We wanted to see some redwoods while in California. We heard about this state park at a wine tasting we were at. We drove out to the park in about an hour and a half from our hotel in Santa rosa. Beautiful drive full of vineyards and a brewery. The state park was exactly what we hoped. Very few people, and the beautiful redwood trees. It was a easy hike that could easily be done with children. We really enjoyed seeing the redwoods in a less touristy atmosphere.

Out of all the California State Parks I've been to this one has been the most relaxing and enjoyable. The campsites are a really good size and the rangers and camp hosts are super helpful and friendly. You can easily stroll through the grove at your leisure and since its all flat you won't get tired at all. The swimming hole on the Navarro river and the apple orchard just past the bridge are a must. Grab a bottle of local Anderson Valley wine from the local markets, light a campfire and enjoy!

I camped here 4 nights in June while attending the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in Boonville, just down the road.
I stayed in camp site # 30, which was large.

There are showers and restrooms nearby; showers take quarters - plan on about $2 for a quick shower and hair wash. Some times there was a line at the showers and restrooms, but it was a busy weekend with many other festival goers. Showers are more available early in the morning or mid day.

There were a few nights where other campers/campsites were a bit noisy late into the night, but I guess that is to be expected when camping (which I am new to).
I would definitely stay there again; it is a beautiful place!

A state park in Philo (Anderson Valley) California containing several redwood groves adjacent to the Navarro river. If you're limited time-wise (or aren't into hiking much), drive to the day use area, focus on Big Hendy and take the Outer Loop. If you've got more time, I encourage you to park outside the park and hike both Little Hendy and Big Hendy trails. Trails tend to be narrow, and trail markers can be a little confusing (and sparse), but it is worth the trip.

The redwoods and ferns create a chapel-like experience .... calm, quiet, restful, rejuvenating, extremely pleasant walking
