“If you're in Calipatria, you'll need a place to stay...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

I've stayed at the Calipatria Inn several times now because it's convenient and central to the south end of the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is a bizarre , almost enchanted place, especially in winter when tens of thousands of ducks, geese, shorebirds, and others come to escape the cold of northern climates. The Calipatria Inn has never failed to offer a decent room, good service, a decent breakfast, and at a somewhat reasonable price. Sometimes I feel that for what it is it should be cheaper, but you're in Calipatria, it's not like you have choices. I imagine that a lot of hunters use the inn, as well as friends and family of inmates at the local state penitentiary, so if you need to stay here in winter, call ahead. Otherwise, enjoy your stay and remember to kept the door closed in summer time to keep the flies and crickets out of the room. That's the only way to have a bug-free existence in the middle of agricultural lands when it's that hot out. If you leave your room door open, don't blame anyone else for the flies.

Beautiful is an apt description for the Calipatria Inn & Suites!! Shade trees filled with many varieties of birds complete the relaxing county-like atmosphere.
It was quiet--unlike the chain motels in a large city setting. Our suite (The Mallard) was clean and very comfortable. A lovely quiet dining room provided the setting for a wonderful dinner at a very reasonable price and each morning the continental breakfast included a variety of nice choices.
Salvation Mountain and bird watching at the Saltan Sea were very close and enjoyable.
This was our third stay here and we look forward to a return visit soon to Denny Lang's beautiful Calipatria Inn & Suites.

Room Tip: The suites are roomy and more private than other rooms.

Ideal place to stay for bird watchers. Clean and comfortable. Food a bit limited for choice but pleasant enough.

Rooms were of a generous size and a fridge was appreciated!

The only downside was the how noise from rooms/verandah above and plumbing noises from neighbouring bathrooms. However, I am a VERY light sleeper so probably no concern to others.

A nice, clean little inn with cute restaurant, well-kept grounds and a central courtyard with pool and hot tub. Located in small farming town of Calipatria, adjacent to the Salton Sea, so hunting and birding opportunities abound. And when one compares their rooms and cleanliness to any other property within 30 miles, it is clear what is the best room at the best price, as there are some very tired older beat-up properties in the nearest town of Brawley. Short drive to Glamis Dunes Recreation Area and also closest place on road to Palm Springs/Palm Desert area.

Room Tip: They also have some nice two room suites with kitchenettes for longer stays. Backside of the propert...

Great spot! Rooms exceptionally clean and comfortable. Housekeeping doing a great job. Nice to have microwave and refrigerator in room. Great continental breakfast. Staff very friendly and responsive to our needs. Steakhouse food delicious! Beautiful courtyard. Lobby remodeling and upgrades look wonderful. We have stayed here numerous times and the quality and service at this hotel is exceptional!

I had planned to spend up to a week at this Inn doing photography of the Salton Sea but my second night, last night - I found a small roach crawling on the wall at 10pm. I asked and got a fly swatter from the office, then I noticed dozens and dozens were crawling all over on the ceiling and walls outside my room door. There were lots of crickets too including 3 dried up dead ones inside the glass of a picture above the sofa.

As I swatted more roaches on the walls inside my room, more gathered outside and more were able to get inside somehow. I found more crickets in my bed. By midnight (office closed) I knew I wasn't going to be able to sleep with that many bugs and I was worried I'd give some a free ride back to San Diego too.

I packed up - left at 12:30 am and drove until 3 am. When I called this morning and cancelled the rest of my stay, they said they were "sorry" but still charged me for a full night in the Roach Motel. }}}} shudder {{{{

We chose this inn for three nights as a base for birding the Salton Sea area, just a few miles up the road, having seen it recommended in a trip report by some Canadian birders.

Compared to anything else in the area, it's very good value, nice rooms, an outdoor pool and jacuzzi (well used by us with temps of 106 and 108 on our second and third afternoons there).

Dinner is fine for the standard of the hotel (as another reviewer said, it would be three-star nearer civilization). Surroundings are flat and empty, but starry, starry nights. Breakfast is fairly basic, but it's free (only place we stayed with a complimentary breakfast in our two weeks in CA) and there's plenty of it, decent coffee too.
