“本物 (authentic)!”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

After a very disappointing visit to a neighboring "Japanese" restaurant I finally located this gem. The Japanese staff is serious and efficient. Nearly every cut of fish was perfect, the taste satisfactory and presentation authentic.

This is not a bargain restaurant and is best appreciated by those who have a preference for delicious and traditional sushi. There is a surprisingly wide selection of fresh fish, as well as Japanese beer and quality sake. There is a sushi counter for those dining solo or as a couple. Even on a Monday night, when I visited, it was crowded. This is probably the best sushi restaurant for miles around.

I lived in Japan for a total of 18 years and still visit frequently. I would have no hesitation about taking the most hard to please Japanese friend here.

“Second-best sushi I've had outside of Japan”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

This restaurant feels very Japanese. It's easily accessible in downtown Burlingame, with on-street parking in front. I had a sushi platter with an interesting variety and top quality fish that melts in your mouth. The cuts were also generous - more like sashimi. They also have a nice selection of sake, so I was able to get the very dry kind I like.
I've seen other reviews that say this restaurant is pricey. If you consider the quality and the size of the portions, and you don't get carried away ordering a la carte for hours on end, I think this a fair value for the money.

“High Quality Sushi”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

I had to plan a last minute business dinner with some sushi "experts". Sakae was so good. The freshness and quality is some of the best I've had....and don't go without trying the garlic edamme. Everyone walked away from the table saying how good it was. Service was also excellent. I will be back for sure next time i'm in the area!!!!

“Yummy for both adults and children”
Reviewed April 5, 2013

Had dinner (made reservations) for 4 (2 adults and 2 children ages 4,6). the service was great with appropriate child-friendly utensils. Small and quaint restaurant (easy to walk-by and miss it!) The adults enjoyed the fresh sushi, sashimi salad and sake steamed clams/mushrooms. The children enjoyed their miso soup/rice with chilean sea bass and shrimp tempura. The prices are quite high but if you want quality food, it's worth it. Our waitress had a slightly heavy Japanese accent which was a bit difficult to understand but the 3 other staff members spoke English without any difficulties. Would return and recommend to others.

“Best Sushi on the peninsula - on par with SF's Ozumo”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

If you REALLY want the real thing and you are willing to pay for it - this is the place. No gimmicks. No "shushi nazis". No two day old fish. Just heavenly fresh sushi, sashimi, etc. They seem to have two tier fish and prices - California (fresh and expensive) and Japan (flown in, fresh, and super-expensive). Uni from Santa Barbara was great and fresh and $8. Uni from Tokyo was fresh, AMAZING, and $18. You get the idea. In our order there simply was not sub-par fish of any sort. Top notch - all the way. Service is "denny's" type friendly - which is unusual for top sushi places. Atmosphere is elegant, understated and a perfect match for the food. I have nothing negative to say about the whole experience. Even the price, while high, was worth it.
