Owner description: A number of huge redwoods in this forest point away from Mount St. Helena, which once erupted violently.

We were driving by after having gone to the fabulous Safari West animal park, and decided to stop. It was interesting to see the old petrified downed trees but it wasn't all that impressive. Just a few logs laying on the ground, pretty much. Glad I didn't drive way out of my way to see this.

The petrified trees are totally amazing. We took the self guided tour but had a chat with an enthusiastic educator on the trail who filled in some gaps. Would have been nice to have more information on the boards. Perhaps a little expensive at $20 per couple.

Trees that have been turned to rock by volcanic activity and lying submerged for millions of years unearthed while digging for cultivation. There is a gift shop where you can buy small bits of polished pieces in various shapes. The walk is very nice and the staff friendly. There is also a guided tour which is not actually required. Nice place to spend a couple of hours

I had not visited here since 1969 when I was a in 2nd grade. It's totally different as an adult and one has more knowledge of history and our earth. To see petrified redwoods in person is well worth the trip. We spend an hour or so here and well with the stop off between Kenwood and Calistoga on our way to Napa.

It has been awhile since the last time I visited so I was surprised of the price of admission. However, the grounds were well maintained and staff were friendly. Kids enjoyed running around and climbing over the petrified stumps.
