If you are looking for a dude ranch, you can't do better than Hunewill Guest Ranch. It is in the Eastern Sierras (6 miles outside of Bridgeport, California), just east of the north end of Yosemite Park.
The ranch has been in the Hunewill family since the 1860's. The family still owns and operates a working cattle ranch as well as a guest operation.
The physical setting is beautiful. The ranch nestles at the foot of the Sierras in a large valley filled with cattle. Two main streams water the area. You can spend your days riding through the fields (and, at times, helping move cattle).. If you don't want to ride, the area is an outdoor paradise -- wonderful hiking trails, great fishing, and plenty of relaxing. Bodie (a ghost town) and Mono Lake are nearby, as are two natural hot springs.
The ranch is family friendly. Kids love it. Adults do too. Many of the guests return the same week year after year. (We have been going for nearly twenty years.)
The Hunewill family is warm, friendly, helpful and just plain fun. The ranch is one of the great secrets of California.
