“Pretty Restaurant, Good Service, Awesome Ahi Tuna”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

This is a combination Tapas and Mexican place in Bonita, south of San Diego.

Accordion music playing in the background. Was better than that sounds.

The Ahi tuna tostada with guacamole, cream, and salsa was one of the best appetizers I have ever had. Truly memorable.

The grandma's tacos de Fideo was interesting, but not memorable. The Caesar salad was watery and pretty forgettable.

The Chile Poblano de Marisco was stuffed with crab, shrimp, and salmon and was fresh and delicious.

Gustavo was a great waiter, and Anna came over to check on me and couldn't have been nicer.

Overall a very nice meal.

“EXCELLENT and worth the drive out to Bonita... One of the best meals in SD”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

I can't rave enough about this place. Just INCREDIBLE food. I met up last month for a couples night with a few of our friends. One of my friends suggested this place. It's a bit of a drive for us as we live in North County but he said it was amazing.

It's kind of strange as you are in this strip mall type location so you're not expecting much at all. Then you walk in and it's actually a very nice restaurant. It totally does NOT match what you would be expecting when you pull into the strip mall parking lot.

The place has been around for many years and the owner owns some places in Mexico as well. The food is incredible. We ordered many different tapas when we went. We had to have ordered at least 10 different things to try. Everything was really really great!

My favorite is probably the short-rib tacos with the onions and cilantro. Incredibly delicious. The meat balls are also really well flavored. The lobster and shrimp stuffed sweet peppers was also amazing. Heck, everything was!

We liked it so much we have came back with our kids. Definitely worth the drive! They have a kids menu and even simple things like their french fries are really great! The thin style that are perfectly cooked.

Definitely come hungry to this place. Their menu is very extensive. MUCH larger than what they show on their online website. I found the prices to be very reasonable for each item but things can add up as everything is so great you feel like ordering many different items.

I wish they had a place up near our house and I think I'd come here every week. DEFINITELY get to this place and try it. Really amazing food. Some of the best I've had here in San Diego.

ALL of the staff is so very friendly. Both times we came the waiter and staff were wonderful. Highly recommended.

“Romesco Mexiterranean Bistro is an epicurean food journey of the senses in Bonita, CA”
Reviewed February 2, 2014

Taquitos Porados de Cachete is deep-fried beef cheek tacos with tender greens, cojita cheese, marinated tomato & onions, mild salsa aguada, radish, and fresh Mexican cream. This has a surprising mix of flavors from Mexico and Italy. The beef cheek tacos were full of beefy flavor and very tender. The salsa tasted more like Italian marinara with the fresh tomato and oregano flavors. Put it all together and it was a like a symphony of flavors to my palate. The cojita cheese was like a cross between fresh mozzarella and ricotta, creamy with soft texture. The pickled red onions added a slight vinegar flavor just like the pickled vegetables you would get at a taco truck. Thumbs up, way up!

Gobernadores are shrimp and mozzarella grilled tacos with habanero salsa. Think crab cakes, but made with shrimp and a more delicate texture. The mozzarella gave it a creamy flavor. The salsa enhanced the sweetness of the shrimp and was, surprisingly, not too spicy. Thumbs up, way up!

Roadside Ahi Tuna Tostada served with guacamole, fresh cream, mix tender greens, lettuce, and mild habanero. The fresh ahi was still dark pink, sashimi grade. It had a slight citrus taste with a hint of spiciness to give it a nice flavor. The flavors were perfectly blended together. Thumbs up, way up!

Orejas de Mar (De la Familia del abulón) is King Top Shell (part of the abalone family) escabeche in a mild chimichurri habanero sauce. The Top Shell was expertly prepared - very tender and clean tasting. The chimichurri along with the olive oil worked really well with the flavor of the Top Shell by bringing out the sweetness of the meat. Thumbs up, way up!

Pulpo Asado a las Brasas (Grilled octopus) was grilled to tender perfection. The citrus chili pepper sauce was just right, not too sour and not too spicy. Octopus has a delicate flavor and it has to shine through. The char from the grill added a great smoky flavor to the dish. We almost ordered a second dish of this because it was so onolicious! Thumbs up, way up!

Bone Marrow Sope served with fresh habanero & chile de arbol sauce, rustic beef glaze, and old school fried parsley. The bone was roasted to perfection making the marrow as buttery as can be. The rustic beef glaze was like the richest beef consommé simmered to a thick consistency of beefy goodness. The habanero and chile de arbol sauce was slightly spicy with a creamy flavor. Both sauces complemented the marrow perfectly to keep the palate on its toes. The presentation was beautiful! Thumbs up, way up!

Classic Tijuana's Original Caesar - make sure you ask for it to be made tableside. It's a little more but well worth it. The Caesar dressing is expertly prepared by your server right in front of you - mashing up anchovies, adding egg yolk, lemon juice, garlic, parmesan cheese, whisking it together with olive oil and ends by tossing the romaine heart leaves into the dressing. I haven't had a properly made Caesar salad in years and savored that moment in time. Thumbs up, way up!

Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib served with cabernet sauce, seasonal vegetables and Yukon gold potato puree. I'm a connoisseur of beef short ribs and have them every time I see them on a menu. This is the best one I've ever had! It was superbly tender. They serve it with a knife but you will not need it. It almost falls apart as if frightened by your fork and then just melts in your mouth like a beefy butter. The baby seasonal vegetables were perfectly sautéed and seasoned to accentuate their natural sweetness. Thumbs up, way up!

Tijuana's Border Churros are served with dulce de leche dip, vanilla ice cream, and Ibarra Mexican hot chocolate. This is a great ending to any meal. Churros were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The vanilla ice cream tasted homemade with flecks of vanilla bean. Hot chocolate was just sweet enough. Thumbs up, way up!

A friend suggested meeting there for dinner and wow, what a nice surprise! The ambience reminded me of Spain, and the food...it took me back to my childhood. Authentic Jamon Serrano, Manchego cheese, and an assortment of delicious tapas. Soon we forgot about entrees and feasted on just tapas and wine.

Not only the food was great; the service was fantastic! Our waiter was attentive and personable without being obtrusive. Overall, a great experience and a must go on our next San Diego visit.

“Fantastico - tapas & wine, mighty fine!”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Late afternoon tapas & wine - the only USA restaurant in eastern county San Diego (Bonita) of the Plascencia Group from Baja Mexico. The decor, same as their Caesar's in Tijuana, is typical dark wood, white linens, large mirrored bar, friendly & professional staff throughout. Here is professionalism personified; we were greeted immediately by the lovely assistant manager & ordered a series of cold & hot tapas, all genuinely & expertly prepared & served. There is an extensive wine list with a few Mexico-Guadalupe Valle- Baja, choices, all priced on the high end, then many CA & Italians, a few by the glass. Check out their menu online prior to making the trip & know what you fancy as the tapas are extensive, though not expensive. Dinners listed were mostly with an Italian twist. As well, the 'Original Caesar Salad' created by Mr Cardini in 1927 is available & it is delicious! We loved Romesco & recommend it highly.
