My husband and I had a delightful day with Johnny. He was friendly, interesting, and passionate about sharing his knowledge of the strange and beautiful environment that is Anza Borrego. I highly recommend this experience.

Hiking, Jeep adventuring, fossil locating, star gazing, camping ... we did it all with Joe and his staff from California Overland Jeep Tours at their spectacular base in Clark Homestead. Our group of Dads and kids have had many camping adventure over the years, but our weekend with Joe was one of the most memorable. Highlights included two nights camping, great evening meals, off road adventures to Font's Point, the Borrego Badlands, Split Mountain, The Squeeze, Red Cliffs, Elephant Knees, the Wind Caves, Split Canyon and the Ancient Shelf Reef. We also really enjoyed our first night Scorpion hunt, star gazing with Scott Baker on the second night and, yes, the kids can't stop talking about the creative toilet arrangement. Anza Borrego State Park is a natural wonder that you have to explore (tip: best time is the Fall before it gets too cold or Spring when the wild flowers are in bloom - summer temps reach into the 110+ territory, so avoid this time of year).

Thanks to Joe for guiding us round in his army truck/bus! It was perfectly aimed at our group - moderate walking and a teeny bit of clambering around rocks involved. can't say too much as wouldn't want to spoil it, but be in touch with them on email they'll let you know what you want to know and are very accommodating. A real highlight. Worth every penny, maybe the overnight trips would be amazing!

Joe was an excellent and knowledgeable guide on our recent day tour to Split Mountain and the Wind Caves. Anza-Borrego is starkly beautiful. Thanks, Joe!

We discovered Joe and his desert tours in December 2012, spent two fascinating days with him - and vowed to return!
In December 2013 we were back, eager to see more of the staggeringly beautiful desert landscape. Last year Joe had patiently shown us the vast dry Clark Lake, the amazing views of the Borrego Badlands from Font's Point, driven us through Slot Canyon, led us up to the Wind Caves and the site of ancient fossilised paw prints. This year's adventures were just as riveting: a scramble up to a palm and sycamore oasis in Sheep Canyon, a stroll to the seasonal Native American encampment site and a hike to the puzzling pictographs in Blair Valley. Over the two days we gazed over huge breath-taking vistas, ate picnic lunches in stunning settings and all the time enjoyed Joe's hugely knowledgeable commentaries. We are British visitors, used to a much tamer landscape on a much smaller scale - we are immensely privileged to have been able to visit this spectacular region and to have had Joe as our guide.
By booking an Overland Desert Excursion you get a thrill-filled learning experience that you'll never forget. Strap in and try it...
