“Great quality across the board”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

This was the second winery that we visited on our first trip to the Napa... we thought the setting and scenery was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. The wines were all top quality across the range, our favourite was the Agira Cabernet for $80.

The only thing that surprised us somewhat in the Napa (probably our fault for not expecting this) - most wineries seemed to charge a fee for tasting, and this one in particular was $20 per person, which we thought was pretty steep! Back in Australia, most wineries don't charge for tasting, and if they do charge they will waive it if you purchase. Hence our $80 bottle turned out to be a very expensive exercise...

“Excellent wine!”
Reviewed August 4, 2013 via mobile

We enjoyed a wine and cheese pairing and short tour. The location was pretty - sitting on the patio but the star are the wines. We loved them all and joined their club. I would suggest that if you are a Cab lover you don't miss this one.

“Great place for Cabernet lovers!”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

Have been to Von Strasser twice now and thought it would be good to share thoughts on my two experiences.

Having done both the 'Vineyard Patio' tasting and the 'Wine and Cheese Pairing' I can highly recommend that you take advantage of the pairing if you are a big fan of Cab Sauv. Also, a quick note that they do book up so I would suggest making a reservation online in advance well ahead of time.

The great part about the Wine and Cheese Pairing is that the tour is just enough; some places in Napa take you on tours that are extremely long-winded but I felt the staff at Von Strasser did just enough touring on the short walk to the cave; of course the friendly staff is always happy to answer questions. The cave itself is always a constant 55F so it is a good idea to have a sweater handy even if it is pushing triple digits in the valley. I was impressed by their cheese selection and they let us know where we could pick some up in the area.

That said, the vineyard patio tasting is also very nice; the view is great and the patio has umbrella shades for those hot, sunny, days. The staff will seat you and then pour wine and describe it for you; no need to run up to a crowded tasting bar here. Also, the staff is very friendly and if not too busy will sit and chat. It is definitely one of the more intimate wineries I have been to in Napa.

All of the above being said, it always comes down to the wine and I can say that Von Strasser is an excellent place if you are a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to their standard Cab, which is quite tasty in it's own right, they have five single-vineyard cabs in their portfolio. The reason I highly recommend the Wine and Cheese Pairing is that they will often run through all six of their Cabs (note: it isn't always possible to taste each one as they do sell out) while on the patio you may only taste one or two of the single-vineyard cabs.

Finally, the wine is great and priced very reasonably; their $80 cabs often outshine the $120+ bottles you will find elsewhere in the valley. If you are a Cab Sauv lover you owe it to yourself to stop by Von Strasser at least once, hopefully for the Wine and Cheese Pairing!

“Nice boutique winery. Pretty hilltop location.”
Reviewed June 9, 2013 via mobile

This one and reverie are next to each other so we did them both back to back.

Uncrowded. one on one service. We sat on the porch and drank good wine. The rep was not pushy at all but we didn't get a tour or learn too much.

The best parts were the location views and privacy. Wine was good.

“Outstanding wines”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

We visited late one Saturday afternoon, and were greeted by Echo, one of the friendliest winery dogs you'll ever meet (a Golden Lab, I believe). After we passed her sniff test, Andrea, our hostess, led us on a tour of the winery, including a tasting in the caves, where we performed our own sniff (and taste) tests on the big red wines that Rudy Von Strasser produces. Rudy joined us for about 15-20 minutes, but it was Thanksgiving weekend, so family duties forced him to leave us in Andrea's capable hands.

Rudy's wines are big and bold, full of flavor, well-balanced and structured. We have bought them for years, and found them to be cellar-worthy, as well as approachable now. It truly is one of our favorites from the Napa Valley.

The winery is nothing fancy--a modular building with an intimate tasting and gift-item room, a short walk to the cave, a simple table in the cave. Rudy believes in putting his money into his wines, not into the superficialities of dressing them up.
