“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

Fate was on our side as my wife and I stumbled across this little gem on Main Street and experienced one of the best wine tastings of our lives. Staying at the nearby Trailside Inn, it was recommended that we try some of the tasting stores in Calistoga. We were searching left and right as we walked past the historic downtown buildings searching for the tasting stores. Finding one, we were about to enter when a group of 5 walked in front of us and entered first. Having a bad experience at a crowded tasting room the day before, my wife looks at me and says 'Lets do the one next doors'. So we walked timidly into the W.H. Smith Winery tasting room and were warmly greeted by T'Anne. T'Anne was a delight, as we discovered our common interests in families, children, and wines. The daughter of the wine maker, she shared stories of growing up at the vineyard (in the hills above Napa Valley) and raising her own family. On the counter was a family photo album with photos of her family making wine including one of a teenage T'Anne stomping grapes. Priceless! They had a good variety of wine at what I thought were reasonalbe prices considering the small lot sizes. We'd recommend the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet. Enjoy!

“Learn, taste, have fun”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We have been to Napa many times for many years so continue to look for things to add to the experience. Never been to WH Smith or had their wines before. Our loss!! We read about the Wine Sensory Experience so that was the motivator. T'Anne Butcher, daughter in the Smith family, was a Valley gem. She has a cool program that takes the voodoo out of trying to describe wines and read tasting notes. On top of knowing wines and the business, she communicates effectively and makes this alot of fun. Think you know wines? Try this! We also thoroughly enjoyed the WH Smith wines in a very comprehensive tasting which is included in the reasonable Experience price. To their credit, they don't push you to buy or join clubs.

“Very Good Wines”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We dropped into this shop on the main street thinking it was just another shop to excape the rain. Great surpres. Lots of nice little wine gadgets. But the wine sampling was a pleasant experience to say the least. I had the Cabernt Savignon. It had all the elements of a very good Cab. The lady looking after us was the daughter of wine maker and as should be expected provided expert commentary. If memory serves me, the winery only produces 200 cases a year so very difficult to find. The prices very reasonable for a limited production facility. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

“Not just another tasting!”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

The family member provided five small containers with common odors which we sniffed and were asked if we could identify the odor. We then tasted a wine from the tasting bar and to try to identify the odors in that wine. A learning experience! They offer a course the "Wine Sensory Experience"
which we didn't have time for.
