“Charming and rustic”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

A charming and rustic hotel experience. Room was very basic, but the bed was comfortable, there was plenty of tv channels (not much to do in Bodega Bay late at night) and the whirlpool tub very welcome. Definitely clean, though the furniture was worn. Breakfast was good - toast, cereal, coffee, tea and cocoa. Welcoming but lacking some of the amenities you might expect. Would benefit from a little TLC and maintenance.

Room Tip: Upper level rooms would avoid noise from people walking about you. The Library had noise from above...

On our way down the coast from Oregon we stayed at the Bodega Bay Inn 1588 Eastshore Rd in Bodega Bay. A feeling of family and comming home greeted us. As one other person pointed out, there are none of the amanities you expect in the major chain hotels, however we did find the common room stocked with plenty of breakfast food. We enjoyed having our morning coffee just listening to the birds and each others company. I have been on a diet so was pleased with the kitchen arrangement and while my husband had his normal breakfast I had my "special" meal and did not feel out of place.

My wife and I were working our way down the California Pacific Coast from Mendocino on a holiday weekend. Our goal was to find one night’s lodging on the coast rather than have to drive inland to find a room. We stopped at the tourist office in Bodega Bay later in the afternoon. The tourist office staff mentioned two places in town which still may have had vacancies. The first we contacted had no vacant rooms. It was now “Any port in the storm time.” We called the Bodega Inn and had the room held until we could get there.
The driveway up the hill should have been an omen. It literally screamed, “Back the car up and leave.” There were several huge potholes on the short, steep driveway. I eased our rented car to the top and glanced around at the two buildings that comprised the inn. Both buildings needed a whole lot of repair. Scraping, painting, and washing would just be the start of necessary repairs along with a truckload full of gravel for that hill.
They had a room, the price wasn’t exorbitant, and a room in the main building looked okay so we took it. Rooms we were shown in the back building had an off smell to them. The toilet roll dispenser in our bathroom had one of its screw anchors pulled out of the wall, so the fixture looked ready to fall off the wall. The bathroom door did not quite open all the way. The door just nicked the porcelain toilet bowl as it swung open and closed. The pictures hanging on the wall were seriously out of plumb. The refrigerator in a common area was filled with clearly obvious doggie bags from former guests. An apple in a bowl had a large dark bruise. Interior, exterior no one was taking care of this place. The room was to have come with a continental breakfast. We were told “Help yourselves.” But there was virtually nothing to eat or drink.
The place did have 2 redeeming qualities. It had a nice balcony out of our room and the inn was adjacent to 2 very good food stops: the Michelin Star-Sleeper Terrapin Creek and Road House Coffee at Bodega Bay.
There may have been a day when this inn was a nice place but the grounds and buildings suffer from extreme neglect.

There were none of the amenities you would expect to find at this price. No coffee maker, microwave or refrigerator. Ice was only available in the freezer compartment of a refrigerator in the "common room", which was a joke in itself. It was nothing more than a sunporch with a few tables in it. In the morning found two household coffee makers, two cereal dispensers and no milk for either. The whole place was run down and seedy looking, as was the guy who greeted us. The great views were of the parking lot and some trees across the street, not of Bodega Bay as advertised. The much touted restaurant next door wasn't open for breakfast. This place was just slightly better than camping out.

Room Tip: Find a different hotel.

We had spent the day driving the coast and called after 7pm. The woman at the desk(Oak Ridge connection) was so friendly. We stayed in the Creek House, which was a very pleasant room. The road to the Creek House badly needs to be graded and weeding the back would make it lovely. The hospitality room was very pleasant; nice place to stay.

Ok so we've stayed in this place quite a few times. Been in almost all of the rooms. It is a nice quality bed & breakfast I must say. I will go to this place again, no doubt about it.

Here is the problem we ran into... We stayed a couple of nights over the weekend here and they had some strange guests living staying in Rm.5. For some reason, these people would come out of their room and check on us every single time we walked into the commons area for a snack! And they wouldn't just check... They'd stand and look over at how much peanut butter you were putting on your toast!

Then to top it off, they brought in their own portable cooking machines and special toasters and basically took over the whole area. Then when my wife and I tried to carry on our own conversation, they'd chime right in and start putting in their 2 cents. I think these people were "living" there on a special rate or something but they made for an uncomfortable stay. We went in the commons area a total of 5 times... all 5 times they had made an appearance. So I didn't get to enjoy that aspect of the hotel as much as I'd have liked. I felt as thought I was taking from them or something.

Besides that, had they not been there, I like the building itself. It's quiet, you can sleep good at night, soft beds!

Room Tip: All the rooms we've been to at this hotel are nice

We stayed here for 3 nights. We booked The Lighthouse (room 7) and the deciding factor was the description on their website of the patio that stated "The best part of the Lighthouse is the huge outside private patio. If you enjoy reading or just lounging with a glass of wine in the sun, this is a nice private space." When we arrived I was pretty surprised to see that it wasn't as "private" as stated. It had a large clear opening with a perfect view of the parking lot next door where anyone had a perfect view into the patio. NOT the place I would be sitting in my pajamas and enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning! Also, the TV didn't work and when my husband went and asked about it he was basically told the TV was "no good" In the morning I went and asked the man tending the front desk if we could please switch to a different room. We ended up moving to The Upper Tree (room 16), it was a very nice room and we found the deck area to be much more private. It had a large flat screen working TV and the room was very clean. I'm really glad we switched rooms, it's not something I've ever done before...usually we just deal with what we get! We will definitely come back and stay again soon. The Terrapin Creek Cafe next door is awesome! We had dinner there twice and lunch...excellent food!
