“Comfortable and Great Value in Salton Sea area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights recently while exploring the southeastern Salton Sea area - picked it for price and central location. It turned out to be a great choice. It looks like a basic 2 story motel, but the property has a nice courtyard and pool in the center and clean nicely furnished rooms. A couple of reviewers commented on an odor - it's the feedlot down the road on Hiway 111, folks, not anything at the Calipatria Inn and it depends on the direction of the wind. There are few options for lodging in the area and this is a very pleasant option. The staff is uniformly cheerful and helpful. We were surprised and delighted to find a restaurant on site for dinner - Steakhouse at the Inn. There are few options for food in Calipatria. The food was very good with friendly service and decent prices (beer & wine also). The Inn also serves a very basic breakfast (cereal, apples/bananas, bagels/muffins, coffee, juice). One morning there was biscuits & gravy also. Not inspiring, but adequate and the service was cheerful.
We were more than satisfied with this motel; it seemed like a place where the owner actually cared about the guests. He was on-site; the staff was very friendly and helpful; the place was clean; everything worked in our room, etc.

Room Tip: End room on the second floor

I gave the Inn 5 stars because of the unexpected comfort and value in the rural desert area.

It is similar to rooms you get in nice lower priced motels, but the property is laid out with a courtyard and pool in the center. The reception was quick and there is plenty of parking near the rooms. Rooms are comfortable, well maintained and not cramped. The heat/ac worked perfectly.

The receptionist was quite busy with several guests arriving at about the same time, but everything was handled quickly.

The continental breakfast was on par with Comfort Inns, Hamptons, etc....perhaps a bit better than some.

We will definitely be going back.

Calipatria Inn & Suites is a basic motel. It's clean and provides the essentials. In my room, the alarm clock did not work nor did one of the few wall plugs. Although I thought about reporting this to the management, I did not, because I expect this to be the responsibility of the staff.

Location is good if you are interested in the Salton Sea area. I had dinner at the in-house restaurant two nights, and it was pretty decent. On other other hand, the complimentary breakfast was pretty bad. Someone went to the store and bought a bunch of muffins and danish in large packages.

Recommend this place if you just want a nights rest - don't expect much.

Compared to the rest of the world, this review might be 3 stars, but there are few places around the Salton Sea to stay and for the price of $113, including tax, we had a two room suite. The room was clean, comfortable, well maintained, and there was a sincere effort to make it attractive. Our two-room suite had TVs in both the front room and the bedroom, as well as AC/heating units in both rooms. There is a full kitchenette in the front room with a full size refrigerator/freezer, a microwave, a coffee maker, and a small dining table with 2 rolling chairs. The freezer must be on overdrive, because it made ice really fast! Between the front room and the bedroom was a vanity sink with a small stool, a hair dryer, and the bathroom opposite. The bedroom has a nightstand, a clock/radio, a chest of drawers, and a good sized closet with a full length mirror inside the door. There is another closet in the front room too. The bedroom had a ceiling fan, which I appreciated. The curtains are the blackout kind, and really made it dark.

The bathroom was a disappointment in this cozy room. The towels were few, small, and rough. The showerhead was broken, so it was basically in the jet position. The tub did not drain very well. The water was very hot and plenty of it, though. I thought the king bed was marshmallow soft, but my Hubby found it too soft for his bad back. It’s one of those shorty kings, so if you’re really tall be warned that your feet might stick off. For the most part you couldn’t hear the other rooms, except when the folks next to us would flush. There is a nice looking pool in the courtyard, although we didn’t swim. They have a breakfast buffet, but we got up too late for it, as they stop serving at 9:00 AM. The staff is efficient, and friendly enough.

The Steakhouse Restaurant in the main building may not look like much, but the food is excellent and the service is fast and friendly. Even if you’re not staying at the Inn, I would definitely recommend that you come here for dinner.

Your options in this area are few, and the Calipatria Inn is definitely at the top of the list. It is an excellent value for the price.

I was in Southeastern CA desert area north of El Centro on a business trip and needed an overnight accomodation. Calipatria Inn is adjacent to the Salton Sea and it's huge Sonny Bono Bird Sanctuary, as well one the largest geothermal plants in the country operated by CalEnergy. It had a cute little flowered courtyard with pool and spa, along with a really tasty steakhouse restaurant onsite, which was perfect as Calipatria itself did not have alot of places to eat. The Inn also was much cleaner, nicer and newer than any other places in the area. Great value for what I was received. Also saw that they have 2-room suites, which will be useful for the hunting trip w/buddies I have now planned.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Calipatria Inn on our way to go camping at the Salton Sea. We were not sure what to expect as the area is quite remote, the surrounding town appeared a bit run-down, and our online searches for places to stay did not turn up many options; however, the Calipatria Inn was a definitely a diamond in the rough!

The rooms were spacious and clean, and the grounds were very well-cared-for. We enjoyed a relaxing dinner at the Steakhouse, which was absolutely delicious, and spent the evening soaking in the beautifully landscaped pool and spa area in the central courtyard. The location of the Inn was convenient to the Salton Sea and other outdoor recreation spots, and we enjoyed the continental breakfast the next morning, which, while basic, was a great way to fuel up before continuing on to the Salton Sea. Best of all, the staff (and other guests) were all very welcoming, friendly, and informative.

The Calipatria Inn was definitely a bright spot in our weekend trip, and we look forward to staying there again (and enjoying another delicious steak) during future trips to the area!

Wow! We were really happy to find a clean and friendly place after a great day of birding the Salton Sea. The friendly staff, the great dinner there, and the large clean rooms made for a great stay. I would definitely come here again and recommend it to my travelling friends.
