“A must see”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Getting there was a bit like driving Hwy 1 along the shore without the views, winding roads! But this is a must see if in the SFO area. Not too far a drive and the park is worth it.

“Winding road, amazing trees, this is a must see”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

Getting there was a bit winding, not sure if Google took us the best way, but we thoroughly enjoyed the jaunt there. Once in the park, you must get out and have a look at the short 3/4 mile trail. It was all we had time for. Redwoods were amazing, so neat that this little area is tucked so close yet so far away from such a big city.
I'm very impressed with the facilities at the California State Parks, nice restroom facilities, much better than what Colorado has to offer in it's restrooms.

Great spot for casual hikers (small trails) to experienced trekkers (Skyline to Sea). Love the visitor center!

“Awesome Hiking and Camping”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Big Basin has several things going for it:
1. Accessible. It is right on highway 236, about 20 minutes from Boulder Creek and less than 1 hour from Santa Cruz.
2. Scale. The trails continue all the way down to the ocean and all the way up to the crest of Santa Cruz mountains. This also gives you hiking options: short or long, waterfall or views, ravines or mountain tops.
3. There are also several overnight options: either camping, or renting a cabin, for a rustic night in the outdoors.

“Grab a convertible - great drive to and through this park!”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

difficult to rate this enormous park of huge redwoods anything but the best. If you like to take great drives - then take highway 9 out of Los Gatos, turn left through downtown Saratoga, and then pick up 236 into the park. Once you're in the park it's narrow roads meant for cruising slowly and enjoying the beauty of the park. We only briefly checked out the facilities at the center of the park - a small cafe, gift shop, restrooms, etc. (bring hand sanitizer - no soap in public restrooms). Park ranger was nice - even if only driving through, pay the $10 fee and get maps and entrance to all other state parks that day. (others have reviewed camping, etc.) Keep going south on 236, pick back up 9, go through cool little villages on way into Santa Cruz.
