“Good service, cold, and somewhat dirty.”
Reviewed January 29, 2008

The Golden Bear Cottages Resort appears on its face to be a cozy throwback from an earlier time. Most pictures online portray a clean and somewhat modern interior, complete with the "Jacuzzi" tub....well it's not quite that way.

Despite the fact that the service there (as far as their response when you ask for things) was good, the level of cleanliness left something to be desired. Most of the cookery and some of the plates were filthy, greasy (we are talking baked on filth), and clearly not maintained by the cleaning services.

The "Jacuzzi" tub was sufficient for one person of sub-standard height who does not mind freezing (we went when there was snow on the ground) in the unheated room that it is located in.

This brings me to my biggest gripe, the heating. Heating was accomplished via a small heating unit attached to the front of the cabin. Sadly, this unit was only capable of keeping the main room and kitchen from freezing, but it could do nothing for the bedroom and bathroom areas (made of brick and mortar/no insulation from the outside). This resulted in my first having to build a fire in the fireplace and keep it going 24/7, then finally turning on all of the burners on the stove in desperation when the fire and heater were insufficient to keep us out of our gloves and snowboots.

As for the rest of the property, it has a nice children’s play area and barbeque facilities for a time when you will not freeze doing so.

Having said this, our stay was not too miserable, I just had to do a lot of dishes and freeze in the bathroom.

We would like to clarify some things for the general public. This guest's family was very nice, and we enjoyed having them. We are sorry for the couple of dirty cooking items. Each guest has the responsibility to clean their cooking items properly and return them as they found them before checking out. Our maids are supposed to double check for this, and they didn't on this occasion. We have reviewed this with our housekeeping supervisor, and she has gone over kitchen cleaning proceedures with each maid to keep them from missing this in the future. Thanks to this guest for the heads up. It is our mistake for not double checking the previous guest.
With regard to the cabin being cold, this was caused by the guest accidentally turning the large 185,000 BTU heater down instead of UP when they checked into their cabin. Our maintanence person had earlier turned the heat on and set the fan for the guest. But with the guest turning both heater and fan off for 4 or 5 hours late in the day, the cabin was never able to warm back up. Remember , at this time of the year the nightime temperature routinely drops into the teens. We did make a special trip after closing to their cabin and took them a space heater to help. We are so sorry for their uncomfortable night.
Each of our historic cabins have two heat sources: a sufficiently large thermoststically controlled gas heater, and a large wood burning fireplace. In the coldest winter times, both are needed to keep cabins warm. Thank you

So we were getting ready to bring in the New Year with a trip to Big Bear...like always we called to set up our stay at Golden Bear Cottages. We arrived on Jan 4'th and planned on checking out on the 6'th. The 4'th was a Friday, we got there a bit to late to ski that night so we planned on skiing the next day (Sat 5'th). We got up to rain and crummy weather, the resorts were both closed, so we had a nice day of enjoying the Village in town. About 6pm on Saturday the rain turned into snow and came down with a vegance! We wanted to get up the next day (Sunday) and go sking but with an early check out the day just did not seem like it would be long enough to get the whole experience. I went to the office and ask if we could have a later check out so we could ski the entire day. Now I am not saying that these nice people can accomidate everyone everytime but when you need something Golden Bear Cottages will be there for you if they can. We were able to check out later...we had a blast on the mountain and like always we are planning our next trip to stay with Golden Bear Cottages every chance we get! Thanks Golden Bear Cottages. This makes about 19 stays with these people, worth every second.

Very Sincerly,
World Traveled;
Michael Mitchell

Here's the deal... Golden Bear Cottages is a collection of old run down "cabins", that looks more like a low end roadside Motel. One of the reviews I read had it right, that the photos and web site are very deceiving, and do not paint a realistic picture of the place.

I just stayed 2 nights there with my 2 kids, they refer to it as "the creepy cabin", and it was one of those trips where you can laugh about it after you are home.

Not to go into too much detail, but it is what it is. If you are used to staying in run down old Motels, stuff broken, bad service if any, etc, then stay there. If you want a nice weekend getaway, then stay away from this place.

