“Fine for a Quick Stay by SFO”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

Overall, this hotel serves its purpose: an economical place to get some sleep near the airport. It is a 5-10 minute drive with no traffic (about $13 cab fare from baggage at SFO). The bed was sleep-able, the shower worked fine (though the water pressure is lacking), there was a microwave and a mini fridge in the room, free WiFi, 1PM late checkout time, breakfast included in the room rate and the area seems perfectly safe. For the price (compared to the other hotels in the vicinity), it will do the job.

That said, I would probably not opt to spend more than a quick night here. As others have mentioned, the rooms are noticably old and worn, there was mildew in my shower, and the walls are woefully thin. If you are a light sleeper like myself, you will be able to hear traffic, planes and people walking around/talking outside your room and may have some difficulty sleeping. I had room 309, which is towards the back of the hotel but no view (looks out on the opposite hallway wall) and is right behind the elevator. Perhaps if you had a water view room, the noise would not be as much of an issue. I would liken this more to a motel than a hotel in terms of look and feel.

Also, for those of you booking this hotel through sites other than the hotel (and possibly through the hotel website itself), they are not flexible with cancellation. We had some bad luck and had our flights cancelled. We called as soon as the delays started (7PM-ish) and we got the sense we may not make it, but were told that we were paying for the room whether we made it or not, despite the fact that they said they were completely full that night and may have been able to rent out the room for the evening. In the end, while my fiance did not end up getting a new flight out in time, I made it in (very, very early in the morning). They were certainly under no obligation to let us cancel since the cancellation deadline was 4PM that day, but note that they are strict with their policies in case you anticipate you may have any travel delays.

Room Tip: I think rooms closer to the water may be quieter. Rooms with any exposure to the road (ex: 309) are...

Called hotel late from SFO after getting stranded by a cancelled flt. Hotel Counter Agent at Vagabond booked me room but didn't tell me their shuttle from the airport had stopped running. Upon getting to hotel, desk rep could completely care less about her job. The room I got was filthy, bed was old/soft and the room smelled of mold. You could pass a book under the door, the draft was so bad. In the morning, even though I had the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door, housekeeping kept knocking. The "Free Breakfast" is mostly uneatable unless you like cereal. The eggs tasted like powdered and sausage was a mystery meat. Upon check out they accidentally charged me for two days, although I stayed one night. Horrible.

For just 1 night then it's Ok. For more than a night then suggest somewhere else. The rooms are motel style and they have not been updated in some time. Bathrooms are Ok but bed conformable. Free wifi worked well and shuttle every 30 minutes to SFO.

The Vagabond Inn is a serviceable alternative to more expensive alternatives near SFO for a one night stay associated with a flight. The property is basic; clean, comfortable beds and good linens, basic breakfast... get the picture? It's OK, but there's nothing memorable except the $ you'll save vs. the more recognizable chains in the same area. Rooms on the north side (and maybe the east side as well) can be noisy due to proximity to the airport and the main N/S runway. Decent restaurant choices nearby for dinner, and if you want a better breakfast go to Peters Diner.

Room Tip: Avoid north side and east sides if possible due to airplane noise

We found Vagabond in Burlington near San Francisco airport to be a perfect base for day trips to San Francisco and bay area. First of all, hotel is quite close to the highway that takes you directly to the city; and, if you in no mood for driving, you could use local metro system which is nearby. If youare planning a trip to Napa and Sonoma, the easy access to the highway makes whole driving experience efficient and easy. Downtown of Burlington on Sunday morning looked very nice and lovely. Area around hotel itself is also quite nice with a trail behind hotel going along the bay. There are plenty restaurants in the area and right next to the hotel.
However, if you have to stay for more than one night in this hotel, you should definitely book a bay front room with a balcony (on second or third floor). We enjoyed bay view and sunrise from our balcony, watched landing of airplanes and had some tea. Airplanes are not really noisy and they do not fly at night. The other advantage of a bay front balcony room is a feeling of space and good air circulation. Rooms facing parking lots might not have enough of ventilation because their doors and windows are side-by-side.
What greatly surprised me was a breakfast. It was not just some continental breakfast with boring cereals, yesterday breads and undrinkable blend of coffee. It was a good buffet with a choice of hot food (sausages, potatoes, scrambled eggs) and waffles and cold food (yogurts, fruits and fruit salad, freshly baked muffins). Fried sausages and potatoes and also waffles were really tasty! The waffles were accompanied by freshly chopped strawberries! Out of curiosity I glanced into the kitchen and found it very clean. Even in larger and more expensive hotels I never experienced more generous breakfast. Breakfast area is small and simple; and you might have to wait for another guest to finish baking their own waffle or pouring coffee. So, allow some extra minutes for your breakfast time. But there are plenty of tables outside; and you can take your food into your room (and eat on a balcony with a view as we did one morning).
Wi-Fi connection worked fine. Front desk was very helpful answering all our questions. Room was cleaned nicely. We had a car and did not have to use shuttle (no comments here).

Room Tip: bay side room with balcony on second or third floor

The hotel has an excellent shuttle service to and from the airport. We used the freephone from the airport to contact the hotel and were told when to expect the shuttle and what to look for. Didn't have to wait very long.
On arrival at the hotel we were met with a very friendly young lady who pointed out the free supply of tea, coffee, fruit etc. We were given a timetable for the shuttle service and we were told they would print out boarding passes if we wanted them to do so. All good service.
The room was a little disappointing. We had paid a little extra for the bay view and were initially a little disappointed that we didn't get one with the little balcony as we had seen in the photographs. However it proved to be too cold to sit out anyway, so we just enjoyed the views from the huge windows. Worth paying the little extra for.
The room itself was large with a comfortable bed and everything was very clean. It really was in need of some re-decoration. It would not take very much to make the room very attractive. Another disappointment was not having a safe in the room.
Certainly the Vagabond has a prime site for a hotel - much closer to the Bay than most of the bigger chain hotels and considerably less expensive.
Also very convenient is having a number of places nearby to eat. We ate right next door and had a very enjoyable meal.
Breakfast was adequate. Being able to eat outside on a nice morning was a plus.
Enjoyed a lovely walk along the front before our shuttle bus arrived exactly on time.
Would stay here again. It is not luxury but the rates reflect this.

Needed a cheap 1 night stay near the airport. Vagabond Inn Executive met our needs by providing a bed. The room was not spectacular and the check in / front desk lacked the service I've come to expect at large, major chains. But like I said, it fit the bill. If you're expecting anything more than that you're in the wrong place.

I will say however their DirectTV / Dish network tv was pretty good. Yes, we were watching on an old tube tv but we had pretty much any channel imaginable.
