“Nature Getaway”

Mountain Home Ranch is a great place to "get away from it all". There are miles of hiking trails through redwood forests and a secluded canyon. There are board games in the lodge and carrots are provided to feed the farm animals. My daughter particularly loved feeding the horses and the cows.

The meals feature fresh, organic ingredients, when possible, including herbs and heirloom tomatoes grown on the property. The cooks are accommodating of special diets. The desserts were amazing.

Thank you, John and Suzanne, for your warm and gracious hospitality.

The place was very rustic. For us outdoor campers, we looked at it as an upgrade from camping. But when we checked-out the beddings, it was the beginning of disgust. The pillows smelled musky odor. Then I lifted the other pillows underneath, they had hairs. I didn't expect expect bells and whistles, but our beddings were NOT CLEAN. We drove downtown and bought Lysol to disinfect the room. We covered the pillows with our jackets. We used our picnic blankets as blankets. We then pulled the curtains shut and spiders fell down on the bed (didn't bother us much because were used to outdoor bugs). We decided not to have complimentary breakfast because if their sheets weren't clean, we couldn't imagine how the dishes and silverware are washed....

We are mortified by this complaint. We never received a complaint from this guest: this review is the first we heard of a problem. We do not know when, or if, they were here, or which unit they may have occupied. Had we known, we would have made every effort to correct the problem, and used this incident to instruct the staff. We have taken over our family’s nearly 100 year old facility (established in 1913), 24 units, situated on 340 acres of wilderness. Cleanliness is a major priority for us. We have increased our cleaning staff by 70% in the last year, and have switched to all natural, biodegradable hypoallergenic cleaning products by Vaska. We conduct regular training of our cleaning staff ourselves and are assisted by our supplier who conducts monthly staff training on the best cleaning methods. Our long time guests have been appreciative of the improvements. However, with hiring additional staff, mistakes can be made. We ask you, whether visiting here or elsewhere, to please comment in person. Anonymous, after-the-fact, information is of little use to you or the property owners. All that we ask is a chance to make your stay here an enjoyable one.

Its a shame because the land was beautiful. The staff was rude. When we got to our cabin there were children running around in it. Apparently they had stayed there the night before and had moved to a different cabin. The children came back in the middle of the night to look for clothing that they thought they had left inside. Apparently, they still had keys. We used the bbq area to cook out and were treated rudely by the staff who didn't like the mell of our food. No one said hello. no one said goodbye and then they charged my bank account 50 dollars more than agreed. We didn't take them up on the complimentary home cooked breakfast when we saw that the staff that had been rude to us the night before were serving the food.

On Sunday, April 26th my husband and I had to leave for a function before 'the party' arrived, so we left them an envelope welcoming them to the Ranch and giving them keys and direction to their room. No other staff was available to work that evening so there was no staff to be rude. They looked like they had a fun time given the amount of beer bottles, etc. left in the room.
'The party' did not come in to pay in the morning per the welcome note we left them. When we tried to run their credit card, we got when the reservation was made, it was declined. After several unreturned phone calls to the party, we tried one last time to run the card and on June 22, it finally went through, and only for the amount we quoted. That is when this less that flattering review appeared. They have never said a word to us about their ‘experience’.
Very unfortunate.

My fiancé and I decided to take a weekend off from our busy lives for a romance weekend away. We had heard many great things about Mountain Home Ranch, so we thought we'd give it a try. It was wonderful!! We stayed in one of their cottages, which included a kitchenette and a wood burning stove. It was a bit rustic, but it added to the charm of the place.

The weekend was rainy, so we stayed in most of the time. Did I already say, It was amazing! There's no TV so we actually got to spend quality time together, as well as snuggling in front of a cozy fire. When we felt like getting out and about there was plenty to explore. The main lodge had the daily news paper, games, puzzles and other guest. We also bundled up and took our umbrellas for a walk in the canyon. Along the way we stopped to meet the many farm animals that make up their little petting zoo.

Breakfast was great, the scones are my very favorite and I found the recipe on their website, www.mountainhomeranch.com . For all our other meals we were able to make in our unit. We even had a candle light dinner our last night there.

We will definitely go back again! We highly recommend!

  • Liked — Cozy, great breakfast and wonderful people and animals :)
  • Disliked — Cell reception unreliable as you're partly in a canyon

To begin with they were disorganized in confirming my reservation (got the wrong dates). Nice greeting when we arrived but cabin not clean and no water. When water was turned on it was FULL of mud (not acceptable). Upper pool was dirty and trash bins FULL. We decided not to stay, asked for a refund and this was happily given. Nice people but not very professional. Cabins really need updating!

We are sorry for the bad experience, but we did everything we could to rectify the problem. The guest chose one of our rustic cabins that we describe, accurately, as "one step up from camping" and are the least expensive. These are the original cabins out in the woods subject to visits from the other creatures living there. When she called, we immediately upgraded her to a nicer unit and did not charge her for the stay. We have chosen to keep some of the old cabins, as it allows us to offer a very inexpensive alternative for the "Sierra Club" types who enjoy camping.

We stayed in one of the full kitchen cabins. Very spacious with the lower pool right outside of our door. Clean with all the amenities. It was very quiet when we were there, no other guests. Our twin boys were 4 at the time, and aside from the "rustic-ness" of the facility, it was a great trip. No phone, tv, radio, etc....just the crickets at night! The breakfast was yummy, they even made Mickey Mouse pancakes for the kids. Great for a retreat or family reunion.

  • Liked — No phones, tv or radio. BBQ set up. Breakfast. Close to Calistoga

Calistoga is not a particularly kid or pet friendly area so if you want to bring either, your options in this area are extremely limited. There was only one other accomodation that allowed pets and it had poor reviews so we tried this one.

The Mountain Home Ranch primarily serves groups- probably church groups or other small organizations. But there were a few other families staying while we were there. The location is beautiful and isolated, but only a 10 minute drive to Calistoga. It is next to the Mayacamas Ranch, an obviously more upscale lodging option.

We stayed at a cabin, the Oak. It was smallish and dated but reasonably clean and everything worked, including the heater and minifrig. The bed itself was soft, but about the same in comfort level as those in more expensive houses we have rented- I prefer firmer beds. The bathroom was small and the shower very narrow- we kept striking the knobs when turning and the water comes right down on top of you and high against the far side of the shower. There was no way to shower the kids in that thing.

This place is great for dogs and kids. The owners have a dog that wanders all over the place and played for a while with our dog. We walked our dog off leash through the trails. There are farm animals including a cow and 2 horses that our kids fed carrots that were provided. If you hike down to the creek there are these small amphibians- maybe newts.

The owners John and Suzanne were very helpful and attentive. The breakfasts were very good and satisfying- 2 hot dishes, scones, biscuits, variety of fruits, jam, bread, cereal, coffee, juice, etc. The dining room is also dated but comfortable. The whole property really could use some renovation- for example, there is a lookout area with a wooden platform where you can look across the valley but it is weathered and just barely safe.

Overall, we had a great time here and I would definitely recommend it for those with kids or dogs, or if you just want some quiet and don't need 4 star accomodations.

  • Liked — Hiking trails, pet friendly
  • Disliked — rustic accomodations need updating.