I will say that you have to remember you are going to Big Bear. Big Bear has always been a seedy run down place, I live and grew up in LA, for as long as I can remember. So if you are there for any other reason than to ski, I suggest you go to Lake Arrowhead for your weekend in the mountains, as it is a little better at every level.

We really tried to help this guest. They reserved a smaller cabin, and we moved around other guests to accommodate them. We had to search the cabin to find where they possibly took the photos they posted. One was from a closet and another from behind a bed. The bathroom tile photo was from a previous guest accident that we had to do a quick repair on to accommodate this guest in a bigger cabin. It will be properly repaired this week as we can put the cabin on maintanence.
There is an old proverb that says a unhappy person cannot be satisfied. I guess we should pay attention. We appologize we were not able to make this guest's vacation stay as nice as they expected. We can always learn something from every customer to make our service better in the future.

Big Bear is probably best known as a ski resort town, but every summer a group of friends and I drive up the mountain just to get away for a weekend. To breathe the fresh air, enjoy nature, and just plain relax. Golden Bear Cottages is the perfect place for all this (especially the "just plain relax" part.

We've stayed at Golden Bear Cottages for the last 6 years, in several different cabins. This year we stayed in Golden Bear Manor, a huge cabin that comfortably sleeps about 20 people. This cabin is perfect for a large group. It's situated so that the entire large group can hang out together (we had a 16 person sit down dinner and could have fit more). At the same time, it's large enough so that everyone can have their own space. There is a great deck, a gas grill, a huge refrigerator, and plenty of parking.

Every cabin that we've stayed at over the years has been fantastic. It's as if we're staying at a friend’s summer home. The cabins are always clean. The kitchens are full of pots and pans and whatever you might need if you want to cook for yourself. There are tons of board games and movies at the front desk. They have ping pong, a basketball court, volleyball net, a swimming pool and a hot tub.

Golden Bear would be a perfect location for a family vacation, romantic getaway (did I mention the ping pong?), or just a place to spend quality time with good friends. We only get to stay for one weekend a year, but I speak for my entire group when I say we would spend a month if we could.

We started our trips to Big Bear when our daughter was seven to celerate her birthday. We have returned every year since. She will be 13 next year and we plan on going. Location is nice, close to slopes, intertubing and sleding. Cabins are cozy and fun to stay in. We've only stayed there in the winter but plan on going up sometime in the summer or spring. Always a great time when we go. I've read some of the other reviews, the ones that are not so favorable, seems to me thet some people are just too picky!

We just moved to CA, and we didn't know where to go for a little weekend trip. To our luck I called Golden Bear Cottages and spoke with the nicest person I've ever met. She helped us even after closing with getting the prefect cottage for myself, husband and dogs. We had a great time and we can't wait to return. The price was prefect; I really couldn't ask for more. As they all say "You get want you pay for", but at Golden Bear Cottages they go above and beyond. The pool was warm at night and the hot tub was even better. On Saturday nights they play movies in the pool area, so all together the little weekend get away was prefect for us at Golden Bear Cottages.

Well, my mother rented myself, my husband, and my three children ranging in age from 17 months to 14 years for a weekend at Golden bear Cottages. We rented the Honey Pot #5 which was so adorable, rustic, and perfect for the surroundings and "feel" of Big Bear Lake. Our Hot tub was not warming up and the handy man resonded to our call in 3 minutes... yes, 3 minutes! He was very friendly and apoligized profusely. We thought it would warm up by mid next day and unfortunately it did not. Our hot water heater pilot went out too so we called the office and were offered to transfer to a larger cottage for no extra cost for the duration of our stay. We were also given a free large boat rental on the lake for our troubles, and a gift card towards our next visit! Lisa, the office lady, was the absolute best person I have ever dealt with in customer service and made us feel at home and honored to be a guest there. They have ammenities for the whole family, clean, right price, and best all around. We never wanted to leave and felt like we just belonged there. They even have a gift shop and rental place for movies onsite! The pool was perfect and big toy was a big hit with the baby. This place totally rocks over any other place at Big Bear.... none could beat Golden Bear Cottages!
