An acquaintance from home recommended trying JoLe on our recent visit to Calistoga. Are we ever glad that we took the advice!
Our server, Rebecca, was outstanding. She greeted us and explained the menu options. There are several tasting menus and each can be ordered with a wine pairing. She also explained that the serving sizes from the regular menu were moderate and that the chef recommended two plates per person. We decided to go with the latter choice and were more than happy to get two plates each.
I started with the grilled octopus and it was cooked to perfection, tender and not chewy. My wife had the duck liver mousse which we both agreed was the creamiest, most delicious that we had ever had.
I had the veal sweetbreads which is a dish I enjoy but do not often see on the menu. Again, they were perfect. My wife had never tasted sweetbreads before, but after sharing my dish, she is now a fan. She ordered the venison and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. It was as delicious and tender as the best filet mignon.
The dessert menu offered many tempting choices, but we opted to go light and had the home made sorbet which was also quite good.
JoLe is a farm to table restaurant and the freshness of the ingredients was apparent in every dish that we tried. I am not sure when we will visit Calistoga again but if we do, I know where our first dinner reservation will be.
