We decided to try The Lazy Dog Cafe in Brea on New Years Eve. It was really crowded, but we sat on the patio with the heaters, and it was fine. It was nice out there. My husband said the chicken tortilla soup was the best he'd had anywhere! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was pretty good. The brownie dessert was awesome! The service was great! Very friendly place!

Best chicken tortilla soup I have ever eaten! There is such a wide variety of entrees everyone has to find something they like. Everytime I get a favorite I try something new and then that is my favorite! Right now it is the Tex-Mex salad. Great place for large groups. Last week I was in a party of 23 and the food and service was excellent and they even gave separate checks to make it easier for everyone! Our group has decided to make it a monthly event!

Because then we could hang out on the glorious patio together--where they serve water and kibble (for puppies) and the best Caesar salad with chicken, fabulous burgers, great fries, enough beer varieties for all tastes, and FREE flatbread for first timers. Thin, parmesan, garlicky--a delightful start to any meal. There's lots of room at the bar if you are there alone for a weekday lunch, and even though parking is horrible (they do offer valet) it's worth the walk. Can't wait for warmer weather and sitting around the firepit in the evening, relaxing with drinks and appetizers. This is a new favorite.

On Wednesday 28 November a party of five of us went to the opening evening of the Lazy Dog cafe in Brea. We arrived before the cafe was actually open, but the thoughtful staff, seeing two of our party had disabilities, said we could wait in the lobby until we could be seated. They even opened the main large doors so that one of our party could more easily get into the building. The staff were thoughtful and kind and saw us to our table a few moments before the restaurant was officially open.

We might have been one of their more challenging tables of the evening, and we asked a few questions which the wait staff were not sure about, but they quickly answered our queries and were charming throughout, though we did take quite a bit of time deciding on our order. They were always attentive and eager to ensure we had a pleasurable dinner with them. One question we had was about the Australian limes which one of our party had read about in the newspaper. The waitress went to find out why it was not on the menu.

We ordered two appetizers to share: the wok fried calamari and the Hawaiian ahi poke; the latter dish being one that the waitress recommended. We loved both the appetizers. We had almost finished them when the chef came out to greet us and talk to us. He came out with one of the limes which we had asked about earlier. These are chilli shaped and the chef explained that when cut in two you can squeeze out the flesh in beads, almost like caviar. They burst in your mouth and add flavor and texture to whatever you are eating. The chef was very friendly and joked with us, as a Londoner was going to order fish and chips and a Belgian was about to sample the Belgian beer. We were about to put the menu to the test!

So to the mains: one fish and chips, one lamb shank with mashed potatoes and spinach, one Bahama chicken, one Mediterranean mahi mahi and I chose the Mediterranean pizzetti (I am not a big eater), but I did want a salad to go with it. I asked whether one could be added to my meal; the waitress said 'no', but she could add one to my husband's meal for a small additional charge. So that was all good.

We had absolutely no complaints about any of our dishes and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Three of us had a glass of Pinot Grigio, one had cranberry juice, and the beer lover had two Belgian beers. With a total bottom line price of $30 a head, including a 15% tip, we will certainly return to this, or another of the Lazy Dog cafes.
