Great place to head to on a Saturday night for top quality burgers, great margaritas and on the night we were there a very entertaining band.

Carlee's isn't really a restaurant - it's a bar with a full kitchen. There are no windows, lighting is dim even at midday, there is a pool table and a large bar. However, one side of the room features restaurant-style booth seating, and there are lots of tables.

You might expect a place like this to have a pretty decent burger, and you'd be right. They're served up big and hot, with a variety of toppings and a huge pile of seasoned fries on the side. My personal favorite is the Carlee Burger, which features bacon, cheddar cheese, and slices of fresh avocado.

However, that's only the beginning. The extensive menu features steaks, ribs, pasta dishes and more. The steaks are tender and nicely grilled, the baby back ribs come falling off the bone in a tangy sauce, and Sunday's fried chicken special is crazy good.

The staff is friendly and helpful, although the kitchen can be a little slow at times.

Be advised (warned?) that Thursday and Staturday are karaoke nights. Borrego Springs is a tiny town, and the talent pool can be a little shallow. Of course, if you can really sing, don't be shy!

We stopped in here for a late/light lunch after hiking in the desert park. The staff are super-friendly and very obliging. We opted for large glasses of iced tea to cool off, and split a Cobb salad (the staff-person warned us that their portions were enormous). He also made us a couple of slices of garlic bread each to go with it (this was not on the menu). He split the salad into two plates for us, and it was indeed huge, but of very high quality. The greens and other ingredients were very fresh and tasty, and it was nicely prepared. They have a bar there as well, and we gathered from the locals that it is a very popular spot for drinks in the evening, or a steak dinner. For a small place (pop. 3,000), we were surprised to find that Borrego Springs' restaurants and cafes were great, with tasty, freshly prepared food. There are no chains of any sort here, everything is locally owned and operated, and both locals and visitors patronize all of the establishments.

As an Englishman, places like Carlee's blow me away. It's like travelling back in time to the 50's and the golden age of post war USA with chrome fins, neon signs, and food portions that are enough for a family of four. Carlee's is in Borrego Springs, a desert town in a league of its own and a whole different subject. It's an old 50's building with diner-style furniture, and when you first walk in, the dark, slightly worn and run-down windowless environment has you thinking in what movie did I see this place? The food is typical american restaurant with burgers, sandwiches, steaks etc. The welcome and friendly service are a delight. The nice thing is as well as being a bar it's a family place so children welcome. We went as a family of eight including two children and spent $176 which included wine and beers, ribs and steaks. Great fun and we make it a regular place to visit when in Borrego springs.
