“Was pleasantly suprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2011

Wow...after reading the other reviews..im suprised...We had a great time...We where looking for somewhere close for a quick get away place....and we found it...the hotel is old it was build in the 1950's ..but very clean .... its not a not a big end corporation hotel...kinda of like a family owned place....the pool was not heated but it was in the 90's when we where there so the water was perfect...the hot tub and pool was nice but old...nothing wrong with old... The food was great..We ate lunch by the pool.....Dinner that night...and breakfast the next morning...the food was excellent, all if it was wonderful....Its the the "Marroit" but if your looking for a nice quiet get away....this is the place...we will diffently be going back there soon...

We had a very disappointing experience, sadly as we'd been hoping to try this quaint mid-century modern architectural gem. Broken toilet, dimly light, noisy bar frig, tub filled up when showering, pool not heated and spa in terrible shape, no shade by the pool, chaise lounges in very sad condition. The Costco giant shampoo bottle in the shower was odd....and having to request a clock radio or hairdryer made it seem like hicksville. More upsetting was the staff unable to adjust the bill at check out and the management did not respond as promised. We had to push for a credit.

No one at the desk to receive us, so we had to search for someone to check us in. An odd way to welcome guests. The bed, albeit comfortable, was falling apart, as was the table on which sat the TV. Both of these things were reported to the management, but neither was fixed during our stay. No TV remote in the room, so we asked downstairs and were told that it would indeed there. Well, it wasn't, but a new one was brought the following day. The pool is pretty, but unheated. During two warm days there not a single person went in. The spa is heated only two hours every late afternoon. This should be a great place, but it is unpolished in the extreme and seems to be oddly managed.

Absolutely the worst hotel we have ever endured. The inn itself is a tarnished gem – a 1950s style desert resort with a classic oversized pool; but the facility is understaffed, undermaintained, and grotesquely overpriced. Paint is peeling from walls, the finish on the pool tile and Jacuzzi surfaces are fractured and worn, weeds grow in the “landscaping”, the front desk is generally unoccupied, ice is available only from a small plastic picnic cooler in the lobby, and everything is dirty. The rooms have no phones, the jacuzzi is allowed to operate for three hours a day only, and the proprietors openly boast that a meal at the hotel restaurant will take up to one hour to prepare. All of this might not be so bad, but for the fact that the staff who “greet” you are surly and rude, with a disrespectful “take-it-or-leave-it” attitude. We have never been treated so poorly. All this for ridiculously high prices, compared to what you receive in return. There are very few decent places to stay in Borrego Springs -- and this place is definitely not one of them.

The Cabana room #11 had a fantastic view of the olympic size pool that was frigid-not heated but the outdoor spa was perfect as it was medium warm and we liked it. The bathroom floor was dirty as I dropped a towel and it had a dirty print under it. The Cabana room was very nicely and simply decorated with a howling coyote in the wall recessed shelf in two areas and the bed was very comfortable. It is very cute and the room was very large for a cabana in Borrego Springs. The hotel brought wonderful cookies every afternoon and was a nice touch. Maybe it was a fluke that the room was so smoky smelling but I think someone should have deodorized the room before turning it to us at check in time.
I would have rated it a 4 or 5 but the room smelled so smoky even with the windows left open all night. The second night wasn't so bad but all of our clothing reeked of smoke and when we returned home we had to wash all of our clothing. I am sure the bedding needs to be washed due to the smoke. My husband didn't complain to the staff as no staff was around after 4 pm and we checked in by 3 pm and went to the bar to get drinks so we didn't notice until after dinner and stayed in the room that we noticed it was still distinctly smelled of fireplace smoke like a bad bonfire smell.
Also some people were very noisy at the outdoor jacuzzi until close to 11 pm laughing too loud and talking too loud as the spa is close to the two cabanas that are the best rooms at the Palms.
Also at check out my husband was charged for a lunch we never ate and he said he didn't eat lunch there as we were at the desert all day Sunday but the manager took it off perhaps bad bookkeeping as the restaurant mixed our room #11 with the other cabana #12 on the charges.
There are some unsightly old remnants of the hotel from the old days that were also interesting but I think the decaying rooms of the old section should be removed and it would be costly to do so but I believe would make this place more expensive as the maintenance would be too much for renovation now unless some investors pumped in a lot of money into making this place another step up
Overall we liked the rustic feel of the place and it definitely is remote and a quiet place overall with the above exception of the loud people at the spa. I thought there was a sign that read that the spa is open 5:30 to 8:30 pm except by appt for other hours. I would limit the time to 10 pm as these people were too loud and past the normal time for a spa gathering.

We enjoyed the Caesar Salad and Scampi at the Krazy Coyote Restaurant and would give them a 4.5 for the quality of the food. The noise level in the dining room was very loud and the noise of the large group of 8 people interfered with the dining experience. When the group left, then it was quiet but our meal was done too by that time and it was not a quiet romantic valentine dinner experience as we did stay two days at The Palms.
We will come back and give them another chance. But get that fireplace working properly as we did not get the chance to use it due to the problems that the previous occupants had with it.
Also we lost our parking space that supposedly goes with the cabana. I think that the parking spot for the two cabanas should be designated for parking only for them if that was the intention as the website stated.
I will probably give it another chance but the three complaints I mentioned took the luster off of what could have been a very relaxing and beautiful stay there.
The second night was very quiet and we enjoyed the walk around the hotel but couldn't find the Zen Garden.

A most wonderful and peaceful setting. The rooms retain vintage 1940's art deco when they were originally built. A lot of history here that is nicely described in a binder in the room. We had one of the better rooms - mini-suite with a seperate sitting room, and loved it. The hotel personnel and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant offered a large selection to choose from and we were quite satisfied with our selections. The "doggy bag" of leftovers was adorned with flowers and plant sprigs growing on the grounds wrapped in twine - a very nice touch. The Pool and Spa area was a great place to relax and enjoy. The very large pool is heated only by the sun, but the large spa (4'deep) is kept at 98 degrees. The open location allows one to explore the Anza Borrego Desert night and day and is within hiking distance (1/2-mile) to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center and the Palm Canyon Trail. If you are an outdoor person, or just looking for a place to totally chill, we highly recommend "The Palms at Indianhead." If you are in a hurry, this is probably not the place for you. The room prices were a little higher than we are used to, but we are already planning for our next visit. The value of the location, ambience, and friendliness of the staff make it a very good value.

This may well be a very nice hotel but watch out for the fine print. I booked a couple of rooms here for my wife and parents thinking it would be a nice to hang out by the pool and get a nice meal in the restaurent for a quuick trip in August. Well, over the course of several phone calls I finally found out that the restaurent AND the bar are closed in the summer. Unfortunately by this time I had already made a booking and there is a non refundable depsosit of $30/room. Stupidly I thought that given the misunderstanding and missrepresentation of the true situation on the web site they would gladly refund my deposit - NOT SO! BEWARE!
