This is a great place for the kids to come and see some of the native animals that live in the area, as they have quite a few number of taxidermied birds and animals. There are also a few other exhibits to view of local items. The kids favorite part and a big highlight was the new Discovery Zone that is located out back...it's not very well advertised...so we actually stumbled upon it by chance. It has a "spider web" to climb, a small stage to play, make music and other great things for the kids to just play on... all made of natural materials. It is a great addition to the Center and I would definitely make sure you find your way to the Zone. Overall, the Discovery Center has a wealth of information about the area, especially about all the trails around the area, so I would definitely make a stop at some point.

This is a nice little intro to outdoor experiences in Big Bear. Also there is access to a couple of hikes, the lake, and there is a very nice nature trail. There are tables for picnics available. The discovery center is pet friendly. The only reason I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 is that they used to have a great gift shop that had unique gifts and items not available anywhere else that is no longer there.

I live in Big Bear and frequently took guests to the Discovery Center. The staff is excellent, well informed, the building and grounds and lake view location are wonderful. The board of trustees evidently took it upon themselves to terminate the wonderful gift shop. No warning and no input opportunities. The gift shop was full of local artists' work, educational nature books, jewelry, children's educational toys and books, and excellent gifts. Even tho many people have written letters to the board, none have received replies to questions asked...like why??? Some people say it was not profitable, but most believe that is false. I believe that is impossible. Everytime I've been there in all seasons, the cash register was ringing. But since no one cares to respond, the rumors persist and I do not bring guests there anymore. I would have given the DC a 5 star rating but the missing gift shop brings it down two stars.

The rangers were very nice and helpful with trail information, and there was a docent volunteer there explaining various things. There were hands-on experiences and a video. However, the gift shop that had been there before was apparently a non-profit and couldn't make a go of it so it was no longer there. Previously they had some nicer things that couldn't be found in the touristy shops in town. They are planning an entire new facility that looks really good. Worth a look see.

Great for adults and children alike, the discovery center offers free information for all that's around the Big Bear region. For first time visitors, it helps to visit here first, then plan a fun, adventurous and educational tour around the region! Great volunteer/ranger led walk around the center itself, very educational, and scenic!
