“Best coffee I could find in Calistoga”
Review of Yo El Rey Roasting

Yo El Rey Roasting

I'm sort of a coffee freak - this was the best coffee/barista I could find in the area - and I tried a couple on Lincoln - the main strip. Yo El Rey is funky, bohemian coffee shop just off of Lincoln - seems to be pretty eco-friendly, and a little more like the boutique coffee roasters you might find in SF, LA, NY. They use Tcho chocolate in their mochas - a good sign:)

We were travelling with a serious coffee snob, someone who likes to know where the beans were from and when they were roasted. We despaired of finding somewhere that would fit the bill in a town as small as Calistoga. Then we discovered Yo el Rey. And it was closed. It was 2:54 and the sign said he closed at "3-ish". That was enough to bring us back the next day. And the next and the next. Jay knows his coffee and cares about it. He only had a Guatemalan roast while we were there, which isn't my favourite, but he makes a mean cappuccino. There's only one staff person so don't expect super-fast service. It's a very laid-back space that encourages you to linger and hang out and chat with the locals. I miss it already.

Very neat little shop -- and fantastic coffee. You can see the roaster right in the middle of the shop and early in the morning the street smells like popcorn aka roasting coffee beans.

We got there just before closing time but the guy was very friendly. They had organic Peruvian on hand and it was delicious. There are 2 small tables out front and it's a perfect spot to unwind, just steps from the main drag (Lincoln) and a really unique museum, The Sharpsteen Museum, is steps away in the other direction. Get your coffee to go, walk behind the museum, cross the creek and go up into the city park and relax on the steps of the gazebo.
