I'm surprised there are so few reviews for Doran Beach. The place is mobbed (sold out) during the weekends and it's difficult to get a campsite, as it's a favorite return spot for RV'ers, as well as fisherman and boaters. Plan ahead, reservations are a must. There are a few first-come spots, but don't count on getting one! The campsites are strategically placed, so campers have a good look at the beach or the Bodega inlet. Bodega is known for weather, so plan for fog, wind, rain and yes, sometimes it's even sunny. I wouldn't even entertain camping in a tent, as the weather is ... unpredictable. The Sonoma rangers are very nice and leave everyone alone to enjoy themselves, but they're helpful and courteous if you need assistance. Lots to do at Doran; there's a breakwater, surfing, boating, beach, marsh, Bodega inlet, hiking trails - so much to do!

My family and friends, a group of 16+ with 8 campers, went to Doran's Beach and had a blast for the Opening Day of Crabbing Season.
Make your reservations very early, sites are limited, we booked ours 1 year in advance.

This is a wonderful walking spot- A Sonoma County Regional Park. I like the safety of a not wild surf...there is no strong current...great for dog walking- leashes required

I'm sure Doran Regional Park campground is nice at SOME point of the year, but when we were there in mid-August it was miserable.

To get to Doran, we drove through Sonoma County and the weather couldn't have been more perfect. 82 degrees, zero humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We couldn't have been more excited to see the Sonoma coastline and get to our campsite on the Pacific Ocean. A few miles inland from the coast, we started seeing the fog. Soon we were enveloped in the fog, rolled down the windows and the temp had dropped 30 degrees. We arrived at our campsite (#75) to high winds, a heavy mist from the fog, and the smell of decaying shellfish. Not at all what we wanted or were expecting. Add to the fact that YOU WILL NOT SEE A THING as far as the NorCal coastline. Hell, you could barely see your hand in front of your face.

The ranger (very friendly and helpful, kudos) told us Bodega Dunes may be a bit less windy, and we could try getting a first-come site there, but we would still be on the hook for our reservation at Doran. The campsites at Bodega Dunes were larger and nicer, but we decided to tough it out at Doran and save ourselves the $30.

One of the worst camping experiences I've ever endured with the cold, the wind, and the non-stop foghorn blowing every 10 seconds (literally) all through the night.

Do not stay here.

We decided to give Doran Beach a try because we wanted to try somewhere different besides Bodega Dunes. After reviewing their website, we booked what seemed to be a nice campsite with trees and shrubs to give us privacy. We liked how their reservation system showed pictures of each site before booking.
Upon arriving it was extremely windy! It took us nearly an hour to try to set up our tent, which normally takes us 15 minutes max. Our dog who does well in cooler weather and camps often with us was hiding behind the tent as we attempted to set it up because the sand was blowing around like crazy. We decided after an hour that we all would be miserable if we stayed and decided to forefit our fee for the first night as well as the reservation fee.
We figured that we could get a refund for the second night, but the lady at the booth said no refunds. Most campgrounds would give a refund for the following night as long as you checked out by check out time. Their cancellation policy was very vague on this point.
We packed up everything and headed over to Bodega Dunes instead. Upon talking to a neighboring camper at the Dunes, we found out that during one of their previous stays at Doran Beach the fly of a tent ripped and the winds knocked over their friend's tent trailer. We figured it would be a little breezy, but not this strong of winds. Glad we changed campgrounds so our tent did not rip!
If you decide to go to Doran Beach, be prepared for very strong winds and blowing sand, and don't try to get your money back as their cancellation policy isn't very forgiving.
