We had a great day with Joe in April, visited the Wind Caves, Hawk Canyon, drove through the badlands and finished at Fonts point. Joe has a broad general knowledge of the local geology and plants and animals, learned many interesting things. He is also a very personable guy, fun to spend time with, we were also impressed by his obvious concern for this area, as illustrated by his collecting and cleaning up of other peoples left behind garbage then packing it out on the hike out of the Wind Caves.Recommend this excursion for anybody wanting to see some amazing sites and learn some more info about this fascinating area.

We can't thank Joe enough! We flew out to CA for spring break. We contacted Joe through email, in the winter and he returned a call that day! We made tentative arrangements for an overnight experience in April, if others contacted him. Sure enough things worked out and we joined 3 other families for a tour and overnight experience. My boys ages 16 and 12 as well as my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. We got a close up experience in the Badlands, including climbing a short distance to caves, we learned about the geography of the area as well as plant life. We also learned some of the history of the park. We were in awe of the overlook at Font's Point. We drove across and walked on a dry lake bed where my boys found casings from WW2 target training practice with machine guns! Of course we left them behind for others to enjoy the park but we took photos. That evening, while the adults enjoyed some wine and cheese, my boys and the other kids explored further while our dinner was being cooked. Dinner was delicious and everyone socialized and relaxed. As darkness set in we gathered around a fire for s'mores and stories. Our tents were set up for us prior to our arrival and they were protected from the wind. We slept comfortably, my husband and I in one tent and the boys in another. We did not see any snakes or scorpions which was just fine with me. We did try to get a peek at the Milky Way but Mother Nature did not have this in mind as it was cloudy....may be next time! In the morning we were treated to a warm and yummy breakfast. We did not have to take the tents down or even roll up our sleeping bags! My family called it camping in luxury. Overall a great time was had by all. We found our experience relaxing and interesting. We even enjoyed the ride there with the changes in scenery/landscape, especially after 2 hectic days running around Disney Land. Everything was well thought out from the smallest details including our bathroom set up which was private, well lighted and had all the necessities. This was the first time I had camped in a very long time and the first time camping with my boys. We highly reccomend this trip and we look forward to another adventure on our next visit to CA!

We had a wonderful "4-hr Font's Point North Route" tour with Joe. The three kids (8, 10, 12) enjoyed the whole experience, all of the sights, the hikes and walks, the vehicle, and lunch. As the other reviews have mentioned, the vehicle had a canopy so it was breezy and comfortable even though it was ~85F, Joe had plenty of ice cold water, and there was no rush so it went a bit more than the 4hr time. Hope to be back for an overnight camp.

After hearing rave reviews of California Overland from my husband and a friend who had made previous trips off-road with Joe, our family decided to spend a day exploring remote areas of Anza Borregop with him. Three adults and two teenage boys with a variety of interests, and we all had a spectacular time! Joe's knowledge of and respect for the area made for an informative and very exciting ride. Highly recommend this business!

Anzo Borrego has some absolutely amazing things to see, and many of them are only accessible to off-road vehicles. My husband and I decided that we did not want to risk joining the ranks of those tourists who have become lost in this vast desert park in 32 C temperatures, and opted for an off-road tour with the experts, California Overland. We were not disappointed! It was nearing the end of "the season", quite hot, with decreasing demand for group tours. We talked to the owner, Joe, before we left Canada, and again after we arrived in Borrego Springs, and he was very accommodating in terms of arranging a trip for us at the last minute. Earl took us out in the jeep on a private tour for an entire afternoon. Lunch (tasty and nutritious) was included, as well as gallons of water. I am often car-sick, but had no problems in the jeep; these guys really know how to drive in washes and sand roads. Safety is also paramount. Earl made sure that we drank water regularly, and that I was secured in the vehicle. We went first to Split Mountain, viewed the wind-caves and Elephant Knees, and saw the cliff made entirely of fossilized shells. The scenery was absolutely spectacular. Earl is clearly very passionate about the Anzo Borrego desert, and was a veritable mine of amazing information about it. We then took a series of washes over the desert plain and through the badlands, which was amazing. There was no way we could ever have travelled these routes for ourselves - Earl seemed to know them like the back of his hand. We ended up to Font's Point at the end of the day, with a spectacular overlook down on the whole badlands area. The whole trip was very flexible, and Earl was very focussed on meeting our needs and ensuring that we had a good time, which we did. This company also supports the state park, which is in dire need of funds, by donating 10% of the proceeds of their trips to the park. They are committed to responsible enjoyment of the natural beauty within the park, and provide educational and highly informative tours. Overall, this was the trip of lifetime, and we would not have missed it for the world. Thanks Earl, we greatly enjoyed your enthusiasm and your company!
