations in the morning really leave you walking away as meeting a friend, rather than a proprietor. Great location near the town main street a short walk away. If you are looking to stay in NAPA this is an easy choice to make, you will not be unhappy !! Make sure you pick up the wonderful cookbook from Gillian so you can take a little piece of NAPA home.

We completely enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to return as soon as possible. The Inn is beautiful, clean, spacious and well maintained. Our room was so comfortable, warm and inviting we could not wait to get back to it after wine tasting and exploring downtown Calistoga. Gillian and Nick are wonderful people, experienced Inn Keepers and gracious hosts. It is as if they anticipated our every need and had prepared especially for us. We felt welcomed every second of our stay. Gillian is an excellent chef who has a published cookbook, titled Inn Food. She left us delicious homemade cookies and a soothing nightcap in our room. In the morning, she prepared us a marvelous breakfast. Everything was of the highest quality at the Craftsman Inn, simply the best. If you have the opportunity to stay there, take it, you will not regret it. Marina & Francisco. Concord Ca.

Room Tip: The Diamond is beautiful.

The reservation was initially for one person at Gillian's other B&B The Wine Way inn. That was before I decided to come along. Since we are just friends we did not want to share a bed. We got an email from Nick that we were upgraded to a room at the Craftsman B&B. Didn't know whether or not that was good or bad so because we were enroute from SFO to Calistoga we had another friend check it out for us. She assured us that we really were upgraded and would be very happy with our new surroundings. Was she right?? You betcha!

We arrived late and found a note with the keys to our room, the front door and a brief description of how to get in and lock up, etc. We opened the door to a lovely craftsman home with all wood built-ins. The living room had a decanter of wine set out which we were told to help ourselves to.

Our room was lovely. We had the Howell Room which was right off the dining room. It was much larger than the original room in the Wine Way and had a pull-out sofa that was actually comfortable. I couldn't believe it. I was willing to sleep on it but I expected to be going oh my aching back. That didn't happen at all. The mattress was pretty thick for a sofa bed and it was really firm. No problem at all. The furniture was attractive and fitting for the room. The bathroom looked like it had just been renovated. It was gorgeous. The shower was great too.

The breakfast which was served in the dining room on beautiful china was to die for. I was so impressed with Gillian's cooking that I bought a copy of her cookbook "Inn Food." You have to try the scones.

Besides the amazing morsels for breakfast, there were home baked cookies in our room each night and a decanter of wine as well. The bathroom had L'Occitane bath products, nice robes and super soft towels.

Cleaning staff did a great job and replaced our towels, and toiletries without being asked.

Gillian was extremely helpful and gave us lots of coupons and advice. I loved every minute of my time at The Craftsman and will definitely recommend it and go back as soon as I can.
