We were less than impressed with this hotel this trip.
1. We were on the 3rd floor. I have a disability and can not walk stairs. As long as there is an elevator, I am ok.... however - 30 minutes after we checked in, the elevator went out. I was stuck on the 3rd floor with a stroller. The front desk employee said there's nothing wrong with the elevator and that there must be some kids playing a prank and that's why it's not working. My husband walked all 3 levels and checked the elevator. It was stuck in the open position on the first floor. No kids playing pranks. It was broken. We asked to be moved to a lower level room. The front desk employee said she would see if she could move us and leave us a message on our room phone later that night. We were there for 4 nights and never got a message or were moved. Yes, the elevator was eventually fixed, but this caused me a great deal of discomfort on my vacation.
#2 - Also on our first night, while in bed watching tv, we saw 2 cockroaches run across the floor. Talk about disgusting. We wore our shoes in the hotel room the rest of the vacation.
#3 - the free breakfast is free for a reason..... it is horrible. throwing a loaf a bread on the counter near a toaster along with a bowl of soft tangelos and some packaged danish. The butter for the toast, milk and OJ were in a mini fridge under the counter. No sign telling you it was there...... If I didn't go snooping, I wouldn't have found it.
#4 - Carpets in room are NASTY - my 3 year old had just gotten out of the shower and ran into the room to get dressed....... he jumped onto the bed and as I was dressing him I noticed his feet were black. He had only walked from the vanity area to the opposite side of the bed. We made sure we had socks and/or shoes on the rest of the stay. When wearing socks, the bottoms of them were black. Nasty nasty carpets.

The only positive about this stay was the bed was actually fairly comfortable.

I was very disappointed in this hotel this time around. We have stayed here at least 3-4 times in the last few years.

Dear Codysmom411,
First and for most, we would like to apologize for not meeting your expectations and being unable to go above and beyond to satisfy you on your recent stay at our Buena Park Hotel. In regards to the elevator, upon further investigation we came to find out that a guest had accidentally turned on the emergency switch. It is very unfortunate that our staff was not able to remedy the issue for you on a timely manner. We greatly value you as our repeat guest and hope that you will provide us with another opportunity to be able to serve you in the future.
Thank You,
Guest Relations Coordinator

Portola was a good choice for me, since I was looking for a clean, decent place to stay near the Disney and Knott's parks without paying too much just for being in this area (due to the parks). I don't really care much about the on-site amenities, just needed a clean and safe place to sleep and relax after a day's adventures.

The staff was pleasant and helpful the few times I interacted with them, and the housekeeping was fine.

This property is just a few blocks north of Knott's Berry Farm, and a couple of easy miles (non-freeway) to Disney. Beach Blvd. is a main N/S road that offers easy access to Orange County all the way south to Huntington Beach, and, of course, the freeways are close by. I-5 is just to the east of the hotel.
In general, this is a good central location for those wanting to go into L.A. proper, but also wanting to go to the southern beaches.

Pros:
Good value for the money, especially in this location. Other properties I considered were more expensive for this level of "clean & safe," or were less expensive, but looked and reviewed as questionable or worse.

Easy access and central location.

Lots of good restaurants nearby, plus a Target store and other necessities.

Cons:
Ceilings are a bit thin. One night was disturbed by lots of walking, bumping, and other activities upstairs of me. Plus a few late-night door slams, but that can happen anywhere.

I would definitely return to Portola for another trip to this area.

Our family was traveling in Cali so we only stayed here one night. I wish it would have been longer. This hotel was very nice. We stayed in the family suite. All three beds were clean, bathrooms were great. The man at the front desk(im sorry i forgot his name) was great. We were planning a day at Knotts and wanted to drop off our luggage before we went but we arrived before check in time. He worked it out that we could check in early and unpack to start our day of fun.. Thank you by the way. The pool is a bit small but it would do the job on a hot day. We did not stay long enough to enjoy the pool or hot tub to review them. Knotts is about a 15-20 minute walk, but it saves you parking if everyones healthy enough, your gonna walk all day there anyway right? Overall a good hotel, friendly front office, and clean.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We drove to and from Disneyland with no troubles and only took about 10 min. The staff were very accommodating and very personable. Especially Dharmesh and Stephanie. They went above and beyond to ensure my son and I had a great stay! Our room was great and clean. And the price is great for a single mom on budget. I would recommend this hotel.

Handwritten signs-No Visitors Allowed - TACKY & Ridiculous!! Threadbarren, old , dirty, cheap and hole filled blanket, dusty & dirty, no internet reception, tv channels blurry & no one to fix it, breakfast is a gallon jug of Costco orange juice, a bag of bread & toaster, and some pastries. This should be on an hourly basis - no business travelers for any amount of stay. Any amount is too much for this place. I had to change hotels.

Room Tip: Run the other way!

The bright sunny exterior of this family-owned inn reflects all the warmth that Damesh, Nirali, and their young son as well as their maids shower on their guests. This is my third stay here and I look forward to the next. Yes, there is often some little thing that needs tweaking in these rooms, just like in my own house, but then again, if you seek perfection, you will never be happy anywhere--at any price. There is no complaint that the staff will not happily try to fix. It is close to Knott's, shopping, many restaurant's (Sizzler, Paul's Place for great Mexican a few blocks west), and of course, the beaches. Best bargain around.
