Owner description: Perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, Sterling Vineyards offers panoramic views of Napa Valley. An aerial tram carries visitors up the hill to the winery, whose architecture was modeled after that of the Greek island of Mykonos, where Sterling founder Peter Newton once lived. The brilliant white stucco stands out dramatically against the rugged Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley. Mount Saint Helena makes a lovely distant backdrop. The winery’s towers house eight bells from London’s Church of St. Dunstan’s-in-the-East, originally founded in the 10th century. The church was destroyed by fire in 1666, rebuilt, then destroyed again during the bombing of WWII. Each time, new bells were recast from the old metal to give them superior tonal quality. The rich tolling of these ancient bells sounds down through the valley on the quarter hour. Through walkways and balconies, guests take a self-guided tour of Sterling Vineyards’ winemaking facilities. Beautiful outdoor terraces and elegant tasting rooms provide the perfect environment to enjoy exceptional wines while taking in the view. The extraordinary Mediterranean-style architecture, unique aerial tramway, stunning location, historic bells, and attention to visitors make Sterling Vineyards a top destination in Napa Valley.

“Great Winery tour”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We spent a week in the Sonoma region - we were very glad that this was the last winery we visited. If it had been the first, the rest wouldn't have compared. We paid 25.00 a ticket to go up on the gondola, and take the tour. It was so much fun, and we wandered the place. We had five different wines, each one delightful. We really loved this tour, and seeing the Caslte from the balcony was an added plus.

“Spectacular views, but wine not so much”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

The fee for tram and tasting is quite high, but the views are spectacular! The wine stations are set up nicely throughout the building. The wine, however, is subpar. Only semi-liked one. Maybe the reserve wines are better. There are tables to sit on the roof and enjoy the views. Dessert wine is the best. Nice view of the castle from here. That should be your next stop. Would give the views and atmosphere top rating, but the wine probably a two.

“Really Enjoyed Our Tour and Tastings”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

My wife and I did the tram, tour and tasting at Sterling and were very pleased we did. Part of the allure of this winery is the tram ride that takes you up to the winery. Once there we sampled 5 different wines as you take something of a self-guided tour. The plus side of that is you can take your time, learn as much or as little as you care to and enjoy the tastings as you take your tour. Since we have been on several "guided" tours, for us this was a great option.

We enjoyed the scenery from beginning to end (the tram ride up and down) and everything in between. The winery was interesting as was the history of the winery. And for the most part we enjoyed the wines being sampled for the day.

As a final plus, we were given to engraved Sterling Winery wine glasses for us to enjoy our wine when we return home.

“Great vineyard for familys”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

My family and i stopped here after driving up the beautiful Silverado trail. This is a great vineyard for familys and beginners, its a self guided tour that you can take at your own pace, and the views are fantastic as are the wine tastings, they have soft drinks for the kids, plus the cable car ride is fun.

“Beautiful scenery, peaceful oasis”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

Coming to Sterling Vineyards with no expectations, we were initially greeted with pretty pricey admission tickets that included everything from wine tasting to a tour, and of course the tram ride. Since this was last vineyard we were visiting for the day, the four of us that went negotiated with the person at the ticket window that since only 2 of us planned on sampling anyway, was there any way that we could just pay admission, not including wine, for two. He must have liked us because it was magically knocked down to $15 and when we rode the tram up to the top, we were immediately greeted with four glasses anyway. Not one to turn down some free wine, we all ended up sampling a little of everything anyway, despite our original plans. The tour was interesting, great wine, better scenery. Highly recommend it!
