“Cancelled our confirmed reservation”
Reviewed June 19, 2007

We never got an opportunity to stay here. We received a confirmation that our trip was booked from the hotel, and two days before the trip, the hotel manager called our travel agent to say there was no room for us and offered us nothing in return. He finally offered a downgraded room at the same price - with no apology or phone call to us to explain the situation. So we're staying at the Bodega Bay Lodge which looks much nicer and is about the same price.

We booked the hotel for our anniversary getaway. I went online to check out the website, and read the reviews. After reading them, I was a little leary of going! We are in our late 40's and have traveled the world to 4 and 5 star hotels, so we think we are a bit spoiled with that. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find a really nice room (don't think spiffy like the Hilton), with a loveseat, table and chairs, desk, and king size bed. The bathroom had a 7' long counter, full size tub, and everything was very clean! Mugs for coffee, wine glasses, complimentary bottle of Chardonnay. They even have 3 live plants in the room. We had room 707, which had and L shaped window area with a nice view. I didn't find any of the things they talked about online, with needing remodeling and such. The colors are "jewel" colors, or harvest colors. The fireplace was nice, but we did have a little trouble getting the wood to light. We just put more kindling on, and eventually the logs did burn. (They even set the fire up so all you have to do is light it). The only initial drawback was when we first came in the room and noticed a smell. We mentioned it to the front desk, the maintenance man was immediately at our room, discovered the propane heater needed a gasket, and fixed it right then. No more smell.
The pool area has a huge pool, with part of it inside. The hot tub area is about 14' square, nicely heated to about 104 degrees. The grounds are beautiful, nicely landscaped and groomed. Oh! It also has a sauna, which we checked out, but didn't have time to use. We went on a Monday, and had most of the place to ourselves, with a handful of other people. It was nice. We would definitely go back again.

This place needs a complete renovation, and while they're throwing out the disgusting carpet, they might consider getting rid of the front desk staff.

We stayed here on a spur of the moment decision in February, 2007. The room location was great, as it was at the top of the hill right next to a cow pasture, where we were treated to watching the cows graze as the sun set, and again in the misty sunrise.

This ought to have made for a romantic background for two weary travelers, but the scenery was marred by just so much. The room had obviously not been decorated since the early 90s, and the worn carpet, moldy bathroom, and stale feeling put a damper on our plans for a romantic fireside room service dinner.

The bottle of wine was really sweet, but the corkscrew they left for us didn't work. Oh well. The room service meal was mostly ok, but we made the mistake of generously tipping the server with cash when a 15 percent gratuity is included. She made sure not to mention that little fact. She was unsure of herself and said it was her first night, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, but it was a shock to see the massive charge on the bill when we checked out.

Ok, on to the romantic fire. Wet wood. Wet, wet wood. The room filled with smoke, and the smell lingered through the next morning.

Both check in and check out were among the most impersonal, rude experiences I've had in 25 years of international travel.

Next time, we'll visit the cows for free on the side of the road. At least the air will smell fresher.

We didn't get a chance to find out what the Inn at the Tides was
really like because we didn't get the room we reserved, or the
service we requested. Their website has a box labelled "Guest
Requests", which we filled out with a request for a rollaway bed,
and disabled accomodations. Nothing new or different, and certainly nothing outrageous or impossible to grant. In fact, we have had no trouble in any other hotel, inn, or guest cottage with these simple requests in the past. However, upon checking in, the Innkeeper gave me a receipt for our prepaid reservation, and it did not mention either guest request. So, I inquired if they were really ready for us. I was rudely informed that "This inn does not provide rollaways, and our disabled suite is already occupied." When I asked why this was not mentioned in my emailed confirmation, I was coldly told that
"We don't DO that." He flatly refused to give us an additional room for our third person, so I requested a full refund. After a prolonged
discussion, I was given verbal notice that ..."We have not charged your card as yet, so you are free to leave." So, we did.

We found accomodation elsewhere, at a much friendlier inn, with much less hassle, and much better views, at a lesser cost, too. The Inn at the Tides will never see us in their lobby, again. I would not recommend it to anyone, in spite of the good location, and even better reputation they advertise.

If you don't have a problem with stumbling over garbage and cleaning supplies, including vaccuum cleaners, every time you enter or leave your hotel room, you wont have a problem with this place.

If you don't have a problem changing the channel with a child in the room and seeing porn on the television, you wont have a problem at this place.

If you don't mind hotel cleaning personell banging on your door at 9:30 and 10:30am after you explicitly asked the front desk to halt room cleaning until after noon, you should be ok.

The walls are thin and every single sound of every voice in every room (3) around you can be heard into the wee hours of the morning. Every banging noise the cleaning crew makes getting their supplies out of the closet that is directly outside of your door can be heard starting at 8:00 in the morning.

The service of the front desk is minimal and the concern for your comfort is non existent. What ever you do, do not eat across the street at the Tides. The food and service are terrible. The restaurant in the lobby, Bayview, is not too bad but high priced and they do not want children in there and disuade it.

My 13 year old daughter and I came here for 3 nights on the suggestion of an older couple we had met in Mendocino at the beginning of our 12 day trip to the Norther Coast and it was the most disappointing. If the staff cared about service at all it might make up for the other problems. The room was clean, for the most part, and the view from the room was nice. All in all, as service is the more important thing to me, I would not stay here again.

Where to begin...the bottle of champagne that i requested be in the room upon arrival was not there, and i was still charged full price for it....the restaurant associated with the hotel (across the street) was SO overpriced, but looked like a Denny's diner...they charged $3.50 for bread for the table...but the view was great....for breakfast the corned beef hash was straight out of a can, though i specifically asked if it wsa hommade....the pool was nice....and that might be the only positive thing i have to say about this place

  • Liked — the pool
  • Disliked — the service (i.e. restaurant server was awful...should not be waiting table anywhere, let alone some place so sophisticated)
